Nonotina 7th, Year One of the Reign of High King Ran

As a member of The Inquisitors, Eris has been summoned to The Tower of the City Guard to investigate a disturbance in an alley near the tower.
Captain Ridley: Agent Drew, I have an assignment for you.
Eris Drew: I am listening.
Captain Ridley: There is an alley just southeast of the tower where a body was found when the suns returned to the sky a couple of hours ago. I need you to canvas the area again, now that the body has been removed to look for clues.
Eris Drew: Am I to look for something specific?
Captain Ridley: You are looking for an odd weapon. Something with multiple small tines. Or, maybe signs of some kind of critter.
Eris Drew: Signs of a creature you say? Is there reason to believe that the victim was killed by some sort of beast?
Captain Ridley: Well, we do not think it was a typical city creature like a rat or a cat. The wounds on the victim do not match.
Eris Drew: I will take a look. I am to report back to you, if I am to assume correctly?
Captain Ridley: Yes.
Captain Ridley: One more thing. The victim was Silas Forgosten. He was a middleman for a couple of different fences in South Port and Nightfield. He may have been in the alley to meet someone or stash something temporarily, so look around for contraband as well.
Eris Drew: I will take a look around.
Captain Ridley: Thank you, agent.
Eris leaves the tower and heads southeast, entering the Tower Market. The alley in question leads out of the southwest corner of this market.
Eris Drew steps cautiously looking at the ground and goes to where the body was.
Lia [Quori]: [Translation] Something does not feel quite right around here.
Eris Drew looks around.
Eris Drew: I don't see anything.
Lia [Quori]: [Translation] There is something not quite right with the ground. What is that uneven pile of muck just up there on the left.
Eris Drew [Quori]: [Translation] Should I go take a look?
Lia [Quori]: [Translation] Well, of course, silly.
Eris Drew approaches the uneven pile but doesn't go right to it.
Eris notices a torn bit of blue paper sticking out of the mud.
Eris Drew takes the paper.
A tiny winged creature apparently fashioned of mud belches forth mud directed at Eris, but she manages to avoid it.
Eris Drew quickly draws her sword and wielding it with both hands swings at the creature. The sharp blade cuts into the animated mud.
The mud creature lashes out at Eris, scratching her.
Eris Drew strikes the thing again with her sword.
The creature returns the attack making a heavy gash in Eris' neck.
Eris employs her healing powers on herself to avoid being struck down.
The creature strikes Eris again, nearly besting her.
Eris Drew swings again but misses this time.
Rael Octavius steps around the corner into the alley, drawn by the sounds of combat and launches a bolt of fire at the creature, striking it solidly.
Eris Drew [Quori]: [Translation] What the hell?
This time the creature's attack goes astray, missing the paladin.
Eris Drew swings one final time, severing the thing's head from its neck and it falls to the ground and dissolves.
Rael Octavius: Are you alright?
Rael Octavius approaches.
Eris Drew: Errr...not necessarily alright.
Rael Octavius: Looks like you found a mud mephit.
Eris Drew: Whatever it was, it is dead now.
Rael Octavius: Lucky for you, I heard you. What are you doing in this alley?
Eris Drew: What is it to you?
Rael Octavius: Just curiosity and performing a bit of an investigation of my own.
Eris Drew: Are you now? Why do you assume I am investigating something?
Rael Octavius: Because there was a murder here and only law-enforcement is allowed in this alley right now. By the way, I am Rael Octavius. You may have heard of my father, Reggot. He is the King's Herald.
Eris Drew: The herald's son, oh?
Rael Octavius: I have been trying to track down a package that was stolen.
Eris Drew: A package?
Eris Drew: Could this be of use?
Eris Drew pulls out the blue paper.
Rael Octavius: That paper matches the wrappings right where the mephit was.
Rael Octavius points at the ground.
Among the wrappings is a box.
Eris Drew: Well, that is where I found it before the thing came to life, per se.
Eris Drew approaches the box.
Rael Octavius retrieves the wrappings, leaving the box behind.
Rael Octavius: The package I am looking for has purple wrappings.
Eris Drew: Any idea what is inside?
Rael Octavius: Not what is in this package. It is too small for the one I am looking for.
Rael Octavius looks at the blue wrappings more closely.
Eris Drew picks up the box.
Rael Octavius: This is addressed to Lord Gnaeus.
Eris Drew: Lord Gnaeus?
Rael Octavius: I wonder if this is related to my theft. Supposedly someone who calls herself Forget-Me-Not went on a thieving spree during the last dark day.
Eris Drew: Sounds like trouble.
Lia [Quori]: [Translation] That can't be good.
Eris Drew [Quori]: [Translation] Agreed.
Rael Octavius: What's that?
Eris Drew: What's what?
Rael Octavius: The pretty language. I have never heard it before.
Eris Drew: The language of my home.
Eris Drew: Quori.
Rael Octavius: You are not from "The City" then?
Eris Drew: Uh...
Eris Drew: No clue.
Rael Octavius looks confused.
Rael Octavius: You do not know where you are from?
Eris Drew: I am an orphan.
Rael Octavius: My sympathies.
Eris Drew: Yeah, yeah heard that before. It is a much more interesting lifestyle, I have never actually minded it.
Rael Octavius: Very well. I guess you found out what perpetrated the murder now.
Eris Drew: Guess it wasn't all that bad that it knicked me.
Rael Octavius: You probably want to get that looked at though.
Eris Drew: Eventually.
Rael Octavius: I have my package to find yet, so I will be on my way. What is your name? We may cross paths again.
Eris Drew: Eris.
Rael Octavius: Please to meet you, Eris. If you ever need employment, go to The Fiery Stag and see my father. He hires mercenaries to do missions for King Ran.
Eris Drew: I'll keep it in mind.
Rael Octavius: See you around.
Rael Octavius turns to leave.
Eris Drew [Quori]: [Translation] Bye
Rael Octavius waves as he disappears around the corner.
Eris Drew [Quori]: [Translation] Shall I peek, Lia?
Eris Drew turns the box in her hands
Lia [Quori]: [Translation] Up to you. It belongs to a noble, so it might be a secret.
Eris Drew [Quori]: [Translation] Secrets are always interesting.
Lia [Quori]: [Translation] Maybe let Ridley decide what to do.
Eris Drew lifts the lid slightly and holds it away from herself.
Nothing happens when Eris opens the package.
Eris Drew [Quori]: [Translation] I'll give it to the captain.
Eris returns to the tower with the box and enters the captain's office.
Captain Ridley: Success, agent?
Eris Drew: More or less.
Captain Ridley looks up from his paper work.
Captain Ridley: Ran into some trouble then?
Eris Drew: Well, yes, but I had some help.
Captain Ridley: That is good. So, what did you find out?
Eris Drew: There definitely was a creature; I killed it.
Captain Ridley: What kind of creature?
Eris Drew: Uh...
Eris Drew: Miphet?
Captain Ridley makes a funny face.
Captain Ridley: Mephit?
Eris Drew: Yeah, yeah. That is what the Herald's son called it.
Captain Ridley: Rael helped you out? That is good. He has been searching for a package that was stolen from his street up near the castle.
Eris Drew: That is what he told me.
Captain Ridley: Did you find that there too?
Captain Ridley points at the wrappings and the box.
Eris Drew: Yeah.
Captain Ridley: So Silas was stashing something then.
Eris Drew: I would guess that may be the case.
Eris Drew sets the package on the desk.
Captain Ridley takes a look at the package.
Captain Ridley: Lord Egnatius Gnaeus? Well, I will make sure he gets his property without further delay.
Captain Ridley sets a pouch on the desk in front of Eris.
Eris Drew sighs.
Captain Ridley: For a job well done. Also, see the healer on the way out and get that taken care of.
Eris Drew rolls her eyes.
Eris Drew picks up the pouch and tosses it in the air.
Eris Drew: That's it?
Eris Drew: I killed a monster...and found a box.
Captain Ridley: Healing is not cheap.
Captain Ridley smiles.
Eris Drew: Therefore, that is it.
Captain Ridley: Off you go.
Eris Drew [Quori]: [Translation] Damn
Eris Drew [Quori]: [Translation] I could use some food.
Eris Drew [Quori]: [Translation] Or, a drink.
Eris Drew leaves the tower and follows the main street north across the bridge. She makes her way to The Rogue Spoon where she might contact someone from Blue Midnight.
