Undecitina 10th, Year One of the Reign of High King Ran

Life for Perri, Fennimore, and Rael has been passing by rather quickly. Perri has finally managed to get a hit in on High King Ran during training, Fennimore has been scheming to try and figure out how to get Majestic in trouble while training with Sark the Blind and Rael has been busy in court.
They are all at The Fiery Stag after another long day.
Rael Octavius takes a break from his meal looking slightly alarmed.
Rael Octavius: You know it is almost that time of the month again.
Perri Elastime: Hey, did ya see it? I hit the King!
Rael Octavius: I heard.
Fennimore: Really, how did the King take it?
Perri Elastime: With a bruise.
Fennimore: Well good, I wouldn't want you on the wrong side of your teacher.
Perri Elastime: More ale! I'm celebrating!
Rael Octavius: He has not noticed that he is not bruising you anymore?
Perri Elastime: I don't know. He hasn't said anything.
Mindartis: Coming right up.
Perri Elastime: Hard to tell what he notices.
Fennimore: I'm sure it's more than he lets on. That's how you get to be King.
Rael Octavius: He must be distracted or not letting on. He is too observant as a warrior to not notice something like that.
Perri Elastime: That's why I'm an open book. I don't want to be king or queen ever.
Rael Octavius: We should probably get you to one of the temples before too much longer.
Rael Octavius: Unless, of course, you want to remain...
Mindartis approaches with more ale.
Perri Elastime: But which one?
Mindartis: Here you are. Don't stop on my account.
Perri Elastime: Could you bring food, too?
Perri Elastime: I'm always hungry. I don't think I should drink my supper.
Rael Octavius: I suggest Lehnbor, but I am prejudiced toward him being one of his clerics.
Mindartis: More food coming right up.
Fennimore: Lehnbor's good, and no, I don't want to remain like this.
Mindartis heads back to the kitchen.
Perri Elastime: What about the Billiken? I hear he fixes stuff right.
Rael Octavius: Unless you are meant to be lycanthropes.
Fennimore: Hmm, do you think Claricia could clear it up?
Perri Elastime: I'm pretty sure ratty is not my style. I like it pretty.
Rael Octavius: Right, Claricia is a cleric too, is she not.
Perri Elastime: If I am meant to be a were-creature, I should be a tiger with a smile.
Rael Octavius laughs.
Perri Elastime grins.
Rael Octavius: I am guessing tiger bites hurt a lot more than rat bites.
Fennimore: The rat bite hurt enough that I don't want to try for a taste test where I'm the tasty morsel.
Perri Elastime: Might. But a bite is a bite.
Perri Elastime: Clarica might want what I am not willing to give.
Rael Octavius: More than alms at the very least.
Fennimore: Well, I guess it's Lehnbor then.
Rael Octavius: There is always The Father and Mother. Alavasia is very understanding.
Perri Elastime: Maybe you could put a good word in for me with Lehnbor.
Rael Octavius: Certainly. They are all in the same area. Which one?
Perri Elastime: Which one is closest?
Fennimore: They are practically neighbors, but The Mother and Father is a smidge closer.
Perri Elastime: Do you think the Mother and Father would be kind to someone like me?
Rael Octavius: They are known for their kindness.
Perri Elastime: Okay.
Perri Elastime: Fenn, do you agree? Or is Clarisia a better fit for you.
Fennimore: Ha ha, let's try Alavasia.
Rael Octavius: So be it.
Fennimore: I don't feel any need to worship Borgose.
Rael Octavius: Besides it being prohibited?
Fennimore: Doesn't seem to be stopping Claricia and her friends.
Rael Octavius: No one is really enforcing the "mythical" ban anyway.
Fennimore: Then we'll let them be and focus on our own issue.
Perri Elastime: She at least claims all present are willing participants.
Rael Octavius: First thing tomorrow before we get busy with our day or do we want to try and get it done now?
Fennimore: Let's finish our dinner and see if they'll treat us tonight.
Rael Octavius: Alright.
Perri Elastime: How about now while I still have the glow from smacking the King. After dinner, of course.
Rael Octavius digs back into his dinner.
Mindartis delivers more food to the table.
Perri Elastime: Thanks Mindartis.
Fennimore digs in.
Perri Elastime eats with relish.
Mindartis: By the way, your tab is a bit ahead, so no charge tonight.
Perri Elastime: Ahead?
Fennimore: Besides, I've been eating too much cheese. I need some variety.
Mindartis smiles at Rael.
Rael Octavius nods to Mindartis.
Fennimore looks from Mindartis to Rael questioningly.
Mindartis heads back to the bar.
Perri Elastime: I hear melted cheese inside spicy peppers is the new thing gastronomically.
Rael Octavius: Apparently, I have left a few too many gold.
Fennimore: Sounds delicious.
Perri Elastime: It does!
Fennimore: Nice that they kept it on your tab. Some places would have just pocketed the change.
Rael Octavius: That could charge my breath weapon.
Fennimore: That's not all it will charge up.
Perri Elastime laughs.
Rael Octavius: My father brings in a lot of business, especially since he returned.
Perri Elastime: So where is your Mum, Rael?
Rael Octavius: She has been working with the Archmage on some research.
Fennimore: We still haven't met your parents. I especially want to talk to your father. I wonder if that job he posted for finding things is still open.
Rael Octavius: There is always something.
Rael Octavius: We might want to see what the priest wants before you get employed by my father.
Fennimore: Good idea.
Fennimore: I'd hate to accept a job from your father and turn all twitchy nosed in the middle of it.
Rael Octavius nods.
Perri Elastime: He might notice something is up.
The group finishes up their dinners and prepares to head over to the temple.
Fennimore humms a little tune to himeself, "Hickory, Dickory, Dock..."
Rael Octavius: Is that bard getting to you again, Fenn?
Perri Elastime: Notices and hums Three Blind Mice.
Rael Octavius shakes his head.
Rael Octavius: We should get going.
Fennimore (startled): Hmm, What? Bard? Where?
Perri Elastime stands up.
Perri Elastime: Not to worry, Fenn.
Rael Octavius pushes away from the table and stands up.
Fennimore: Oh, good. Let's go. I'm tired of being mousy.
Fennimore slides off his chair.
Perri Elastime: Ratty, Fenn. Ratty.
Fennimore: That too.
Rael Octavius heads towards the back door.
Perri Elastime follows.
Fennimore follows behind.
Fennimore -> Perri Elastime: Looks like we have another back door man with us tonight.
Perri Elastime -> Fennimore: Ha ha ha.
Perri Elastime: I'm thinking I shall get a familiar. I wonder what would partner with me?
The group heads through the alley behind the inn and enters Ballista Street, turning north. They then cut down another street west before coming to Castle Street before heading north again.
Perri Elastime watches for danger.
The streets are bustling with activity, but no threats present themselves. They arrive in Park Square where The Temple of The Father and Mother towers along the southeast side.
Perri Elastime: Intimidating temple isn't it.
Rael Octavius: It can be to those not aligned with it, but there is nothing to fear here.
Fennimore: Priests like their edifaces.
Rael Octavius: As do kings and nobles.
Fennimore: True.
Perri Elastime: Thank the Gods I'll never be any of those.
Rael Octavius: Armee and Alavasia are the King and Queen of the pantheon.
Perri Elastime: I'll follow you.
Rael Octavius leads the way in through main entrance.
Perri Elastime follows.
Fennimore continues to hum, "see how they run" as he follows.
Perri Elastime: I hope he doesn't strike me down with lightning for entering.
An acolyte stands in the vestibule ready to greet those who enter.
Acolyte smiles as you enter.
Fennimore -> Perri Elastime: More likely to chop off our tails tonight.
Perri Elastime: I see I have given you an ear worm.
Acolyte: Greetings! Welcome The Temple of The Father and Mother or Mother and Father if you prefer.
Rael Octavius: Greetings.
Rael Octavius bows.
Fennimore -> Perri Elastime: I think it was the rat that gave us worms.
Rael Octavius: I am Rael Octavius, an acolyte of The Temple of Lehnbor. My friends here are in need of some assistance from Mother Alavasia.
Perri Elastime -> Fennimore: I think I need to seal up the hole in my wall.
Fennimore stands uncomfortably, shifting his heft back and forth from one foot to the other.
Acolyte: What manner of assistance. I am sure Mother Alavasia would be most willing to assist.
Perri Elastime looks ready to bolt.
Rael Octavius turns back to Perri and Fennimore.
Perri Elastime: Umm...
Rael Octavius: How do you want to handle this? Do you want to explain or should I do the talking?
Fennimore (timidly): Uh, we need a curse, or something, removed.
Fennimore -> Rael Octavius: You seem to understand this better.
Acolyte: A curse? Oh, my. Well, of course. Please, please. Follow me. You will need to speak with a priest.
Perri Elastime: Only if the priest is nice.
Acolyte begins to lead the way into the congregation.
Acolyte: Of course the priest is nice.
Rael Octavius motions for the other two to follow.
Perri Elastime: There is no "of course" about it. I've encountered not nice ones.
Fennimore follows the acolyte.
Acolyte: This is a shame. You will not find any mean priests here.
Perri Elastime follows.
Rael Octavius follows.
Perri Elastime twitches her nose.
The acolyte leads the group around the right side of the great hall to an alcove shrine where a priestess is lighting candles.
Acolyte: Excuse me. These paritioners have a matter they wish to discuss with you.
The priestess turns and regards the group with a smile.
Acolyte: She wll help you. I must get back to the vestibule.
The acolyte makes his way back to the entrance.
Perri Elastime looks at the priestess carefully.
The priestess notices the nervousness and trepidation of Perri and Fennimore.
Fennimore watches the acolyte depart.
Priestess: What is your concern and how may I be of assistance?
Rael Octavius waits to see if Perri or Fennimore will explain.
Fennimore: Um, yes, I guess we should just be out with it.
Perri Elastime (blurts in a rush): Um, we wish the curse of rattyness and cheese consumption lifted.
Fennimore: We met a hairy man with a long nose and whiskers, and um, he bit us.
Fennimore (looks at Perri): Or, there's that.
The priestess looks confused at first and then it dawns on her to what they are referring.
Perri Elastime: Please, I don't want to be mean.
Priestess: Oh, my. How long ago?
Fennimore: A few weeks.
Fennimore: Long enough to, umm, uhh, change.
Fennimore: Just once, though.
Perri Elastime: And not on purpose.
Priestess: Oh, dear. I hope no one was hurt. We really should take care of this as next week would be another episode.
Fennimore sucks in his breath.
Perri Elastime: The change... The change just happened. Couldn't control it.
Perri Elastime: Can you help us?
Fennimore: I don't remember much from it.
Fennimore: Except, waking up afterwards.
Priestess: This is the way it goes. It is good you have sought help. This chapel should suffice for removing your curse.
Perri Elastime: Umm, what is...is the cost of such a cure?
Priestess: You could make a significant donation to the temple or go on a quest for Alavasia or Armee.
Fennimore: A quest? That could be interesting.
Perri Elastime: A quest is like a mission right?
Perri Elastime: And a mission is like a job?
Fennimore: In wonder if King Ran would let you go?
Priestess: Yes, a quest is a mission. It will likely be dangerous, but you have survived an attack by a wererat, so I imagine you would be able to accomplish this.
Perri Elastime: He might...If I asked him...when he was in a good mood.
Priestess: What do you mean by "If King Ran will let you go?"
Fennimore: Survived, but barely.
Rael Octavius: Perri, here, is High King Ran's Bladesinger.
Perri Elastime: I'm in training with the High King.
Fennimore: If we hadn't accidentally lured him into a trap, we would have been as holey as swiss cheese.
The priestess looks impressed.
Priestess: The King is not aware of your condition?
Perri Elastime: Maybe he will want a break cause I smacked him a good one earlier.
Fennimore: I'd like to keep it that way.
Fennimore looks to Perri.
Fennimore -> Perri Elastime: You're glowing again.
Perri Elastime: Hey. If I wanted him to know I would have told him.
Rael Octavius: Ah.
The priestess smiles at Rael.
Perri Elastime chuckles.
Priestess: I have just the quest.
Fennimore: Say, if this quest is so dangerous, maybe you should join us, Rael. I wonder if we could lure the knight into it as well?
Perri Elastime: She has a quest.
Fennimore shuts up and listens.
Rael Octavius: I will help if allowed.
Perri Elastime: Is it a reasonable quest? I can't do something I disagree with.
Priestess: Of course you may. Any others you might request are welcome as well.
Fennimore smiles.
Perri Elastime -> Fennimore: I don't think we need a bard.
Fennimore thinks to himself, "If the quest is dangerous, it might be just the place to dispose of a bard without anyone noticing."
Perri Elastime -> Fennimore: He might want more background than we want to give him.
Priestess: There is a weapon, not unlike the ones carried by each of you, that was lost or possibly stolen that needs to be recovered. It is believed that it can be found in the hills east of the city.
Perri Elastime -> Fennimore: My rattiness can remain a half remembered bad dream.
Fennimore -> Perri Elastime: He would love to hear that we were cursed. I'm sure he would spin a yarn out of it.
Fennimore -> Perri Elastime: Probably for the best.
Fennimore turns his attention back towards the priestess.
Fennimore: A weapon lost in the hills to the east of the city? That's not much to go on.
Priestess: Now, shall we be rid of your curse? Ladies first, perhaps? I can explain more once you are safely cured of your malady.
Fennimore: After you, m'Lady.
Perri Elastime: Okay. What do I need to do.
Priestess: Stand here next to me and receive Alavasia's Blessing.
Perri Elastime closes her eyes and holds her breath.
The priestess places her right hand on Perri's head and begins to chant in a beautiful, but unknown tongue.
Rael Octavius begins to chant with the priestess in the same language.
Perri Elastime waits for fire to burn the curse out of her.
Priest [Celestial]: Mother Alavasia, release this spirit from this unfortunate curse and see to her wellbeing. So be it.
Perri Elastime experiences an odd tingling that most would find very disconcerting if not for the torture that she has experienced in the past.
Perri Elastime clenches her teeth.
Priestess: That should do it. Sir Halfling, if you would join me.
Fennimore (squeezes Perri's hand): Feel better?
Fennimore bravely steps up next to the priestess.
Perri Elastime: Uhh, feel different.
Perri Elastime give Fenn's hand a quick squeeze.
The priestess and Rael repeat the chant while she places her hand on Fennimore's head.
Perri Elastime watches closely.
Fennimore experiences an intense tingling that is quite discomforting, but passes quickly.
Priestess: And your curse is now also lifted.
Fennimore tries to stay relaxed and breathing, but catches his breath as the curse passes.
Perri Elastime: Fenn, you okay?
Fennimore: Yeah, I think so. That was kinda odd.
Perri Elastime: Not quite what I was expecting.
Fennimore: Can't say I knew what to expect. I've never been cursed or de-cursed before.
Fennimore: At a cursory glance, I seem to be all in one piece, so I'm happy with that.
Priestess: It is an unpleasant curse. You handled it quite well. Some jump out of their skins, so to speak, when they have that particular curse removed.
Perri Elastime: Can you fix skin?
Priestess: What do you mean?
Fennimore: Perhaps it hadn't had time to fully set in yet.
Perri Elastime: Remove the remnants of old wounds.
Priestess: Scars?
Perri Elastime: Of a sort.
Fennimore: Perhaps you could show the Priestess your hands?
Perri Elastime pulls off a glove.
Priestess: There is an ancient and powerful miracle that can regenerate...
The priestess looks taken aback.
Priestess: Goodness, gracious! How ever did that happen?
Perri Elastime: I have many reminders of an unpleasant time.
Perri Elastime: Some courtiers bite.
Priestess: Dear child, I am so sorry. This is terrible.
Perri Elastime: Can it be fixed?
Priestess: I understand that it can, but no one I know of has the power to repair this much scarring. Someone of my calling with the power of The High KIng would need to perform such a miracle. Only elves and possibly dwarves might possess such power in these times.
Perri Elastime: I feared it was so. I think magic binds my skin. There was certainly some aspect of ritual involved.
Perri Elastime pulls her glove back on.
Fennimore: I'm sorry, Perri.
Perri Elastime: Just another quest to complete.
Perri Elastime sighs.
The priestess gathers her wits.
Fennimore: Right, now, about that quest. A weapon lost in the hills to the east. Right. What else can you tell us?
Priestess: The Gold River runs out of a lake nestled among the Gold Hills. This lake is fed by a spring within the hills. You need to enter the tunnels from which this spring flows and search the caves within. A vile creature is said to guard this weapon and a hoard of treasure. Recover the sword and what treasure you can and return.
Perri Elastime: What sort of vile creature?
Fennimore: That's what I was thinking.
Priestess: It is a monster. Few have seen it but for the results of its attacks. Miners have avoided the area for a while now due to its presence.
Priestess: There is a mining camp to the north of the lake. You may get a better feeling for what you are dealing with from them.
Fennimore turns towards Rael.
Fennimore: Have you heard any news of this creature?
Perri Elastime: I hope King Ran believes I am ready for some empirical training.
Rael Octavius: I have not.
Fennimore looks questioningly to Perri.
Fennimore: Are you ready for such a test?
Perri Elastime: How will we know this sword?
Rael Octavius: We may need a bit more muscle.
Priestess: It is a rapier, much like yours. However, it has a star sapphire as a pommel.
Fennimore: Ooh, shiny
Perri Elastime: Perhaps Munkustrap is available.
Perri Elastime: He is more knightly and burlier than most.
Rael Octavius: He might appreciate an adventure like this.
Fennimore: A chance to test his mettle versus a vile creature while we rescue the lost treasure.
Rael Octavius: Eris or Tazdar might be options as well.
Rael Octavius: Munkustrap would be my first choice.
Fennimore: As long as it isn't the bard.
Rael Octavius laughs.
Rael Octavius turns to the priestess.
Rael Octavius: I have grown fond of these two and will do what I can to help them fulfill their quest.
Fennimore: I accept this quest.
Perri Elastime turns to the priestess.
Perri Elastime: Thank you.
Fennimore takes a deep breath and slowly releases it.
Fennimore: It's good to not feel the weight of that curse any more. Thank you.
Rael Octavius: So, I get to venture outside the city two months in a row. I hope this adventure fares as well as the last.
Fennimore -> Rael Octavius: I hope we don't run into any dragons.
Perri Elastime: I'll convince The High King.
Rael Octavius: Maybe Alasatar, the castle guard lieutenant, will be able to help if we cannot find someone else.
Perri Elastime: Beside, he will want me to go and keep an eye on you two.
Fennimore: Alasatar?
Fennimore winks at Perri.
Rael Octavius: He was my partner when I visited Shorixlisys.
Fennimore: Your "partner." Got it.
Fennimore: I need some more arrows. I wonder if I can get my rapier enchanted?
Rael Octavius: More like personal body guard.
Fennimore smirks.
Fennimore: I'm sure he enjoys guarding your body.
Rael Octavius: This is not The Rogue Spoon, Fenn.
Fennimore: You're just digging yourself deeper.
Fennimore: Whatever.
Perri Elastime: Best stop digging.
Fennimore: I won't judge.
Rael Octavius turns to the priestess.
Rael Octavius: Are you sure he is not cursed?
Perri Elastime: Perhaps you are cursed, Rael.
The priestss smiles and nods.
Perri Elastime: Cursed with us.
Rael Octavius: Only with friends with gutter minds.
Fennimore smiles.
Perri Elastime: Only you would think sex belongs in the gutter.
Fennimore: Such is my life.
Rael Octavius (to the priestess): Thank you for your assistance.
Rael Octavius: We should be going now.
Fennimore: Yes, I think we've taken enough of the priestess' time. We need to prepare for our quest.
Perri Elastime: Thank you. We will return with the sword.
The group departs the temple and returns to The Fiery Stag to discuss preparations for their trip to The Gold Hills.

Decitina 18th, Year One of the Reign of High King Ran

The date is Phasetin, 18th Decitina, 11 1
Between scheming about Munkustrap's dilemma, training, and trying to sneak into every nook and cranny of The Rogue Spoon to find the elusive shrine to Borgose the Blue, the next couple of weeks pass you by.
Darkness has fallen again, though most thought it might only be the one day as it started on Borgosetin of the second week of the month, which is always dark. However, several days later it is still dark.
Perri Elastime: Oh! Should we go check on your Mom?
Fennimore: Let's check her cart first.
Perri Elastime: Okay.
Perri Elastime: Let me grab my warm cloak and hat.
Several strange phenomena have occurred in the castle over these dark days and the castle has gone into lockdown. No one has been allowed to leave.
Fennimore: Have you heard any news about the strange phenomenon around the castle?
Perri Elastime: No, not really.
Perri Elastime: You?
Guests have been requested to remain in their rooms and court has been suspended until further notice.
Fennimore: Hard to hear anything when we are confined to quarters.
Perri Elastime: Good thing we are sneaky, otherwise it would be hard to talk.
Fennimore: You know that. Maybe one of the rat people made it past the castle wards.
Perri Elastime: Cook has been complaining about missing cheese.
Fennimore: Now I wonder who moved the cheese?
Perri Elastime: Whenever I see cheese I eat it.
Perri Elastime: So it wasn't me
Castle Guard: You really should not be passing between rooms through the halls.
Perri Elastime: Do you know of any secret passageways to do it?
Fennimore: Thanks for the tip. Do you know why everyone is cooped up?
Castle Guard: Some strange magical thing is all I have heard. The archmage has been investigating from what I understand.
Perri Elastime: Because I can't stay in my room any longer.
Fennimore: Strange magic, hmmph. Probably that bard is messing up our lives again.
Castle Guard: Your rooms are right next to each other. Pass quickly, but not too often, and I'll look the other way.
Perri Elastime: Yours or mine?
Fennimore: Alright, we'll try to stay out of sight. How about yours for now.
Perri Elastime heads back to her room.
Fennimore sneaks in behind her.
Castle Guard: As you were, then.
Fennimore: Oh, should I feel naughty, like the knight, for being invited into a lady's boudoir?
Perri Elastime: Nah!
Fennimore (laughing): I never understood why humans were so uptight about sex.
Perri Elastime: Besides this isn't naughty.
Perri Elastime: Don't know. They are just weird that way.
Fennimore: So, what should we do. The guards don't want us wandering the halls.
Perri Elastime: I don't know I'm a bit worried about your mom.
This goes on for a couple of days, but one of these days when you are sleeping in your separate rooms, your sleep is disturbed.
Perri Elastime, in what feels like a dream or more precisely, a nightmare, you wake up in agonizing pain, screaming. The screaming seems to be combined with other distant, muted screaming from somewhere else.
Fennimore, in what feels like a dream or more precisely, a nightmare, you wake up in agonizing pain, screaming. The screaming seems to be combined with other distant, muted screaming from somewhere else.
Fennimore (pained): Aaaaagh!
Fennimore pants and sweats.
Perri Elastime, the screaming morphs into yowls.
Perri Elastime: Mab, mother of nightmares, release me!
Fennimore, the screaming morphs into yowls.
Perri Elastime: Fuck, fuck, fuck!
Perri Elastime smells people approaching.
Fennimore smells people approaching.
Perri Elastime hides.
Fennimore goes to the washbasin to wet my face and looks in the mirror.
Perri Elastime feels compelled to get small. She slides out of her bed--and clothes--and slips under the bed. It feels more comfortable here.
Fennimore, your vision seems strange like something is blocking it at your nose.
Fennimore has rat-like features as he peers into the mirror.
Perri Elastime looks around for a small hole to hide in.
Fennimore paws at his face, thinking, "This can't be real."
Perri Elastime: Be very, very quiet.
Perri Elastime sees a vent under the head of the bed.
Fennimore pinches himself, "Wake up, this is just a nightmare."
Fennimore hears a knocking at a door nearby.
Perri Elastime slips into the vent.
Fennimore: That bard must be casting some kind of illusion.
Fennimore sneaks to the door and peeks out to see who's in the hall; where they are.
Perri Elastime enters a narrow passage, but it doesn't seem constraining.
Fennimore sees a guard a couple of doors down. The door opens and the guard enters, disappearing from view.
Perri Elastime is hungry like she's never been hungry before.
Fennimore: When the hall is empty, sneaks as quietly as a mouse over to Perri's door and ducks inside.
Perri Elastime goes down the passage a bit and waits for the nightmare to end. They alway end eventually!
Fennimore sneaks into Perri's room without being noticed.
Fennimore (whispering): Perri, are you here?
Perri is nowhere to be found. Her bed looks slept in and her nightgown hangs off the side of the bed.
Fennimore (whispering): Perri, it's Fenn. I need help.
Fennimore, Perri doesn't seem to be in earshot.
Perri Elastime, hunger gnaws at you.
Fennimore tiptoes back to the door and listens for a movement in the hall.
Fennimore: Fine time to sneak off to the kitchens.
Perri Elastime sniffs for food smells.
Fennimore hears nothing, but he smells oiled metal and body odor.
Perri Elastime's nose leads her down the tunnel.
Fennimore: Sniff, sniff, that's odd.
Perri Elastime gingerly heads down the tunnel, watching and listening for danger.
Fennimore's nose leads him under the bed where he sees a vent. Perri must have crawled in there, but she wouldn't normally be able to.
Fennimore: How did she do that?
Fennimore, she must have made herself small enough to fit in there...like rat-sized.
Perri Elastime, hunger drives you onward.
Perri Elastime wanders the tunnels, following her nose until she finds an exit.
Fennimore thinks about his long rat like nose and Perri squeezing herself into a rat-hole. If she did it, maybe I can too.
Fennimore thinks rat, rat, rat, over and over and tries to squeeze himself small enough to fit through the vent.
Fennimore's point of view changes as he shrinks.
Fennimore: It's working.
Perri Elastime: Sniffs at the opening, watches for movement, and waits to make sure it is safe.
Fennimore scampers under the bed, through the vent.
Fennimore fits fine in the tunnel under the bed.
Fennimore sniffs and listens, as he tries to follow Perri's trail.
Perri Elastime smells nothing but an immense amount of things to eat.
Perri Elastime looks for a dark place closer to the food.
Fennimore has no trouble following Perri's scent.
Perri Elastime bites herself trying to remain calm and hidden.
Fennimore: Cheese! She's going for the cheese. Blessed are the cheesemakers.
Fennimore: Don't get caught in a rat trap, Perri.
Perri Elastime notices that there seems to be several low ceilings about this room...the undersides of cabinets.
Perri Elastime thinks about cheese and heads under a cabinet, watching for traps, thinking of poison.
Perri Elastime manages to avoid a rather large mouse trap.
Fennimore exits the tunnel after following Perri's scent, but doesn't see where she went.
Perri Elastime: The people food. That's what I need.
Perri Elastime, the cheese in the trap is very tempting.
Fennimore Looks around trying to recognize where he is in the castle.
Fennimore, there seems to be several low ceilings about this room...the undersides of cabinets.
Fennimore doesn't recognize the location.
Perri Elastime: I want the good stuff.
Perri Elastime recognizes she's in the kitchens.
Fennimore sneakily moves from one cabinet to the next, searching for Perri. Watching out for big folk.
Fennimore, the smells of food are becoming overwhelming and you are very hungry now.
Perri Elastime wonders if there is something she can use to spring the trap without hurting herselh?
Fennimore: Food!
Perri Elastime is distracted by the smell of...Fennimore?
Perri Elastime (whispering): Fenn?
Perri Elastime's call only comes out as a squeak.
Fennimore hears a squeak from under a different cabinet.
Fennimore (whispering): Perri?
Fennimore's call only comes out as a squeak.
Perri Elastime squeaks quietly.
Perri Elastime hears a squeak from under a different cabinet.
Fennimore sneaks towards the source of the squeak.
Perri Elastime, there is a fork under the cabinet.
Perri Elastime bites the end of the fork and tries to push it to the trap, keeping well out of the way of the snap.
There is a loud slap and a clang.
Perri Elastime disarms the trap.
Fennimore thinks, "Oh no, Perri and dashes towards the snap.
Perri Elastime run under a different cabinet.
Fennimore sees a large rat scurrying under a cabinet.
Perri Elastime sees a large rat approaching from under the cabinets.
Fennimore turns and follows the other rat.
Perri Elastime: Sniff, sniff.
Perri Elastime (squeaking): Fenn
Perri Elastime realizes this rat smells like Fennimore.
Fennimore: Squeak.
Fennimore twitches his nose.
Perri Elastime: Squeak, squeak!
Fennimore: Sssh.
Perri Elastime runs to cheese cupboard.
Fennimore: Oh, where is she off to now? We need to get back to her room.
Fennimore follows Perri.
Perri Elastime, another somewhat smaller rat hisses as she approaches the cheese larder.
Rat: Get away.
Rat: Mine.
Perri Elastime: Mine!
Perri Elastime: Starving.
Fennimore: There's two of us and we're hungry.
Rat: Uh, oh. My bad.
The rat scurries off.
Fennimore feels the power of the cheese.
Perri Elastime climbs cupboard to get to cheese.
Perri is intent on getting into the cabinet the normal way, but Fennimore smells the cheese more strongly from under the cabinet.
Fennimore: Perri, follow me. There's cheese down here.
Perri Elastime: We want human cheese, not cheese left for rats and mice.
Perri Elastime: Poison.
Perri Elastime comes down.
Fennimore finds a hole gnawed into the bottom and backside of the cabinet.
Perri Elastime: So hungry.
Fennimore: Look here. A hole to glorious cheese.
Perri Elastime: Make sure we can get to all the cheese.
Fennimore: Any cheese is good right now.
Fennimore climbs into the cabinet.
Perri Elastime: Not if cook poisoned it.
The hole is fairly small, but the two are sure they can squeeze in.
Perri Elastime follows Fennimore.
Fennimore looks around and sniffs for poison.
Perri Elastime tries to find a way up to the top shelf.
The two climb into the cabinet. There is poison set in a couple places on each shelf, but it is very obvious. The shelves are easily accessed through vents in the back corners of the cabinet.
Fennimore looks for swiss cheese.
Fennimore: Ah, cheese, holey cheese.
Perri Elastime looks for cheddar.
Each rat finds their desired cheese and begin to feast.
Perri Elastime: I want to bring a hunk to my room.
Fennimore (between nibbles): Eat your fill, then we need to get back to your room before we change back to people. It won't do to wander the castle naked.
Perri Elastime: Let's take it to go.
Cook (muffled and distant): What was that?
Perri Elastime: Hurry!
Footfalls enter the kitchen and pause.
Fennimore freezes.
Perri Elastime grabs a hunk of cheese to take with her and freezes.
Cook (muffled): Hmm, must be the phenomenon again.
The foot falls leave the room.
Perri Elastime sneaks with the cheese.
Fennimore starts breathing again.
Fennimore grabs a chunk of cheese and sneaks down the back of the cabinet.
Perri Elastime sneaks down the cabinet holding her cheese in her mouth.
The two giant rats exit the cabinet through the bottom with a little difficulty carrying their cheese.
Fennimore scampers back to the cabinet he came in under.
Perri Elastime sneaks to the passageway.
The rats skitter under cabinets to the vent and exit the kitchens. Before long, they are back under the bed in Perri's room.
Perri Elastime eats cheese.
Fennimore finishes nibbling on his cheese.
Perri Elastime: How long will we stay like this?
Fennimore: I don't know. I've never been a rat before.
Fennimore: Do you think the bard did this to us?
The rats finish eating their cheese and then begin to feel rather strange.
Perri Elastime: The change was like the wicked teeth of winter.
Fennimore can't seem to stay awake.
Perri Elastime can't seem to stay awake.
Fennimore pulls his shirt into a nest and curl up in it.
Perri Elastime climbs up onto the bed.
Perri Elastime digs under the covers.
Perri Elastime: Fenn, might be tight under the bed.
Perri Elastime: The nightmares never last forever. It only seems that way.
The rats fall asleep where they curl up.
There is a knock at the door that awakens Perri and Fennimore. Perri is curled up in a nest of covers on the bed completely naked, her dreads completely combed out and all the leaves, twigs and feather are strewn throughout the bed. Fennimore is curled up under the bed with his nightshirt wedged uncomfortably under his hip. He hits his head on the leg of the bed as he starts awake.
Fennimore pulls his nightshirt on quickly and rubs the bump on his noggin.
Perri Elastime: Gah.
Castle Guard (from beyond the door): Oi! Is everything all right in there?
Perri Elastime: Heya! All is well.
Fennimore stays quiet.
Perri Elastime puts on the nightgown.
Castle Guard: OK. Is that halfling, Fennimore, in there with you. He isn't answering, but I haven't entered his room yet, since I know you go back and forth.
Fennimore: Yes, I'm here.
Fennimore: Can't two people have a little peace?
Castle Guard: Oh, good. I'm glad I was the one who was making the rounds.
Perri Elastime: Fenn, you're not suppose to kiss and tell.
Fennimore grins.
Castle Guard: As you were then. Apologies.
Fennimore: None needed.
Perri Elastime grins too.
Fennimore notices bits of cheese on the floor under the bed.
Fennimore: It wasn't all a bad dream.
Neither of the two seem to have any recollection of what happened exactly.
Fennimore -> Perri Elastime: So, umm, do you know what I'm doing in your room?
Perri Elastime collects her decorations.
Perri Elastime -> Fennimore: Um, we had a tryst or something? Look at my hair. What happened to it?
Fennimore: Looks like we had a wild time of it. I'm sorry to say I can't remember more.
Perri Elastime: It would be nice to remember a good time, but sorry I don't.
Fennimore: The last I recall I was sleeping. I think I had a bad dream.
Perri Elastime: I feel like i didn't sleep at all.
Fennimore: Yeah, you wore me out.
Perri Elastime: I always knew you were on the lazy side.
Fennimore: I'm a halfling. What can I say?
Fennimore: You want industrious? Go have a roll in the hay with a dwarf.
Perri's arms and lower legs are covered in scars. It looks like scenes were carved into her skin.
Perri Elastime: Nah. Friendly is fine by me.
Fennimore: Oh, are you hurt. Did I do that to you?
Perri Elastime: Nah, you didn't do this. You said you'd help me avenge this.
Perri Elastime: I'm covered head to toe with such decoration.
Perri Elastime sighs.
Fennimore: Oh, Perri, I'm so sorry.
Fennimore: How could anyone be that cruel to you?
Perri Elastime: They consider themselves artists and musicians.
Fennimore: Pah, a curse be on all artists. From my bard to those who would mar you.
Perri Elastime: I survived because I am strong and refused to die.
Fennimore: I'm glad you did.
Fennimore: I'm glad you found your way here.
Perri Elastime: I've never not remembered what happened. We were not even drinking. There'd be bottles.
Fennimore looks around.
Fennimore: All I see are a few cheese crumbs.
Perri Elastime: Did you have cheese in your room? Mine was all gone.
Perri Elastime has a flash of scurrying through tunnels.
Fennimore: I always keep a little stash of food with me. Especially now that the castle is locked down.
Fennimore has a flash of scurrying through tunnels.
Fennimore starts.
Perri Elastime: They seem to think I need very little food.
Fennimore: Tunnels? Did we go exploring last night?
Perri Elastime: I remember hiding, running.
Perri Elastime's bite throbs a bit.
Fennimore's bite throbs a bit.
Perri Elastime: It sounds like something we might do.
Fennimore grabs his shoulder.
Perri Elastime: what is it?
Fennimore: Oh, I thought that wound had healed.
Fennimore: Where the rat-man bit me weeks ago.
Perri Elastime: Show me.
Fennimore loosens the ties on his night shirt to reveal the bite on his shoulder.
Perri Elastime: Is it painful?
Fennimore: Just a little.
Fennimore: You were bitten that night too, weren't you?
Perri Elastime: Mine aches too.
Fennimore: Maybe we should see the healers.
Perri Elastime: But we are stuck here. Do you think they will let us go out?
Fennimore: Would they keep us locked up if we are ill? It could spread around the castle.
Perri Elastime: I wonder if Rael is around? Maybe he could help us get to the healers. He always has the inside tracks.
Fennimore: I'll get dressed and ask the guard. But, I haven't seen Rael in weeks, since his parents returned home.
Perri Elastime: We could try the infirmary.
Perri Elastime starts pulling on some clothes.
Light suddenly streams in through the windows of Perri's room.
Perri Elastime: Hmm, what is going on out there?
Perri Elastime walks to the window.
Fennimore: The suns have returned. I bet they'll lift the quarantine on the castle now.
As Perri looks out of the window she can see the four-star sun blazing again in the sky.
Perri Elastime: You came over in your nightshirt?
Fennimore: I was asleep. Maybe sleep walking?
Perri Elastime: I'm just so irresistable.
Fennimore winks.
Fennimore: Yes, you are.
Perri Elastime smiles.
Perri Elastime: Go get dressed you. We will see if we can get some help after.
Castle Guard walks back down the hall pass the rooms.
Fennimore waits for the guard to pass and then tries to hurry to his own room to get dressed.
Perri Elastime: Hey, Malcome is there a healer in the infirmary.
Castle Guard: The High King has given permission to move about the castle and resume normal activities.
Perri Elastime: Thank, heavens!
Castle Guard: Where else would one find a healer, except maybe at a temple.
Fennimore: Oh, bless the cheesemakers. It'll be good to not be sneaking around in the dark again.
Castle Guard: From what I've heard, you are well acquainted with the infirmary.
Perri Elastime: That is not a nice thing to say to a lady.
Castle Guard: But to a lady bladesinger?
Perri Elastime: I never noticed that the healer was chained to a table there.
Castle Guard shakes his head and continues down the hall making his proclamation.
Perri Elastime: Bladesingers should not need the services of a healer.
Fennimore: We all need a little help from our friends.
Perri Elastime: Should we maybe go to the temple for a more private consultation?
Perri Elastime: I'm sure most things get to the King and his High sneakiness.
Fennimore: Maybe, though I'm not sure what's to be secret.
Fennimore: And, yes, the King probably has informants in all of the temples as well.
Rael Octavius: Hello. How have you been. Your hair looks nice that way, Perri.
Fennimore: Rael, old friend. We were just talking about you. Wherever have you been?
Rael Octavius wanders down the hall towards Perri and Fennimore.
Perri Elastime: Nice that you like it. I'll have to fix it soon.
Fennimore: I like it this way too.
Rael Octavius: Oh, the king sent me on a mission and I met my parents in South Town.
Fennimore: Ooh, a secret mission? Do tell.
Perri Elastime: You can tell us over food. I'm hungry.
Rael Octavius (smiling): I would, but then I might have to kill you.
Rael Octavius: Kidding.
Fennimore (smiling): It would be intesting to see you try.
Perri Elastime: If you can't tell you brother and sister, who can you tell.
Fennimore: Tell you what. Let's find some food, maybe at the Stag, and then we can all exchange secrets.
Rael Octavius: Food would be good.
Perri Elastime: Hey does this mean your father is back?
Rael Octavius: Excellent. You can meet my father.
Perri Elastime: Great.
Perri Elastime's nose twitches.
Rael Octavius (wiggling his own nose with his finger): What's that?
Perri Elastime: What?
Perri Elastime: Is he at the Stag?
Rael Octavius: He is.
Fennimore looks at Perri curiously and feels a desire to twitch his own nose.
Rael Octavius: He may be a bit busy having been gone for so long, but I can introduce you to him.
Rael Octavius: You have an itchy nose?
Fennimore: When he catches up from his backlog, I would love to talk to him about getting some work.
Perri Elastime: Sometimes.
Rael Octavius: This is what he does in The Stag, provides work.
Rael Octavius: Let's go. They're serving chicken today.
Fennimore: Wonderful. Now, for the third time. Let me get dressed and we can get going.
Perri Elastime: If you must.
Fennimore enters his room and dresses quickly before returning to his friends in the hall.
Rael Octavius: So, Perri, what was up with the lockdown?
Perri Elastime: I don't know. There was some phenomena going on.
Rael Octavius: I returned a week ago and couldn't get in.
Rael Octavius: Not more quicklings, I hope.
Perri Elastime: I don't think so.
Perri Elastime: Couldn't get in? The castle was closed?
Perri Elastime: Rael, what do you know about rat bites. Mine seems to have healed, but it still aches.
Fennimore: Alright, I'm ready. Let's get some cheese.
Rael Octavius: Rat bites? When did you get bit by a rat?
Perri Elastime: Few weeks ago.
Rael Octavius: Were you sick, have sewer plague?
Fennimore: The castle has a rat problem in the sewers. But, we agreed to share our secrets over breakfast.
Rael Octavius: Let's go.
Perri Elastime: Let me grab my feather and we can walk.
The group exits the castle and heads over to The Fiery Stag Inn for some food, conversation and an introduction.
Rael Octavius: How's training going? Getting any licks in on The High King yet?
Perri Elastime: Not yet, but he is getting fewer on me.
Rael Octavius: This is good; progress.
Perri Elastime: Either that or he is getting old.
Rael Octavius laughs.
The group arrives a The Stag and find it is still fairly busy with darkday residents.
Perri Elastime ties back her mass of long curly hair to get it out of the way before entering the stag.
There is a line of mercenaries in front of the steps to Reggot's area.
Rael Octavius: He is quite busy, it seems.
Perri Elastime: Let's eat before introductions.
Rael Octavius: There are some open seats in the far corner.
Fennimore: After you.
Mindartis hustles around serving folk and such.
Perri Elastime heads to the far corner taking a seat to watch everyone.
Rael Octavius: Watch your pockets.
Fennimore: Rough crowd today.
Rael Octavius takes a seat at the table.
Perri Elastime holds her pouch.
Perri Elastime: Seems everyone was couped up.
Rael Octavius: Hopefully this will clear out quickly.
Fennimore: I doubt they'll try anything with you and your father both here. They'll never get a decent job again if they try to roll you in plain sight.
Perri Elastime laughs.
Rael Octavius: If they're good, we'll never know until they are long gone.
Fennimore: On the other hand, I've been couped up in the castle for days. I could stand a little scrap.
Rael Octavius: Remind you of anybody?
Fennimore: True, I wouldn't recognize her if she were sitting across the table from me.
Rael Octavius: Exactly.
Fennimore: Speaking of which, that's one of the secrets to discuss. But, let's finish Perri's "tail" first.
Perri Elastime: I hate being under house arrest.
Fennimore waves to Mindartis.
Mindartis nods in acknowledgement.
Fennimore: So, while you were away, Perri went exploring and found a secret door in the kitchens.
Fennimore: I helped her unlock the door and we explored the tunnels until we came out in the sewers. A strange rat-man jumped us down there and we couldn't do a thing to stop him.
Fennimore: We ran away and as he chased us, he triggered a trap and got fried.
Perri Elastime: Lucky for us.
Perri Elastime: We couldn't hurt him.
Fennimore: And the rest of the castle, too. If he had gotten loose, he could have wreaked havoc.
Rael Octavius listens, but it is obvious he isn't pleased about the adventure.
Perri Elastime: Stop being an old scowl puss.
Rael Octavius: You are lucky, but what do you mean you couldn't do anything to stop it?
Rael Octavius: You had your weapons, correct?
Perri Elastime: I would hit it and the darn thing healed right up again.
Fennimore: My rapier went through it like a shishkebab, but came out clean as a fresh baked cake. No blood, nothing.
Rael Octavius looks alarmed.
Rael Octavius: Did both of you get bit?
Perri Elastime: But we got away and the trap killed it.
Fennimore: Aye. but they got better.
Rael Octavius: Anything strange happen, say, last night?
Fennimore: Well, yes.
Perri Elastime: Other than Fenn and I having a tryst? No.
Rael Octavius: A tryst?
Perri Elastime: Well, isn't that what you call it when you wake up naked together?
Fennimore: Well, it seems that way, though we don't quite remember what happened. We woke up together in her room. Inflagrante delecto.
Rael Octavius: Don't remember?
Rael Octavius [Draconic]: Tiamat's Turds!
Perri Elastime: Rael, calm down. You are going to burst something.
Rael Octavius (whispering): You two are cursed. That was a wererat.
Fennimore: Cursed?
Rael Octavius: Lycanthropy.
Perri Elastime: I wouldn't go that far. I don't seem cursed.
Fennimore: Wererat. Cheese. Tunnels. Maybe.
Perri Elastime: I definately like cheese, but that is not a bad thing.
Rael Octavius: Not maybe. It's not easy to get rid of that curse. It takes powerful magic.
Perri Elastime: I like secret passages too.
Perri Elastime: What did you say?
Fennimore: Do you know any paladins? Maybe Munkustrap can help us?
Perri Elastime: We could go to a temple.
Rael Octavius: You're going to need a priest or a wizard from Magus Universitis.
Perri Elastime: We could go there. We have money.
Rael Octavius: At least Full Phase just passed. You have a month before it takes you again.
Perri Elastime: What do you mean takes us?
Rael Octavius: When the moons are in Full Phase, it triggers the tranformation.
Perri Elastime: Then what?
Perri Elastime: We go eat cheese?
Rael Octavius: Eventually, you become ravening beasts if we don't remove the curse.
Perri Elastime: That doesn't sound good.
Rael Octavius: It isn't.
Fennimore: Well, at least we have a month before the next transformation.

Nonotina 27th, Year One of the Reign of High King Ran

Fennimore and Perri finish up at The Fiery Stag for the night.
The next day sees Perri in for some more training and Fennimore continuing his search for Dee. Perri finishes up about midday as The King is called away.
Perri Elastime: Hmm, I'm starving.
Perri Elastime goes to the kitchen looking for food and secret passages.
Perri finds here way to the kitchens in the palace though she has no luck finding any secret passages along the way. However, while she is in the kitchens grabbing some food, she catches a hint of the slightest breeze between a couple of cabinets.
Perri Elastime takes a steaming mug over by the cabinets and watches the steam.
The steam from the mug swirls and is carried into the kitchens.
Perri opens the left cabinet and finds stacks of serving dishes and crocks full of utensils.
Perri Elastime closes it and looks in the other.
The cabinet on the right holds jars of preserves of various types. Fruits, various kinds of picked foods, and other things like pig's feet and the like.
Perri looks around the kitchen and finds that there aren't any staff around at the moment, though a cook was leaving when she arrived.
Perri Elastime checks around the outside of the cabinet.
Perri Elastime feels around the edges for a space.
Perri notices a set of parallel grooves in the floor to the right of the right-side cabinet. They are very faint.
Perri Elastime looks for herbs for her tea and something to eat.
Perri Elastime: While she eats, she will try to discover a latch.
Perri finds herbs for her tea and an assortment of pastries, fruits, and sausages on a table and in a cabinet nearby. She goes back over to the grooves in the floor and thinks that some kind of combination of pressing the floor between these grooves will reveal a passage.
Perri Elastime steps between the grooves, "Perhaps it is for the cooks to carry food."
The floor gives between these grooves as Perri steps.
Perri Elastime tries to move the cabinet while stepping.
The cabinet doesn't budge.
Perri Elastime turns in place.
Perri Elastime looks around.
Perri notices a stool with an odd arrangement of legs over at one of the work tables.
Perri Elastime investigates the stool.
The work table seems normal enough but this stool five legs that are arranged so only any two legs line up with each other in an odd five-sided shape.
Perri Elastime sits on the stool.
The stool seems stable enough but only when sitting on it in a particular direction.
The cook that was leaving when you entered returns.
Perri Elastime: Hey Cookie, why does this stool have so many legs?
Perri Elastime: It is not really a comfortable place to sit.
Durvan: Oh, that stool? The court wizard morphed in a fit of pique or so I am told. It is quite tricky now to sit on.
Perri Elastime: Rael's mom?
Durvan: No, no. The archmage that advises The King. Dae'Klyesis never shows a temper. Have you met Master Octavius' mother?
Perri Elastime: No, she has been gone.
Durvan: I had heard this. On a mission with Reggot, I suppose.
Durvan: You may want to clear out of here for now. The staff will be arriving soon to prepare the evening's meal.
Perri Elastime: Have you heard if Fennimore is around? He usually finds me after training.
Durvan: The halfling? Haven't seen him since breakfast.
Perri Elastime: Sure I'll go.
Perri Elastime grabs a few pasteries as she leaves.
As Perri leaves, she notices Duvan rearranging the direction to stool faces and sit on it as he gets to work preparing some vegetables.
Perri Elastime wanders towards Fennimore's room still looking for secret passages.
Perri and Fennimore nearly run into each other as they round a corner.
Perri Elastime: Hey, where have you been?
Fennimore: Hi Perri, where have you been?
Perri Elastime: Kitchens of course.
Fennimore: I was out looking for my friend Dee, then I checked the bailey expecting you to be practicing with the King.
Fennimore: The Kitchen, oooh, what's cooking?
Perri Elastime: They are just getting started for dinner. Cookie just kicked me out but I snagged some pasteries.
Fennimore: Enough to share?
Perri Elastime: Of course.
Fennimore: You're a life saver. I was about to whither away to nothing.
Perri Elastime hands Fennimore two pastries.
Fennimore pats his plump tummy.
Perri Elastime: Hey, that's my line.
Fennimore takes a pastry and starts nibbling at it.
Fennimore (between bites): So, what should we do? Care to see more of "The City?"
Perri Elastime takes a bite out of her pastry.
Rael Octavius walks up.
Perri Elastime: Sure that would be fun.
Fennimore: Hi, Rael.
Perri Elastime: Hi, Rael.
Fennimore: Did your parents return safely?
Rael Octavius: They have been delayed. Have not arrived in South Town yet, apparently.
Rael Octavius: Hey, Fennimore, have you checked on your mother? I hear a quickling went rampaging through one of the markets.
Fennimore: Oh, no I haven't been out to see her in days.
Perri Elastime: That seems strange.
Perri Elastime: We should check on her, Fenn.
Rael Octavius: High King Ran got a message from my folks today but I have not heard the details. I am sure they are fine.
Fennimore: I'm sorry your parents are delayed.
Rael Octavius: Does your mother sell flowers?
Fennimore: Yes, she does, Flora's Fruits and Flowers.
Rael Octavius: Oh, dear. Well, you will be glad that The Iris saved her and the others that were attacked.
Perri Elastime: What?!
Fennimore: The Iris? You mean I owe that troublesome troubador for saving my ma's life now?
Rael Octavius: I believe Munkustrap von Rumm did that.
Fennimore: Munkustrap. Oh, that's a relief.
Perri Elastime: What happened?
Rael Octavius: Apparently one of the Fey assassins got away from the castle after all. Nearly killed three merchants in the market, one being your mother, Fennimore.
Fennimore: Oh dear.
Fennimore: My poor mum is not used to this kind of excitement.
Perri Elastime: She must have been frightened.
Rael Octavius: There are rumors that another one of these quicklings is causing havoc in Star Plaza still.
Perri Elastime: We should bring her something to cheer her up. I'm sure at least one of the vendors was her friend.
Fennimore: Yes, let's go. I wonder what we can bring her.
Rael Octavius: I am sure your presence will be welcome if nothing else.
Perri Elastime: There is another one about? It could hurt other innocents.
Rael Octavius: You would be the one to hunt it down, Perri.
Perri Elastime: We should find it an dispatch it.
Fennimore: We should hunt it down. It's too dangerous for her to hunt on her own.
Perri Elastime: Come on, Fenn.
Rael Octavius: I'm in.
Perri Elastime: Let's go.
Fennimore leads the way out of the castle as quickly as his short legs can carry him.
Perri Elastime: You know I still have no healing potions.
Perri Elastime runs too.
Fennimore: Me either.
Perri Elastime: runs too
The trio make there way towards the market where Flora sells here flowers.
Rael Octavius: There is an apothecary along the way.
Fennimore: Excellent idea. I'll pick up an extra potion for mum.
Perri Elastime: That is a very good idea.
They arrive at the apothecary a few blocks from the castle.
Perri Elastime: I want two potions of healing.
Fennimore: I'll take the rest.
Fennimore: Perri, you keep your two, I'll give one of mine to mum.
Perri Elastime: Okay, I will look for something else.
Perri Elastime: After we take care of the little blighter terrorizing Star Plaza.
Perri Elastime hands over 100 gold
Fennimore pays 275 gold.
The merchant passes over six potion vials, one slightly larger than the others and collects gold from Perri and Fennimore.
Perri Elastime: You ready?
Fennimore: Always.
Fennimore: Rael?
Rael Octavius: Ready.
Perri Elastime: Let's go.
Fennimore: To Flora's we go.
The trio makes it to the market without incident. They find Flora's cart all battened down and secure. Other merchants are hawking their wares. In the northwest corner of the market you notices a sign. It has "Majestic Wares" painted in colorful letters.
Fennimore grimaces.
Fennimore: Thinks to himself, I may have to check that out later on.
Perri Elastime: Your mum must be out of sorts if she is not here.
Fennimore: Let's try at our hole.
Perri Elastime: Lead the way.
Rael Octavius: Lead the way.
Fennimore heads further south into Star Plaza.
Perri Elastime follows watching for trouble.
As the three walk into the more residential area of Star Plaza where Flora's hobbit-hole is, Perri catches a glimpse of swift movement up ahead.
Perri Elastime: I see something.
Perri Elastime: That way.
Perri Elastime points.
Winter Court Quickling races across the street and disappears behind a building.
Fennimore: Let's try to keep together, shall we?
Rael Octavius: Excellent idea.
Rael Octavius: Hang on before you run off.
Fennimore: Be quick. We can't let that thing go rampaging around here.
Rael forms an enboldening bond between Perri and Fennimore.
Fennimore: Ready?
Rael Octavius: Good.
Perri Elastime: Born ready
Fennimore moves up to and hides alongside the building where the quickling disappeared.
Rael Octavius begins to move forward and spots the creature by the side of the house. Launches a bolt of radiant energy hoping the give his companions a better chance of engaging the creature.
The bolt of radiant energy crashes into the creature and it collapses.
Rael Octavius: Oh, that was easier than I expected.
Perri Elastime moves forward stealthily.
Perri Elastime looks around for more danger.
Perri brushes against the bush as she moves up while looking around and some twigs snap off. Having made more noise that expected, she opts to begin a bladesong in case there are others.
Fennimore uses his eye for detail to look for hidden creatures.
Fennimore doesn't detect any other intruders in the area.
Fennimore creeps up to the corner to peek around.
Fennimore sees nothing but the dead quickling around the corner.
Fennimore pokes the dead one to make sure its really dead.
The quickling appears to be very dead.
Fennimore: Rael, was there only one quickling?
Rael Octavius: That is the only one I saw.
Rael Octavius moves up wearily.
Rael Octavius: I don't think there are any more.
Fennimore: Then, let's get back on the road to mum.
Rael Octavius: Anything on it?
Perri Elastime: Let me just look quick from a higher vantage point.
Fennimore searches the quickling while Perri looks around.
Perri Elastime vaults up onto the roof south of her and looks around.
Fennimore finds 24 coppers in a purse on the quickling's belt.
Fennimore: Meh, a few coppers; not much else.
Fennimore: Once upon a time, this would have fed me for days.
Perri has a look around but only spots a couple of commoners walking along the road to the north away from them.
Perri Elastime: I don't see anything of interest.
Perri Elastime jumps down.
Perri Elastime: Let's find your mum.
The trio finally arrive at Flora's hobbit-hole. She is sitting in a chair out front doing flower arrangements.
Flora looks up as you approach.
Flora smiles though is noticably shaken.
Perri Elastime: Lady Flora, you are well?
Fennimore: Mum, are you okay?
Flora: I'll recover.
Perri Elastime: What is the matter?
Rael Octavius noticing Flora is still injured from her encounter, steps up and provides Flora with a healing spell.
Flora: I actually did not see what got me.
Flora: Some creature attacked the market, apparently.
Perri Elastime: Please tell us what happened.
Fennimore: Was it small, quick, and blurry?
Flora: The fine knight that escorted me home described it like that, yes.
Flora: Whatever it was stabbed me in the back.
Fennimore frowns.
Perri Elastime: Oh my!
Perri Elastime: How are you feeling now?
Flora: Much better after your friend here spelled me.
Rael Octavius: Greetings, Lady Flora. I have heard much about you. I am Rael.
Perri Elastime: Here. You sit and rest. I will make you some tea. Perhaps with a bit of fortifying brandy.
Flora: Another kind friend of my son's?
Fennimore: Oh dear, there go my manners again. Mum, this is Rael Octavius, son of the King's Herald.
Flora: Oh, a noble?
Flora: Two in one day.
Perri Elastime: May I enter your home to do that?
Rael Octavius bows.
Rael Octavius: At your service, ma'am.
Flora: Oh, yes my dear, Perri. Of course.
Fennimore: Two? Who would the other be?
Perri Elastime looks at Fennimore all concerned.
Flora: The strapping young knight that escorted me home. Old Deep Bend family, von Rumm, I believe.
Fennimore: Munkustrap von Rumm, of course.
Rael Octavius: Yes, one of the oldest noble families of "The City."
Fennimore: I'm glad you had a knight to get you out of trouble. Maybe, I need to be spending more time with you to protect you.
Perri Elastime turns and enters the hobbit-hole.
Flora: Oh, don't be ridiculous. You are all grown up now. You can't be taking care of me all the time.
Perri Elastime starts making tea. Adds some brandy for fortification.
Fennimore: Well, will you indulge me for a few days at least? I want to be sure there is no more trouble in the market.
Perri Elastime leaves two gold, one electrum, and 20 coper in a cup.
A cloaked figure, quite a distance a way, ducks out of sight as you talk to Flora, but this catches your attention.
Perri Elastime brings tea out to Flora.
Flora: Thank you, my dear.
Perri Elastime: Here you go.
Fennimore -> Rael Octavius: Did you see that?
Fennimore -> Perri Elastime: Hey, I think we're being followed again.
Rael Octavius -> Fennimore: Yes. That seemed unusal.
Perri Elastime -> Fennimore: What? Again? Where?
Rael Octavius points south.
Fennimore -> Perri Elastime: A cloaked person was trying to hide up there. Rather poorly I might add.
Rael Octavius: That wasn't one of The Knives.
Perri Elastime: That should warm your heart and soothe the shakes.
Fennimore: Mum, I think we should get you inside to drink your tea.
Flora: But it's such a nice day.
Perri Elastime: Yes it is a nice day, but you've had quite a shake up.
Fennimore (holding a hand out and looking to the sky): Yes, it is now, but I feel a change coming on. I think there may be a storm brewing.
Flora looks up at the sky.
Flora: Really?
Perri Elastime looks for others following.
Fennimore: You can trust me.
Rael Octavius: Most definitely, ma'am.
Flora: Oh, very well. Help me get my flowers inside, please.
Perri Elastime: Sure thing.
Fennimore bustles about to get Flora and her flowers into her hobbit-hole.
Perri Elastime picks up some of the flowers to take inside.
Perri Elastime follows Fennimore and Flora.
As you enter the hobbit-hole with everything that needs to come in, you all see a number of thugs emerge from the south.
Perri Elastime -> Fennimore: We have company.
Fennimore: Yup, definitely something nasty brewing out there.
Perri Elastime -> Fennimore: I saw three.
Fennimore: One for each of us?
Rael Octavius: Looked more like two each.
Perri Elastime: You saw six?
Fennimore: That evens the odds a little.
Fennimore: Mum, it looks like there is trouble outside. We need to go take care of it. Make sure you and your neighbors are safe.
Rael Octavius: Should we just try to have a conversation with them?
Perri Elastime: Flora, something nasty is going down.
Fennimore: They didn't look like there were in the mood for a chat, did they?
Perri Elastime: No, look ornery to me.
Rael Octavius: I am very good at negotiation.
Perri Elastime locks Flora's door.
Rael Octavius: Wait them out?
Fennimore: Rael, if you want to talk, maybe Perri and I should sneak out the back to get behind them. Just in case your negotiations go astray.
Perri Elastime: You can try talking but...what Fennimore said.
Fennimore: We're not certain they are here for us or mum or one of her neighbors. I don't want them raising a ruckus in this neighborhood.
Perri Elastime: Flora, you lock the door after Rael. Fennimore and I will back him up from out the back.
Perri Elastime: Let's go.
Flora: As you wish.
Fennimore: Follow me.
Rael Octavius: I'll give you a minute to get out back.
Perri Elastime: Like a baby duck.
Perri Elastime follows Fennimmore.
Fennimore leads Perri into the root cellar to the back door.
Fennimore pauses to listen at the door.
Fennimore hears indisinct talk that is at least 15 to 20 feet away to the north.
Fennimore -> Perri Elastime: Okay, I think we're clear if we're careful.
Perri Elastime: Move quietly.
Fennimore opens the door quietly and sneaks outside.
Perri Elastime -> Fennimore: All I hear is my heart beating.
Rael Octavius: Make sure you lock this door after me, ma'am.
Rael Octavius steps out the front door.
Perri Elastime sneaks out.
Flora locks the door behind Rael.
Rael Octavius: Greetings my fine men. What may I help you with?
The pair silently emerge from the cellar.
Thug (chuckling): How come we knew you would be the talking sort.
Fennimore listens to Rael's negotiations, waiting to come to his aid.
Rael Octavius: Smart fellows.
Fennimore readies his bow.
Thug: You're one of the King's lackeys, no? We don't like tyrants.
Rael Octavius: Tyrants? I believe you have been misinformed. High King Ran is anything but a tyrant.
Thug: See, boys. Didn't I say that would be the response?
The others around the area laugh.
Rael Octavius: So, I may have heard about you. You are members of the Deep End Rakes if I am not mistaken.
Perri Elastime -> Fennimore: South or north first.
Rake Thug (grinning learingly): This one has some street knowledge. Probably not a good idea to let him get home.
Fennimore -> Perri Elastime: Let them make the first move. South is doing the talking. He might be in charge. Let's get him first.
The thugs all draw heavy maces and threaten to advance.
Fennimore scopes out the lead thug and fires an arrow at him before moving up toward the front of the hobbit-hole.
Rake Thug: Arrrrggghh! Get him!
Perri Elastime wards herself with a magical blurring effect and begins a bladesong.
A thug from the north charges up and takes a couple of wild swings at the blurred bladesinger.
Rael Octavius reachs out to each of his friends and they suddenly feel like heroes.
Perri Elastime: Thanks, Rael.
Fennimore: Oh, yeah.
Rael Octavius then prepares to defend himself.
Another thug that was hidden emerges from behind a building and fires his crossbow at Fennimore.
Fennimore: T'is but a scratch.
The bolt strikes Fennimore, but is partially blocked by Rael's spell.
A thug from the north races in to strike at Rael.
The first strike lands, but Rael manages to withstand it and keeps this spell going.
Another thug advances but stops short of entering melee and goes into a defensive stance.
Another thug slides across the road and aims his crossbow at Rael through his compatriots.
Rael is hit hard again, but withstands the jolt.
The leader steps up to Fennimore and attacks.
Both attacks miss the halfling.
Fennimore disengages from the closest Rake.
Fennimore fires another arrow at the leader and hits.
The leader drops unconscious.
Perri Elastime casts a sleep spell over the immediate vacinity before moving to flank one of the Rakes with Rael.
Perri's sleep spell seems to have no effect on any of the thugs.
The thug engaged with the blur tries to follow her and strikes.
Of the two strikes the second one hits, but Perri remains blurred.
Fennimore: Heal thyself, Rael!
Rael Octavius disengages and wards himself from further attention.
The thug that fired at Fennimore loads another bolt and fires at the halfling again.
The bolt hits.
Fennimore: Now you're starting to piss me off.
The thug that Rael escaped turns toward Perri and attacks.
Both swings of his mace miss.
Another Rake charges Fennimore and attacks with his mace.
Swinging twice, the only thing he hits is a planter, which shatters.
Fennimore: Don't you go making a mess o'me Mum's home.
The thug that fired a crossbow at Rael drops his crossbow and tries to hit the blurred bladesinger.
This first strike hits and breaks Perri's concentration.
The second strike also hits.
Fennimore uses his Insightful Fighting against his new foe.
Fennimore drops his bow and draws his rapier.
Fennimore sizes up this new thug, but his rapier slides wildly off the handle of the mace.
But then the blade bends oddly and hits the thug anyway.
Perri Elastime: You smelly dwarf lickers.
As Perri flips over the thugs to escape only one of them manages a swing at her. He misses.
Fennimore: That's the way to do it Perri. Focus our fire.
Perri drops in behind Fennimore's opponent and skewers him.
Rake Thug: Ugh!
Fennimore: You might want to think about running away right about now.
Thugs chase after Perri.
The thug swings and bounces his mace off of a sudden shield that appears between him and his target.
Rael Octavius takes aim at the nearest thug and fires a radiant bolt of energy at him.
The thug lights up like a tree on the Day of Light.
Rael Octavius retreats.
The glowing thug abandons his crossbow and chases after Rael.
Another thug chases after Perri and takes two inaccurate swings.
Fennimore: I told you, you shoulda ran away.
Fennimore's opponent strikes him with his mace once and then misses.
Rake Thug: You're still outnumbered, halfling.
Fennimore: Lotta good that's gonna do you.
Another thug chases after Perri, but can't get close enough to attack.
Fennimore solidly skewers the thug in front of him and he goes crashing to the ground.
Fennimore: Perri, can you get yourself out of there?
Perri Elastime: Maybe? I'll try.
Fennimore: I think it's time we follow Rael's lead.
Fennimore uses his Cunning Action to hide behind the building from the Rakes.
Perri disengages and leaps onto another hobbit-hole.
[TURN] Rake Thug 6
One Rake looks around and only spots one of his comrades engaged with Rael. He wearily moves around the hobbit-hole.
Fennimore skewers the thug as he creeps by.
Rake Thug: Ugh!
Rael Octavius belches forth a cone of fire, engulfing the thug trying to engage him in combat.
Rael Octavius: Damn you to The Hells!
Rael Octavius steps over the burnning body and approaches the remaining thugs.
Rael Octavius: My mother is a half-dragon. Do you know what that makes me? Prepare to be burned!
The two thugs that have a sight of their comrade burning on the ground sprint away.
Fennimore: I'll say it again. I told you, you should have run away.
Fennimore uses his Insightful Fighting again.
Fennimore stabs the thug.
Perri Elastime jumps down from the top of the hobbit-hole and hits the remaining Rake.
Perri hits.
The rapier strike sends the thug sprawling to the ground.
Perri Elastime: Rael, you okay?
Fennimore searches the four dead bodies.
Rael Octavius: No. Seems I'll need to heal myself for a change.
Fennimore: I think we're all a little dinged up. Looks like you took the worst of it.
Perri Elastime drinks a potion of healing, then helps check the bodies.
Rael Octavius casts a heal upon himself.
Perri Elastime looks around for more danger.
Perri Elastime: Did you find anything Fennimore?
The trio finds an assortment of coins on the thugs: 7 gold, 8 electrum, 8 silver and 19 copper. They also each have a mace, heavy crossbows with 10 bolts and leather armor.
Perri Elastime: Are these guys wanted?
Rael Octavius: I think they are members of the Deep Bend Rakes. Some call them freedom figthers, others terrorists.
Fennimore: Freedom fighters? They didn't appear to be to interested in anyone's freedom today.
Perri Elastime: Hmm, they seemed pretty terrifying to me.
Rael Octavius: They are against everything King Ran stands for, whether justified or not.
Rael Octavius: Only because he is an monarch.
Fennimore: Let's get back inside Mum's hole before they return.
Rael Octavius: They must have realized I am from the court and thought it was a chance to hurt the King.
Rael Octavius: I don't think they'll be returning. Direct encounters with nobles that they have usually turn out bad for them. You would think they'd learn.
Perri Elastime: Did you burn up that families garden?
Fennimore: Hopefully we discouraged them from making such a foolish choice again.
Perri Elastime: I have to remember poke and run.
Rael Octavius: No. That one took it full in the face.
Fennimore: Poke, run and hide is a good strategy.
Perri Elastime: Let's see how your mom is fairing.
Fennimore: I'm glad we got her inside.
Rael Octavius: Do we want there gear?
Fennimore: Let's take what we can carry. Maybe we can sell it off.
Rael Octavius (smirking): We could sell it to Majestic Wares.
Perri Elastime: We should take it, probably call the watch too.
Fennimore: Ha ha.
Fennimore knocks on the door.
Fennimore: Mum, it looks like the storm has passed. You can open up now.
The door opens.
Flora: Oh, my. What a mess. Come in, come in.
Perri Elastime walks in carefully.
Rael Octavius: Have the Rakes ever been a problem before, ma'am?
Flora: No. They are the protectors of the common folk.
Fennimore: If it's not too much trouble, I think we should pass the night here. Make sure no one else disturbs the neighborhood.
Rael Octavius: Too many nobles around for their taste today I guess.
Flora: You're perfectly welcome to stay. It might be a little tight, but we'll manage.
Perri Elastime: You are so kind.
Flora smiles.
Flora: I'll get supper started.
Fennimore: Ooh, that sounds great. I'm famished.
Flora: Of course you are, running around like that.
Perri Elastime: Yeah, I always know what time it is around you. Time to eat!
Perri Elastime grins at Fennimore.
The meals and rest are uninterrupted.
Fennimore leaves 10 gold for Flora in her cupboard.
Perri Elastime -> Fennimore: I need to get some thieves tools.
Fennimore -> Perri Elastime: I'm sure I know a place to hook you up.
Perri Elastime -> Fennimore: We have a passage to check out at the castle if we can find a way in.
Fennimore -> Perri Elastime: I'm sure we can.
Perri Elastime: Shall we sell the unneeded stuff there?
Rael Octavius: We can say hello and see what The Iris is up to.
Fennimore: He will recognize me, but maybe you and Rael can fence our ill gotten goods through him.
Rael Octavius: Majestic knows me too, but there is no enmity between us.
Rael Octavius: He'll probably be enamored with Perri, though.
Fennimore: Brace yourself.
Fennimore: He'll compose an ear rending ballad on the spot for you.
Rael Octavius sniggers.
Perri Elastime: Maybe? He sounds kind of floofty.
Fennimore: I'm sure I don't know floofty, but it probably describes him.
Perri Elastime: Like a dandylion seed here, there, everywhere in your eyes and up your nose. Floofty!
Rael Octavius laughs out loud.
Fennimore belly jiggles as he joins in Rael's laughter.
Rael Octavius: The crazy thing is that court loves that kind of stuff.
Perri Elastime laughs along.
Perri Elastime: I can't imagine why.
Rael Octavius: I have to keep my eyes from rolling. It's nearly impossible sometimes.
Fennimore: The thought of court loving Majestic sobers up Fenn real quick.
Fennimore: Try not to hurt yourself
Rael Octavius: OK, enough about the troublesome troubadour and court.
Fennimore: Agreed.
Rael Octavius (laughing again): Floofty!
Fennimore (sniggering): Floofty.
Fennimore: That's a good one.
Perri Elastime smiles.

Nonotina 25th, Year One of the Reign of High King Ran

The trio has no issues returning to the castle from The Rogue Spoon that evening. The next day Perri trains without interruption from any fey beasties, though Rael takes every precaution, just in case.
Fennimore: As Perri trains, Fenn begins his search for Dee.
Rael Octavius: Hey, Fennimore. Where are you off too?
Fennimore: Perri looks like she's going to be busy for a while. I thought I'd search out an old friend.
Rael Octavius: Mind if I watch your back while you are out and about? We wouldn't want The Knives ambushing you alone.
Fennimore: If you're fine leaving Perri alone. I grew up in this City. I'm pretty good at navigating it unnoticed.
Rael Octavius: Perri is with the King. She'll be fine. I'll just hang back, being visually conspicuous so you have an even easier time going unnoticed.
Fennimore: Great.
Rael Octavius: I won't need to be loud like a certain acquaintance of ours. Folks will just pay attention to me just by being present.
Fennimore: That's a relief.
Fennimore: I hope your presence doesn't scare off my friend. She likes to stay unnoticed too.
Rael Octavius: We should let Perri know we'll be out for a bit.
Fennimore: Good idea.
Rael Octavius: She has nothing to worry about if doesn't approach. It will be like I'm creating a kind of shadow of sorts.
Before the two depart, they find Perri in the bailey.
Perri Elastime: Hey, where are you going?
Rael Octavius hangs back.
Fennimore: I need to find my own trainer. I thought I would look up an old friend. You probably don't remember her but she was around the day you got conked out by The Knives.
Perri Elastime: Oh, I don't remember.
Fennimore: I'll try to be back by the time you're done training with the King, then maybe we can spend some more time showing you around the City.
Perri Elastime: That would be fun. I think I'm getting better at this.
Rael Octavius: I'll keep an eye on him.
Fennimore: He rarely lets me out of his sight. It's like he doesn't trust me or something.
Perri Elastime: Maybe I could meet your trainer sometime.
Rael Octavius smiles.
Rael Octavius: What's not to trust?
Fennimore (to Rael): My rogueish good looks?
Rael Octavius nods.
Perri Elastime: His Mama's cooking is trustworthy.
Fennimore (to Perri): I would love to introduce you.
Perri Elastime: Well, maybe giving a warning might be good.
Fennimore: She always appreciates that.
Fennimore: Enjoy sparring with the King. Try to get a couple of good licks in. We'll be back soon.
Rael Octavius: Shall we go?
Perri Elastime: I'll try, but he keeps dodging them.
Fennimore laughs.
Perri Elastime: Just make sure your back after my lesson.
Fennimore: Then we'd best hurry, Rael.
Rael Octavius gives a slight bow to those in the bailey.
Perri Elastime: Have fun, but not too much fun without me.
The pair head out of the castle and out into "The City." Fennimore searches for Dee Strongbones for a few hours while Rael tries to keep track of him before returning to the castle, unsuccessful.
Rael Octavius: This friend of yours is even better at being sneaky than you are, Fennimore.
Fennimore: I think you scared her off. She doesn't like big folk very much.
Rael Octavius: Maybe I won't need to tail you. The Knives seem to have slunk into the shadows as well.
Fennimore: All the better. Though, if they kept it up, I was thinking a visit to the Tip might be necessary.
Rael Octavius: The Tip? Is that what they call the guildmaster?
Fennimore: One of the first times The Knives attacked me, they said they had a message from "The Tip". I'm guessing they meant their guildmaster.
Rael Octavius: Good to know.
Perri Elastime: We could go to The Stag. We haven't been there in a while.
A thin, dark fellow slips out of the shadows as you gather in a hall after Perri is done.
Fennimore: You getting stir crazy cooped up in here?
Fennimore: Hey, who are you?
Rael Octavius: Lord High Inquisitor? What can we do for you?
Lord High Inquisitor Mosifort: I would like a word with Master Fennimore if you don't mind.
Rael Octavius: By all means, Lord Mosifort.
Fennimore: Lord High Inquisitor? My apologies. You gave me quite a fright sneaking up on us like that. By all means, share what's on your mind.
Perri Elastime: Uh. Fenn, you okay with that?
Rael Octavius nods to Perri to step away for a bit.
Perri Elastime holds up a finger waiting for Fennimore.
Fennimore looks confusedly from Rael to Perri and back then nods.
Fennimore: Um, I suppose so, if the Lord prefers some privacy.
Perri Elastime: Perri steps away with Rael
Lord High Inquisitor Mosifort: Yes, privacy is appropriate.
Perri Elastime: But within sight!
Lord High Inquisitor Mosifort waits for Rael and Perri to move down the hall a bit.
Lord High Inquisitor Mosifort: I have a proposition for you, master halfling. I have heard you have a knack for sussing things out, a skill highly prized by myself and the King.
Fennimore watches his friends retreat, unsure of how to act around the Lord High Inquisitor.
Perri Elastime watches the body language of the two.
Fennimore is slack-jawed for a moment, astonished that his skills have impressed upon the King then gathers his wits together.
Fennimore: I think you've heard rightly. Though, I am but a little halfling. It helps me find things that others often overlook.
Lord High Inquisitor Mosifort: Then you are interested?
Fennimore: By all means.
Lord High Inquisitor Mosifort: Lord von Rumm has been pedaling his influence a bit more than prudent regarding the watch and the activities of his son, Munkustrap. We cannot have our Senators interfering in the security of "The City,", so I would like to know what you know about this situation and investigate it a bit more. Any information you can provide would be quite...valuable.
Fennimore hesitates as he recalls the incident between Munkustrap and the City Watch.
Lord High Inquisitor Mosifort seems to be reading his body language as he hesitates.
Fennimore: I met Lord von Rumm and his son once, each on separate occasions. They both seemed to be upstanding citizens.
Lord High Inquisitor Mosifort: As one would expect.
Perri Elastime picks up the gist of the conversation without hearing the specifics.
Fennimore: I would be happy to investigate further, though, courtly intrigue can be more dangerous than walking the streets in the dark of the moon.
Lord High Inquisitor Mosifort: Very true.
Lord High Inquisitor Mosifort: I am looking for more of a street-level view anyway.
Fennimore (motioning to Rael and Perri): I was just about to give my friends a street-level view, as you say, of "The City."
Fennimore: I think their participation could be beneficial to your request.
Lord High Inquisitor Mosifort: Rael is a busy body and Perri is very close to The King. I'd like this to be more compartmented.
Fennimore: That will complicate things.
Lord High Inquisitor Mosifort: I really just need your observations. Don't provide them with any specifics.
Fennimore: Well, if I have anything to report, how do I contact you, since you want to keep this discrete?
Rael Octavius -> Perri Elastime: I am pretty sure he does not like me; finds me to be a busy body.
Lord High Inquisitor Mosifort hands Fennimore a key.
Fennimore examines the key.
Fennimore pockets it.
Lord High Inquisitor Mosifort: There is a secret room in The Fiery Stag behind one of the fireplaces. The one in Reggot's area...near that stuffed bear. Within is a mirror. We can communicate through this.
Fennimore (surprised): Well, that seems convoluted.
Lord High Inquisitor Mosifort: It is obfuscation.
Fennimore: I hope I'm tall enough to reach your mirror.
Perri Elastime: High muckity spygreaalyness.
Lord High Inquisitor Mosifort: It is a hand-mirror. You'll have no trouble with it.
Fennimore sighs thinking, "What have I gotten myself into this time?"
Fennimore: Then, I'm your halfling but what you seek may take time.
Lord High Inquisitor Mosifort: Our profession requires time.
Fennimore: I'm glad you're understanding.
Lord High Inquisitor Mosifort: So, what do you know of the incident outside The Rogue Spoon in which Master Munkustrap was involved?
Fennimore: Not much. I only heard about it after the fact. There were some scripture pounders harassing The Spoon. The City Watch wasn't doing anything about it. Then, von Rumm the Younger appeared and dispersed them.
Lord High Inquisitor Mosifort: This is the extent of the situation as I have heard as well.
Perri Elastime is ready to expeditious retreat in if Fenn looks concerned.
Fennimore: Later that day, I overheard a watchman talking about the event. He was upset that Munkustrap upstaged him. Seemed to set his mind on getting revenge. Though, I can't say what for.
Lord High Inquisitor Mosifort: That is very interesting. I definitely have found the right man, halfling, for the job.
Fennimore: That was weeks ago, before the dark. I thought this had all blown over by now. What brought it to your attention?
Rael Octavius -> Perri Elastime: Lord Mosifort is actually one of the more reasonable High Lords.
Lord High Inquisitor Mosifort: Hearsay from a watch commander that Lord von Rumm was throwing his weight around. However, it is justified. I should have figured.
Perri Elastime -> Rael Octavius: He seems to be making an offer that can't be refused.
Fennimore: A father's love for his son is not to be taken lightly. If the Watch was trying to sully his son's name, I don't fault Lord von Rumm at all.
Rael Octavius -> Perri Elastime: Aren't they always that way?
Lord High Inquisitor Mosifort: This information has been enlightening. Thank you, Master Fennimore. I owe you a favor. If you come across any more information, you know how to reach me.
Perri Elastime -> Rael Octavius: Fennimore is going to need someone to watch his back.
Fennimore: I do and I shall.
Fennimore: If I may, I think I've kept my friends waiting too long.
Lord High Inquisitor Mosifort: As you were and good day.
Lord High Inquisitor Mosifort vanishes into the shadows.
Fennimore beckons to Perri and Rael.
Rael Octavius approaches.
Perri Elastime runs up.
Perri Elastime: So, what did he want you to do?
Rael Octavius: I'm not even going to ask what he wanted because he probably "suggested" you don't share.
Fennimore: Ug, courtly intrigue. You're right, Rael.
Perri Elastime: You definitely need backup.
Fennimore: When the time comes, I'll be sure to ask for it.
Rael Octavius: He did look pleased.
Fennimore: For now, he merely asked me to watch and listen. Tasks I am particularly adept at.
Perri Elastime: Don't worry. I'll be there whether you want it or not.
Fennimore smiles.
Fennimore: Glad to hear it.
Rael Octavius: Did I hear a trip to The Stag was in order?
Fennimore: By all means. I could use a pint or two after that.
Rael Octavius: No doubt.
Perri Elastime: I haven't started plucking the whiskers from the King's hound yet, but it is close.
Fennimore: Sounds dangerous.
Perri Elastime: Need a little excitement is all.
Rael Octavius: Excitement at tavern usually involves bruises.
Perri Elastime: Might.
Fennimore: I think I've had my share of excitement for the day. I'll be happy to sit, drink, relax, and watch you be exciting.
Perri Elastime: Do we get to go to the orcish tavern?
The trio heads over to The Fiery Stag. It is busy today, enough to require a second bartender. Most of the tables and stools are taken.
Rael Octavius: It is a good thing that my father has a private area.
Perri Elastime: Well, this place is jumping.
Fennimore: I like that idea.
Rael Octavius waves to Mindartis and then points to the raised area where they sat before.
Mindartis nods in acknowledgment.
Perri Elastime: I wonder why it is so busy.
Fennimore positions himself in a chair facing the fireplace and tries to unobtrusively study the fireplace for the secret chamber.
Rael Octavius: Everybody is back on their schedules after the darkdays.
Perri Elastime: Hmm.
Perri Elastime: So, did you find your teacher?
Fennimore: Not today. She can be skittish. It may take a few days to track her down.
Rael Octavius: I gather too much of a crowd.
Fennimore: Maybe next time you'll let me go out without a chaperone.
Perri Elastime: Not likely, I'm coming next time.
Fennimore sighs and stares into the fire some more.
Rael Octavius: You're stealthy, I stick out.
Perri Elastime snickers.
Perri Elastime: I stick out too but I think people are getting used to me.
Rael Octavius just sits back and relaxes, especially once Mindartis manages to bring food and drink.
Fennimore: You're not the only elf in town, but nearly so. I bet some of the big folk go their whole lives without ever talking to an elf.
Perri Elastime: You need someone at your back if you are going to do the bidding of his High Great Spyness.
Fennimore takes a deep draught of his ale to try to calm himself.
Fennimore: Yes, being inquisitioned by the Inquisitor was wracking.
Perri Elastime: It looked more like a job offer to me.
Fennimore: A bit of both.
Perri Elastime: Sorry.
Rael Octavius: It seemed like he got some of what he was looking for.
Fennimore: I had a nugget for him to chew on.
Rael Octavius: That never hurts.
Fennimore: Funny thing, he called you a busy-body.
Rael Octavius: Not surprised.
Fennimore: I tried to include the two of you in his request but he declined.
Perri Elastime drinks some beer.
Rael Octavius: Also, not surprised.
Fennimore: I don't know how you handle these courtly things so calmly. They make me a nervous wreck.
Rael Octavius: I was born into it. It is just normal.
Rael Octavius: Street combat, not so normal.
Fennimore: I can't begin to imagine it.
Perri Elastime: It doesn't bother me nearly so much since they can't draw blood.
Rael Octavius: Won't. Won't draw blood.
Fennimore: The streets are where I grew up. That's my home.
Perri Elastime: I haven't found my home yet.
Rael Octavius: Would you return to The Feywild?
Fennimore: Seems like the Summer Court was better than the Winter?
Perri Elastime: It is hard to be where you are considered their rescue, but I will go back and rescue some others.
Perri Elastime: The Summer Court is better than the Winter Court. Not nearly as cruel.
Fennimore: When you're ready to return, perhaps, I'll be ready to accompany you. The thought of children being tortured in the Winter Court is heartrending.
Rael Octavius: Yes. Quite unpleasant.
Perri Elastime: But I have a debt I can't repay to the Summer Court and that makes the power imbalance very uncomfortable.
Rael Octavius: A debt?
Perri Elastime: Yes. The Summer Knight stole me from the Winter Court.
Rael Octavius: So this knight is on their bad, bad side.
Fennimore: Do they know?
Perri Elastime: Oh, yes.
Rael Octavius drinks and eats.
Fennimore: Foolish Knight. When you steal something, it's best not to let the owners know who is doing the stealing.
Perri Elastime: I too am on their bad, bad side. I refused the "hospitality" of the Winter Court.
Rael Octavius: Who would accept it?
Fennimore: They have a strange sense of hospitality.
Perri Elastime: You need to bargain from a position of strength with them. I had no idea of their pastimes.
Fennimore: Then, let's get strong. Time for another round of ale.
Perri Elastime: Somewhere, I might have a family I was born into but I am long lost to them. I have very few memories.
Fennimore: Then we'll be your family.
Rael Octavius: Definitely.
The trio relaxes and watches the goings-on in the tavern until fairly late.
Fennimore: As we relax, Fenn continues to study the fire and fireplace.
Rael Octavius: I am heading home. I have some chores to attend to before my parents return.
Fennimore: I'm going to hang out here for a bit, without my chaperone.
Fennimore laughs.
Rael Octavius gets up to exit the tavern.
Perri Elastime: Good night, Rael.
Rael Octavius: Good night.
Fennimore: I can't wait to meet your parents.
Rael Octavius: It won't be long. I'd like to meet you Ma. Maybe tomorrow?
Fennimore: That soon? I would be honored.
Perri Elastime: Be safe, brother.
Rael Octavius nods and slips through the doors.
Perri Elastime smiles to herself.
Fennimore: Whew, some days I wonder if I'll ever have a moment away from him.
Fennimore gets up to put a log on the fire and study the fireplace more closely.
Perri Elastime: You will. Me on the other hand.
Fennimore: I'm not worried about you, though the Inquisitor seems to be.
Perri Elastime: Why? What does he think I'm going to do?
Fennimore: Tattle on him. He thinks you're too close to the King to include in his inquisition.
Perri Elastime: If I couldn't hold my tongue, it would be gone by now.
Perri Elastime: What are you looking for?
Fennimore: The Inquisitor gave me a key to the fireplace. I'm trying to figure out how to open it.
Between the bear and the woodpile, Fennimore spots a keyhole disguised by the patterns painted on the wall.
Fennimore: Ah, here we go.
Fennimore tries to obscure what he's doing from the crowd.
Fennimore slips the key into a keyhole in the wall and gives it a twist.
Perri Elastime stands to block the view of him.
Fennimore feels air as if a door opened, but he doesn't see it.
Fennimore focuses on the wall but still doesn't see anything, but he can definitely feel the air moving.
Fennimore follows the breeze and feels along the wall to see if there is a gap in the wall.
Fennimore's hand passes into the wall between the keyhole and the bear.
Fennimore tries to gauge how big the opening is.
Fennimore -> Perri Elastime: Look at this.
Perri Elastime -> Fennimore: Whoa! Hidden entrance.
Fennimore -> Perri Elastime: Stay here for a second.
Fennimore steps through the hidden door.
Perri Elastime -> Fennimore: One breath.
Fennimore enters a small, finely appointed sitting room with a leather chair and a side table. On the table lies a handheld mirror, face down.
Perri Elastime follows Fennimore after one breath.
Fennimore: You took that pretty literally.
Fennimore: Don't touch anything, especially the mirror.
Perri Elastime: Can't be your back up if I'm not there.
Perri Elastime: What if it was an ambush by some faction.
Fennimore: Doubtful, I think the Inquisitor and Rael's father use this room for secret chats.
Perri Elastime: Likely, but I never know who wants to do harm.
Fennimore: True. Let's get back to our ale before we're missed.
Perri Elastime slips back.
They turn toward the door and can see out into the tavern.
Fennimore pulls the door shut behind him, then removes the key, and pockets it.
Perri Elastime: That was interesting.
The pair sit down back in their seats at the table, no one the wiser.
Perri Elastime: I wonder if there are secrets like that at the castle.
Fennimore: Without a doubt. When I finish the Inquisitor's task, I'm to use that room to report my findings.
Fennimore: The only question is what do I report?
Perri Elastime: I could see the general outline but not the specifics of what he wanted.

New Skill

Fennimore realizes he needs to be more perceptive to better avoid conflicts with The Knives. He enlists his contact Dee Strongbones to help him out.

Skill Expertise

Fennimore's inquisitiveness requires great insight, so he has also enlisted Dee to help him with this. She has some suggestions for finding someone to show him the ropes on this one.

Nonotina 24th, Year One of the Reign of High King Ran

Perri's training has been every other day since it began as the King has quite a lot to do. This leaves opportunities to get out into the city and do other things such as finally collecting Fennimore's outfit and making calls in on his mother.
The King suggests purposeful, quick trips to places in the city when it is decided to head out of the castle.
Fennimore: Sounds like a good idea. Perhaps Rael can join us when he isn't engaged in his other duties.
Rael Octavius shows up at your rooms on your first day off.
Perri Elastime: Hey Rael! What is shaken?
Rael Octavius: The usual. Mostly court intrigue.
Perri Elastime: Has your mum and dad come back?
Rael Octavius: I heard that they are on their way. They are stopping at South Town for a couple of days before returning.
Fennimore: South Town? They're almost home then.
Rael Octavius: Yes, finally.
Perri Elastime: South Town is near here?
Rael Octavius: The next city south of here along the river.
Perri Elastime: I'm feeling the need to travel a bit.
Fennimore: I haven't been outside "The City." Travel would be exciting.
Rael Octavius: I haven't either.
Fennimore: Maybe, we could go meet them in South Town?
Perri Elastime: Could I make it back for training?
Fennimore: I bet the King would give you a few days off.
Rael Octavius: Perri still has training. It is still a couple of day's travel.
Perri Elastime: Well, maybe there is something we could do around here. I want a job.
Fennimore: She needs to exercise her skills in more than just the bailey.
Rael Octavius: True. Or the streets.
Fennimore: I think we've caused more than our share of havoc in the streets.
Rael Octavius: Surprisingly dangerous, they are.
Fennimore: I'm just happy The Knives have left us alone here in the castle.
Rael Octavius: They would be insane to mess with anyone in the castle.
Fennimore: That didn't seem to stop them from sending thugs against us in the streets.
Perri Elastime: No, it didn't.
Rael Octavius: I think The Iris and Forget-Me-Not have gotten their ire up.
Fennimore: The Iris kinda gets my ire up, too.
Perri Elastime: I'm kinda going snow crazy.
Rael Octavius: You said you have an outfit to pick up in the North Market that you never got to, Fennimore?
Fennimore: That's right. There's a haberdashery in the square near The Rogue Spoon Inn.
Perri Elastime: Is there a tailor there?
Rael Octavius: Maybe we can get over there today.
Fennimore: Poor guy. He probably thinks I've abandoned it like his last halfling customer.
Rael Octavius: Did you pay him upfront?
Fennimore: Tailored my cloak to fit my magnificent physique. I can't wait to see how it turned out.
Fennimore: Yes, I did.
Rael Octavius: He's not worried. Pure profit if you never return.
Fennimore: Took nearly all my spare change at the time.
Rael Octavius: You could practically buy the place now, I imagine.
Fennimore: He didn't seem too worried about the other cloak he was holding either.
Fennimore: Perhaps. But, I'd rather put my coin to supporting my ma.
Rael Octavius: That's good of you, Fennimore.
Perri Elastime: So we should go stretch our legs.
Fennimore: I'd like to get out of the castle for a bit.
Perri Elastime: Your cloak is a good enough reason for me.
Rael Octavius: The King has asked us, while we are out and about, to keep our eyes open for more quicklings. There have been reports throughout "The City" of isolated rogue fey attacking folk.
Fennimore: Oh, great. That went so well when we were protected by the castle.
Fennimore: Maybe we should stop at the apothecary and pickup some healing potions along the way.
Perri Elastime: Good plan.
Rael Octavius: We should only engage it if we can get the drop on them. Otherwise, we should call for the watch.
Perri Elastime: Now Fennimore, if there is trouble are we going to rush in and fight or fight from a distance or make it up as we go along as we have so far?
The foray across town to the North Market to get Fennimore's new clothes is surprisingly uneventful. After stopping at an apothecary, they arrive at the haberdashery in the North Market. The tailor plays happy to see you, but both Fennimore and Rael sense he is disappointed you finally showed up. The fit is perfect, however.
Perri Elastime: Looks good to me.
Fennimore: Thank you for holding my cloak. I love the fit.
Tailor: I am glad you like it. It was a pleasure doing business with you.
Fennimore: I'll be sure to tell my friends about your excellent work.
Fennimore smiles.
Tailor: Oh! Please do.
Perri Elastime checks the street out the window and only sees typical, common, everyday hustle and bustle.
Fennimore: See anything, Perri?
Perri Elastime: Just people going about their day.
Tailor: I heard there was a lockdown at the castle. What was that about?
The tailor asks, noticing Rael is with you.
Fennimore: Just your normal everyday invasion of the fey.
Tailor: Fey? Like fairies and sprites and such?
Fennimore: Yes, particularly nasty ones, this batch. Nearly killed me, they did.
Tailor: Sorry to hear that. Well, you survived. That is something.
Fennimore: It's a good thing I didn't have your new cloak. I would have bled all over it.
Tailor: Be careful then.
Perri Elastime: Can we get a beer to celebrate your new cloak, Fennimore?
Fennimore: I know a place near here, but weren't you looking for a tailor too? Maybe our shopkeeper here has something to fit you.
Tailor: To be certain. I do.
Perri Elastime: Maybe, but I don't see anything that looks wild.
Tailor: Wild isn't really my thing.
Rael Octavius smirks.
Perri Elastime: Could you make it your thing? It might be the next big fashion.
Tailor: Really? In our great rise to civilization?
Fennimore: She might be right. She has the King's ear.
Perri Elastime: Changes in style are a tailors dream.
The tailor looks over what Perri is currently wearing.
Perri Elastime: Never mind. I will find someone else with an eye for coin and an adventurous spirit.
Tailor: Wait, wait.
Fennimore: Now it's Fenn's turn to smirk.
Tailor: I see the leaf patterns. I can work with that.
Perri Elastime: Check this out?
Perri Elastime holds out the ancient raven's feather.
Tailor: Ah! You've been to the hatter near the castle.
Perri Elastime: Beautiful isn't it.
Tailor: He seems to be the only one in town that has those.
Tailor: It's his signature. All his finest hats have those.
Perri Elastime: There is sure to be a feast or a party that I will need to attend and wearing my armor might not be in the best taste.
Tailor: Tis true.
Fennimore: Oh dear, Rael, we won't need to have finery for castle feasts, will we?
Rael Octavius: Um...
Rael Octavius: Actually, yes.
Perri Elastime: Can you design something beautiful, that I can move in easily, is wild, and unexpected, and covers all of my skin currently covered.
Tailor: Let me find the silks.
Fennimore: After you've attended to Perri, I guess I'll need another fitting as well.
Fennimore sighs.
The tailor nods and dashes off.
The tailor returns with his tailoring equipment and bolts of cloth of a wide range of colors and textures. He works quite a while with Perri and comes up with a stunning design that Perri couldn't be happier with.
Tailor: It will take me about a week to put this together just right.
Perri Elastime: Your turn, Fennimore.
Fennimore: Hmph. Who knew this halfling of the streets would ever be spending so much time in the castle.
Rael Octavius laughs under his breath.
Fennimore: Okay, Perri's is beautiful, but you can tone it down a bit for me. I don't like to be noticed.
Perri Elastime: Make his elegant.
Tailor: So, master halfling. I already have your measurements...unless you've grown more. Something more on the...civilized side, perhaps?
Perri Elastime: Just don't make him too stiff.
Fennimore: Yes, not too stiff. Civilized is fine. Elegant? I'm not so sure.
Perri Elastime: Some of the courtiers look like they've poles up their backsides.
Tailor: Unassuming, but classy. Not too flashy.
Fennimore: Yes, that would be nice. I like to be able to move freely.
Fennimore: I've only had one eating contest with Perri and since. This cloak fits. I think my measurements haven't changed much.
The tailor works with Fennimore. This goes more quickly as he doesn't need to be quite as creative. In the end, Fennimore has a very nice dark suit with room to move that isn't sloppy.
Fennimore: Wow, ma will never recognize me.
Tailor: I hope you don't mind that it makes you look thinner.
Fennimore: Is that even possible? You must be an illusionist.
Tailor smiles.
Perri Elastime: How much for my clothes?
Tailor: Fifteen gold each, please.
Fennimore: A pleasure doing business with you.
Fennimore pays the tailor.
Tailor: Master halfling, yours will be ready in three days. Ma'am, yours in seven.
Perri Elastime pays the tailor.
Perri Elastime: Thank you. I look forward to seeing them.
Tailor: Such a great pleasure. Thank you for the business.
Fennimore: Now, Perri, about that beer. I hope your ladyship's senses are not easily offended as there is a tavern of ill-repute just next door. I happen to know Miss Claricia would like to meet you.
Rael Octavius: That took a good while. I hope no one is getting worried about how long we are taking.
Perri Elastime: Not being a toddler, I don't have a curfew.
Perri Elastime: A beer sounds perfect.
Rael Octavius: No. We are all adults here.
Fennimore: Excellent! Master Tailor, we shall see you in a few days then.
The tailor bid you adieu.
Perri Elastime: You will look quite handsome in your new clothes.
Perri Elastime: But they could use just a touch of color.
Rael Octavius: He is supposed to be able to blend in.
Fennimore: Thank you, Rael.
Fennimore: Now, let's find The Rogue Spoon.
Rael Octavius: We can be colorful, so he is less noticeable.
Fennimore: All the better.
Perri Elastime: He will look like a dark spot in a sea of color if parties here are anything like parties Between.
Fennimore: I can be your shadow.
Perri Elastime: Perfect.
Rael Octavius: Here there is enough dark for it to still work in his favor.
Rael Octavius (smirking): She isn't quite that wide yet.
Perri Elastime: Just remember we are only allowed to emotionally and socially wound rivals. No drawing blood.
Rael Octavius: Here, here.
Fennimore: At court? I wouldn't think of it.
The trio enters The Rogue Spoon Inn. It is busier than you have seen it before and only a few are here that Rael and Fennimore recognize.
Claricia Robert stands near the bar talking with a customer.
Fennimore finds a table with room for the three of them and waves to Claricia.
Claricia Robert nods and smiles.
Perri Elastime looks about the room and follows Fennimore to a table.
Felicia comes around from the bar with a round of drinks.
Felicia: Welcome back, strangers.
Felicia sets three mugs on the table.
Fennimore: It's good to be back. Can you let Claricia know I have a friend I'd like to introduce to her?
Felicia: Certainly.
Felicia returns to the bar.
Perri Elastime: Rael, have you been here before?
Rael Octavius: Several times.
Claricia Robert finishes up with her conversation and glides over to the table.
Claricia Robert: Hello, Fennimore and Rael. I wasn't expecting to see you so soon.
Rael Octavius: We were in the area.
Fennimore: Hello, Miss Claricia. Please allow me to introduce my friend, recently of the Fey Court and newly the King's student, the Lady Perri Elastime.
Claricia Robert: Of the Feywild? And the King's student? What kind of student?
Fennimore: Miss Perri, this is the Lady Claricia, the Mistress and our host and for an all too brief period of time, my employer.
Perri Elastime: A good one I hope.
Claricia Robert smiles and sits next to Fennimore.
Perri Elastime smiles.
Claricia Robert: Please to meet you, Lady Elastime. Welcome to my establishment, such as it is.
Perri Elastime: Lady Claricia, a pleasure to meet you.
Claricia Robert: So, in what is it that the King is instructing you?
Perri Elastime: Bladesong.
Claricia Robert looks over at Rael, surprise.
Claricia Robert: So, they finally showed.
Rael Octavius: Yes. It was a bit of a surprise.
Perri Elastime looks surprised.
Perri Elastime: They who showed.
Fennimore (surprised): You were expecting Perri as well?
Rael Octavius: You have been a subject of a lot of discussions, Perri.
Claricia Robert: The bladesinger come to train with King Ran has been a matter of speculation for quite a while.
Perri Elastime: Courts have their rumor mills.
Claricia Robert: That thay do.
Claricia Robert smiles at Rael.
Rael Octavius blushes.
Perri Elastime raises eyebrows.
Perri Elastime: Rael?
Fennimore attempts to intercede.
Rael Octavius: Some confidences, please?
Fennimore: So how have you been Miss Claricia? Any trouble in this part of town?
Claricia Robert: No troubles. Business as usual.
Perri Elastime drinks some beer.
Claricia Robert: I heard there was a lockdown at the castle. That must have been exciting, Rael.
Rael Octavius: Too much so.
Fennimore: News does travel fast.
Rael Octavius: Rumor mill I believe Perri called it.
Rael Octavius takes a gulp of his ale.
Fennimore (smiling): Seems you're not Miss Claricia's only informant.
Rael Octavius frowns.
Claricia Robert: So you just stopped by for a drink then?
Perri Elastime (stage whispers): Are they flirting?
Claricia Robert: Always.
Fennimore (whispering to Perri Elastime): I think he's one of her regular guests.
Rael Octavius makes no reaction whatsoever.
Perri Elastime (whispering to Fennimore): He seems embarrassed by it.
Fennimore (whispering to Perri Elastime): He was here frequently while I ran errands for Miss Claricia.
Fennimore (whispering to Perri Elastime): Not the best look for a member of the King's Court, to be seen here.
Rael Octavius: Alright, you two. Whatever you are thinking, it stays in these walls.
Fennimore (whispering to Perri Elastime): Of course, he's not her only courtly customer either.
Fennimore: You're right, Rael. What happens in The Rogue Spoon stays in the Spoon.
Rael Octavius: Thank you.
Claricia Robert smiles.
Perri Elastime: Sure, Rael.
Perri Elastime: Um... Are all parties involved are willing? Right?
A cute girl comes out into the bar area and notices Rael sitting with Claricia. She smiles and waves, then disappears into a room behind the bar.
Claricia Robert: This is true.
Rael Octavius smiles back at the girl.
Fennimore nudges Rael.
Fennimore: Looks like you have an admirer. Do you need a moment to say...hello?
Perri Elastime: I think his brain went to South Town.
Rael Octavius: I'm...half human.
Fennimore: Which half?
Rael Octavius (laughs): Apparently the correct half.
Perri Elastime chuckles.
Rael Octavius: It actually isn't anything to be embarrassed about.
Fennimore: No, I may only be a halfling, but I still know what goes on in the minds of half-men.
Perri Elastime: Then why are you acting all funny.
Rael Octavius: It was a secret.
Rael Octavius: I have trouble letting go of secrets.
Perri Elastime: From whom?
Rael Octavius: Almost everyone except Claricia, Felicia, and Abigail.
Fennimore: Abigail? That would be the cutie who just waved at you?
Rael Octavius: Yes she would.
Perri Elastime: And anyone who sees you here. One person secret, two people secret, three people no secret.
Rael Octavius: Something like that. Some would find it an indiscretion, unfortunately.
Perri Elastime: Well, go say hi. Fennimore and I can always eat. There is food?
Claricia Robert: Certainly.
Claricia Robert motions to Felicia to bring food and more drink.
Claricia Robert: And I have other customers to attend to if you will excuse me.
Claricia Robert gets up and starts to make her way to another table.
Fennimore: By all means. It was wonderful to see you again.
Perri Elastime: Nice meeting you.
Claricia Robert: Oh, by the way, have you seen Eris or Arncoril lately? I'm still holding their King's Favor.
Fennimore (surprised): I haven't seen them in over a week.
Fennimore: I've tried to avoid that bard they were hanging around with. He was a troublesome fellow.
Claricia Robert: Majestic? Not a fan?
Rael Octavius shakes his head.
Fennimore: Can't say that I am. I'm still dealing with the repercussions of his ill-timed affair on Balista Street.
Perri Elastime: The Troublesome Troubadour.
Perri Elastime: That's a great name.
Fennimore: I like that and you haven't even met him.
Rael Octavius: That was messy, but he as gathered a group together. They call themselves The Iris.
Perri Elastime: I know isn't that funny.
Fennimore: The Iris? That's a strange name.
Perri Elastime: It is like they are saying I'm watching you.
Fennimore: What do they think they are, the all-seeing-eyeballs?
Perri Elastime rolls her eyes and laughs.
Rael Octavius: The hobgoblin that joined them came up with the name. Apparently leaving an iris is taken to be sending a message--to Forget-Me-Not in this case.
Fennimore joins in Perri's laughter.
Fennimore: Ooooooh.
Fennimore: So they mean to cross paths with her?
Rael Octavius: I suggested they have a name for their group when they had an audience with King Ran.
Rael Octavius: I won't do that again.
Fennimore: Now Rael, I would love to hear more but you need to run along and not keep your lady friend waiting any longer.
Perri Elastime: Are you going to see your little sweet pea?
Rael Octavius: Apparently they got a big reward for setting some kind of trap for Forget-Me-Not.
Perri Elastime nudges Fennimore.
Perri Elastime: He's ignoring us.
Abigail comes out of the backroom and makes eye contact with Rael.
Fennimore nudges Rael.
Rael Octavius: Ok, Ok. I'm going.
Fennimore: Good, she's getting impatient.
Rael Octavius gets up and follows Abigail down the hall.
Perri Elastime laughs again.
Fennimore: As long as we're on the topic, I've been meaning to talk to you about Forget-Me-Not.
Perri Elastime: Okay. What is on your mind?
Fennimore: Have I told you the full story of what transpired between us?
Fennimore: There are parts I left out for Rael's benefit. The less he knows the better.
Perri Elastime: He is a little uptight about things.
Fennimore: You seem to have a keen ear for courtly intrigue. This is about as close as I like to get.
Perri Elastime: Court is court but not life.
Perri Elastime: I have been thinking. Do you think you could teach me to be sneakier?
Fennimore: Sneakier? I love to sneak about.
Fennimore: Well, it started here, a few days before the darkdays. The Troublesome Troubador came in talking a big game about recovering a family heirloom for his mistress.
Fennimore: A bunch of us took him up on his offer of reward but the whole thing went sideways. Innocent people died and the heirloom was stolen by Forget-Me-Not before we ever got there.
Perri Elastime: Not good people dying?
Perri Elastime: That amulet right?
Fennimore: That's the one. So, I hightailed it out of there but Forget-Me-Not wouldn't let me leave so easily. She corralled me with a warning she would cause me trouble.
Fennimore: Next thing I know, I'm on The Knives hit list too.
Perri Elastime: It would be nice to get The Knives to leave us alone.
Fennimore: This multisided love triangle turned into a tangled web.
Perri Elastime: Wait, I missed something. A love triangle? What love triangle?
Fennimore: Well, when Forget-Me-Not caught me fighting off The Knives, she offered a truce and I asked for her help in getting some revenge on the Troubador.
Fennimore: Um, between Astrid and the bard and Forget-Me-Not and the amulet and Rael somehow I'm stuck in the middle.
Perri Elastime: Make him look bad or something?
Perri Elastime: You must have a different definition of love.
Fennimore: Yeah, something like that. I got wind he was laying a trap for her and I was able to warn her in time.
Fennimore: Haha.
Perri Elastime: Rael is not the sneaky sort. It would be beneath his honor.
Fennimore: I think you're right about that, though he does seem to have his secrets.
Fennimore: The Troublesome Troubador enlisted his friends to go to the King for help in retrieving the amulet.
Fennimore: And that's where you came in.
Perri Elastime: Okay, I think I understand.
Fennimore: Surprise! The Troubador's trap went sideways again and you and I got caught in it.
Perri Elastime: I would stay away from this Troublesome Troubadour if we can.
Fennimore: Now, I didn't know the amulet of the planes was the family heirloom that the King was expecting but Forget-Me-Not was feeding me hints that we shouldn't talk about it.
Fennimore: I can't believe I walked in and out of court carrying it.
Perri Elastime: Scary!
Fennimore: Then Rael discovered I had it.
Perri Elastime: That was unfortunate.
Perri Elastime: Boy, he wanted to do the right thing so badly.
Fennimore: Okay, to wrap up this long story before Rael finishes his tryst, I was trying to forge an alliance with Forget-Me-Not.
Fennimore: Now that she has both amulets, who knows if I'll ever hear from her again.
Perri Elastime: I thought he was going to have a brainstorm.
Fennimore: I'm just hoping that neither she nor that bard causes me any more trouble.
Fennimore: Yeah, Rael was pretty freaked, wasn't he.
Perri Elastime: Purpose of such an alliance?
Fennimore: She's an amazing thief. Just imagine what kind of sneakiness she could teach us.
Fennimore: She even knows a few magic spells.
Fennimore: I'd much rather be on her good side, than not.
Perri Elastime: I do want to augment my magic with a little bit of sneakiness.
Fennimore: And if such an alliance could net some trouble for the Troublesome Troubador, all the better.
Perri Elastime: Remind me not to get on your bad side.
Fennimore laughs.
Fennimore: I haven't been very successful in getting any revenge on the bard, just yet.
Fennimore: As long as he stays out of my way, I may just forgive him someday for getting me into all this trouble.
Fennimore: Anyway, now you know the whole story and that there are things Rael doesn't need to know about it.
Perri Elastime: Well, if we get powerful enough maybe I can get some revenge on the Winter Court.
Fennimore: Woah, now that's some big league revenge.
Perri Elastime: Yep! Torturing a child is pretty despicable.
Fennimore: Oh my, torturing a child? You?
Perri Elastime: Me.
Perri Elastime: I'm a survivor but I would like to free some of the others that are there.
Fennimore: Oh my dear, you are much too sweet for that. I pledge this rogue's rapier to aid you in your vengeance.
Fennimore: There are others?
Perri Elastime: There is a lot to learn before then.
Fennimore: Their hearts must be frozen solid to allow such a thing.
Perri Elastime: The Winter Court steals children from all over and they often kill their toys.
Perri Elastime looks quite upset.
Fennimore: My troubles with this Troubador are quite trivial in comparison. I'm sorry.
Perri Elastime: You are a good halfling.
Perri Elastime takes a deep breath and works to calm herself.
Fennimore: I'm glad you are free of them.
Perri Elastime: Me too.
Fennimore: Now you can hone your skills with the King and we will be ready when the time comes.
Rael Octavius appears down the hall.
Fennimore: Ah, there's the half-man now.
Perri Elastime: I will be ready when the time comes.
Rael Octavius approaches the table, smiling.
Rael Octavius: Thanks, you two.
Perri Elastime: No worries.
Fennimore: I hope you enjoyed yourself.
Rael Octavius winks.
Rael Octavius: Ready to head back to the castle. Training day tomorrow.
Fennimore: Yes, we've enjoyed Miss Claricia's hospitality but it is time to return to the castle.
Perri Elastime: We can settle up the tab.
Rael Octavius: I got it already.
Fennimore: Very generous of you, Rael.
Rael Octavius: It is the least I could do.
Perri Elastime: Thanks, very much.

Nonotina 21st, Year One of the Reign of High King Ran

The trio relaxes in The Fiery Stag after their time in court. The inn has cleared out after those who took refuge during the darkday returned to their regular daylight lives.
Rael Octavius: What did you think of court? Kind of overwhelming? I slept for a day after my first time.
Perri Elastime: Wow, meeting the King was kind of exciting.
Fennimore: Sleeping for a day sounds like a great idea as long as I don't miss any meals.
Perri Elastime: I can't sleep that long. I have training tomorrow, but I still need a job.
Rael Octavius: All the moons aligned today. All the royals were there. That doesn't happen very often.
Perri Elastime: I wonder why?
Fennimore: The King is rather intimidating. I hardly noticed the Queen, Prince, or the rest of the Court.
Rael Octavius: He is the High King for a reason.
Perri Elastime: The court was interesting. It seemed like a lot of gossip with teeth.
Fennimore: I'm just glad to be back at the Stag.
Perri Elastime: Me too.
Rael Octavius: The Summer Court must be pretty interesting.
Rael Octavius: I had a conversation with Saemul the Court Wizard.
Perri Elastime: Lots of gossip and maneuvering for favors.
Perri Elastime: Spys and sneaks and liars abound.
Fennimore: Oh, my.
Rael Octavius: Sounds familiar.
Perri Elastime chuckles.
Fennimore glances at her, reddening slightly.
Rael Octavius: King Ran has a measure of magical control over that.
Perri Elastime: Were you saying something about the court wizard?
Rael Octavius: Most of us are under a geas of some fashion or another.
Fennimore: Sounds uncomfortable.
Perri Elastime: No free will?
Rael Octavius: Only if you can't control your tongue.
Rael Octavius: It is never forced. There is always an agreement. It is just a safeguard.
Fennimore: Well, I know how to keep a secret.
Rael Octavius: I spared the two of you from that kind of thing.
Fennimore: I owe you a thank you then.
Perri Elastime: Hmmm...guess it would cut down the number of bloody duels in the throne room.
Rael Octavius: Yes, that is much of the intent. I also had my geas modified so I could impart some information to you.
Perri Elastime: Thanks from me too.
Fennimore (hesitantly): Oh.
Rael Octavius: Let's go up to my father's private table and talk.
Fennimore (even more hesitantly): Okay
Perri Elastime: Okay.
Rael Octavius leads you into a raised area with a railing dividing it from the rest of the bar.
Perri Elastime catches Mindartis' eye and motions for another round for ale.
This area has its own fireplace and a table with several chairs around it. One notable feature is the taxidermied grizzly bear in one corner of the room.
Rael Octavius: Have a seat.
Perri Elastime: I wouldn't want to meet that unexpectedly.
Perri Elastime nods at the bear.
Fennimore takes a chair.
Rael Octavius: That creature introduced my parents to each other in a manner of speaking.
Fennimore: How romantic.
Perri Elastime sits down.
Rael Octavius: The story is quite frightening. Mention of the bear was what kept me in line when I was younger.
Perri Elastime covertly looks around to see who is taking note of them.
Mindartis arrives with a round of ales.
Perri Elastime: It seems quite dead now.
Fennimore: Let's hope it stays that way.
Mindartis: It will liven up in a few hours.
Perri Elastime: Thank you.
Perri Elastime looks surprised.
Mindartis (smiling): You are welcome, my dear.
Fennimore: Sorry, Mindartis, we were discussing the bear.
Perri Elastime pays for the ale.
Fennimore: Thank you, Perri.
Mindartis returns to the bar after receiving the coins from Perri.
Perri Elastime: You're welcome
Fennimore: Rael, do you know if Perri's tutelage comes with a stipend?
Rael Octavius: I imagine it does. Enough to live comfortably during the training, at the very least.
Perri Elastime: Really?
Rael Octavius: Martial training doesn't go very well if you are exhausted and starving.
Perri Elastime: Well you know me, always hungry.
Fennimore: You're just a thin whisp. How can you always be hungry?
Rael Octavius: I'm sure the Lord High Chamberlain will have something arranged for you tomorrow.
Perri Elastime: I can eat you under the table. I don't know why it never sticks.
Rael Octavius: So, my conversation with Saemul.
Perri Elastime looks attentive.
Fennimore looks concerned.
Rael Octavius: Since you, Fennimore, were originally involved with the Germanus heirloom thing, I wanted to be able to tell you something about what was going on, but not if it was going to kill me. The geas, you see, has consequences.
Fennimore (uncomfortably): I see.
Perri Elastime: Killing consequences?
Forget-Me-Not (to Fennimore): Listen closely.
Perri Elastime looks shocked.
Fennimore (projecting his thoughts): Can you hear my thoughts too?
Rael Octavius: I had the wizard modify the geas so I could speak to you, both of you about it...within limits anyway.
Forget-Me-Not (to Fennimore): If I let you, which I am.
Fennimore (to Forget-Me-Not): Can you get your property out of my bag without them noticing?
Forget-Me-Not (to Fennimore): You still have it?
Perri Elastime: If the crown is going to kill you, I'd really rather have the bodies on poles outside the castle so you know it is a possibility. This geas seems sneaky.
Fennimore (to Forget-Me-Not): Last I checked unless you took it back already.
Fennimore (to Forget-Me-Not): I'm afraid of where Rael is heading and Perri doesn't know to keep quiet about it.
Rael Octavius: King Ran has certain people working for him that he must tolerate to remain in power.
Perri Elastime looks around again.
Fennimore: Like Saemul, for example?
Perri Elastime drinks some ale.
Forget-Me-Not (to Fennimore): We can't have Rael discovering you have had it and he is really hard to deceive.
Rael Octavius: Among others.
Fennimore (to Forget-Me-Not): I thought as much.
Fennimore (to Forget-Me-Not): Maybe a diversion then?
Rael Octavius: The chamberlain is a piece of work as well.
Forget-Me-Not (to Fennimore): Make it good.
Fennimore: Yes, he seemed to have trouble walking with that pike up his butt.
Rael Octavius snickers.
Rael Octavius: Rumors have it that he had a local artist assassinated because he sculpted a mocking statue of "him."
Rael Octavius: Well, part of him.
Fennimore: Remind me not to cross him.
Perri Elastime: That's nasty if it is true.
Rael Octavius: You seem distracted, Fennimore. Are you alright?
Perri Elastime tummy rumbles loudly.
Fennimore: Oh, just exhausted from court. All this talk of backstabbing and deadly geases is upsetting.
Fennimore: I'm just a simple halfling.
Rael Octavius nods.
Fennimore: I really don't want to get involved with any court intrigue.
Rael Octavius (laughs): You are in a bit of close proximity to me for that to happen.
Perri Elastime: Well, I'm going to be spending a bit of time at the castle. I'd like to know who to watch out for and who to be wary of.
Rael Octavius: Keep your distance from the High Lords...all of them, for starters.
Perri Elastime: I might even get to hit the King with a sword. That'd be grand.
Fennimore: I'd be careful there too.
Rael Octavius: I guess.
Perri Elastime: Got it no High Lords.
Rael Octavius: So, this heirloom.
Fennimore: You know, I'm trying to keep my distance from that debacle.
Fennimore: Shouldn't you really be talking to Majestic?
Rael Octavius: I was with him through the latest operation. It went successfully. Forget-Me-Not got the medallion. This amulet, which is the heirloom in question, should be sliding its way into the castle by now.
Rael Octavius: Maybe that is why court was full today?
Forget-Me-Not (to Fennimore): Are you sure you still have it?
Fennimore spills his ale on himself.
Fennimore: Oh my, what a mess.
Perri Elastime: Everyone wants to see the heirloom?
Perri Elastime: That doesn't make much sense.
Rael Octavius: Woa!
Rael Octavius: Fennimore!
Rael Octavius stands up and takes up his staff.
Fennimore: Will you excuse me for a moment? I need to clean up. I'll be right back.
Perri Elastime: Hey, Fenn.
Rael Octavius: No, Fennimore! Behind you!
Fennimore: Behind me? What? Where?
Forget-Me-Not (to Fennimore): Shit!
Fennimore jumps up and stumbles back towards Rael.
The air somewhere behind Fennimore collapses with a pop.
Perri Elastime: Perri jumps up, hand to her blade.
Fennimore wobbles weakly.
Fennimore: Oh, I don't feel so good.
Rael Octavius: Something opened your pack and pulled out something on a chain.
Perri Elastime identifies that the pop was a dimension door or misty step or some other kind of teleportation.
The back door of the tavern opens and then slams shut.
Perri Elastime: I think someone just traveled nearby. Like how I got here.
Perri Elastime: Fenn are you hurt?
Fennimore dramatically moans and clutches his stomach.
Fennimore (weakly): The ale. I think it was bad.
Perri Elastime looks for signs of poison.
Perri Elastime sees a forget-me-not on Fennimore's chair seat.
Rael Octavius: What's that, Fennimore?
Perri quickly picks up a forget-me-not from Fennimore's chair.
Fennimore tries to induce himself to vomit.
Fennimore vomits.
Fennimore (sickly): Ugg.
Perri Elastime: Court must really be overwhelming for him.
Rael Octavius: Ewww.
Rael Octavius casts prestidigitation and cleans up the mess before it causes him to vomit as well.
Perri Elastime: Neat trick that.
Fennimore (sickly): Maybe we should continue this tomorrow. I need my rest.
Perri Elastime: I'll help you up to your room.
Fennimore (sickly): Thank you, Perri.
Rael Octavius: Hold it right there!
Rael Octavius: What's going on here?
Rael Octavius: That was Forget-Me-Not.
Rael Octavius (pointing at the flower in Perri's hand): That's her calling card.
Perri Elastime: Fennimore doesn't feel very well! Can't you see he's sick.
Rael Octavius: He made himself do that.
Rael Octavius: Was that the amulet on that chain?
Perri Elastime: What?
Rael Octavius: You can cut the act, Fennimore. I am on to you.
Fennimore coughs to clear his throat.
Fennimore: After our first mishap, I tried to disentangle myself from that bard.
Rael Octavius looks stern.
Fennimore: But, Forget-me-not tracked me down and warned me she would cause me more trouble.
Perri Elastime looks bewildered.
Rael Octavius: Mission accomplished.
Rael Octavius: What have you gotten yourself into? It's a good thing you have that letter from the King.
Fennimore: I don't know and I don't want to know.
Fennimore: She and that bard seem to want the same prize and I want nothing to do with it.
Rael Octavius: Wait. If that was the amulet, how do you still have it? It should have gotten back to the King under its own volition.
Rael Octavius: You brought it right into his presence and there was no notice of it.
Fennimore: It was probably a fake.
Rael Octavius: Really? Forget-Me-Not doesn't go after fakes. She planted it on you, didn't she.
Fennimore: Maybe she knew I was going to court again and wanted me to get caught with it.
Fennimore (meekly): Yes.
Rael Octavius looks at Perri.
Rael Octavius: Did you know about this amulet?
Perri Elastime: I knew of an amulet of the planes that plowed into my tummy.
Rael Octavius looks shocked.
Rael Octavius: How did you know it was an amulet...of...the...planes.
Perri Elastime: It really hurt too.
Rael Octavius winces as if waiting to be struck by lightning.
Perri Elastime: Because I looked at it.
Rael Octavius looks down at himself and then up at the others with relief.
Rael Octavius: You have powerful arcane senses.
Perri Elastime: If I'm going to be sucker-punched by an amulet, I'm definitely going to figure out what it is. Nasty piece of work.
Rael Octavius: What happened when you looked at it?
Perri Elastime: What do you mean what happened? I didn't try to trigger it. I just got here after all.
Fennimore watches Rael and Perri banter back and forth.
Rael Octavius: What do you mean, "Just got here?"
Perri Elastime: I arrived from the Between and met my first friend here, had supper, and went out in the snowstorm to check on a hobbit Lady who also fed me.
Perri Elastime: Speaking of which, I'm hungry.
Perri Elastime: Now untwist your panties while I take a minute and get some food.
Rael Octavius: So, what did you mean by "I didn't try to trigger it?"
Perri Elastime stalks off toward the bar.
Perri Elastime waves back after.
Rael Octavius looks at Fennimore, confused.
Fennimore: Don't look at me, I've told you all that I know.
Perri Elastime finds Mindartis at the bar.
Rael Octavius: So, Forget-Me-Not has the Amulet of the Planes and the Medallion of The Indigo-Sun, free and clear?
Mindartis: What can I do for you, sweety.
Fennimore: I don't know anything about the indigo sun and I'm not even sure the first one is real. After all, we didn't trigger any alarms in the castle and High King Ran himself didn't notice it.
Perri Elastime: I'm terribly hungry; not a bite to eat at court today. And, arguing always makes me famished. That, that man! Better bring some for Fennimore and Rael too. Maybe they can see beyond their eyelashes now.
Rael Octavius: I think she may have negated the recovery spell because she had so recently arrived from another plane.
Mindartis: I'll bring some food up directly, my lady.
Fennimore: Hmm.
Fennimore: Can't say I know anything about spells nor negating them.
Perri Elastime: I'll eat at least two dinners and I need some more ale. please. Thank you.
Mindartis nods with a smile.
Rael Octavius takes his seat at the table again, deep in contemplation.
Fennimore: All I know is this is more trouble that that bard has sent my way, just when I was starting to forgive him.
Perri Elastime: She does a quick circuit of the room and then heads back to the table.
Perri Elastime returns and sits down.
Rael Octavius looks up at Perri as she returns.
Perri Elastime (sighs): I got us some dinner.
Fennimore: Thanks, I'm famished.
Rael Octavius: How do we fix this? Fenn and I have a way out of a death sentence, but you don't, Perri, unless your status as the King's Pupil counts. It might.
Perri Elastime: Me too. Look at us just wasting away to nothing.
Perri Elastime: Fix what?
Fennimore: Death sentence? For what? For being duped again?
Rael Octavius: It's going to look like complicity.
Rael Octavius: I can't ignore what just happened. I'm obligated to report it.
Perri Elastime: What is the problem. I have been on my best behavior since I got here.
Rael Octavius: You disabled the King's trap for Forget-Me-Not. Even inadvertently, there are going to be consequences.
Fennimore: She didn't even know it was the King's trap. For that matter, neither did I.
Perri Elastime: If the King did not make his trap foolproof, he has no one to blame but himself.
Rael Octavius: Of course. How could you have known?
Perri Elastime: Next you're going to tell me he eats babies for breakfast.
Rael Octavius: Absolutely not.
Perri Elastime: It makes about as much sense.
Fennimore: Maybe, if he hadn't gone and gagged you, we might have found out sooner, but it's too late now. There is no point in blaming the King. That's a sure way to be on the wrong end of a pike.
Perri Elastime: Maybe we could look for it after supper.
Perri Elastime: Hey, kings are supposed to plan for fools messing stuff up.
Rael Octavius: This King is human, not some supernatural immortal entity.
Rael Octavius: OK, then. What happened stays in this small space. It does no good to pursue this since you are innocent.
Fennimore: I'm fine with that.
Perri Elastime: So we don't go looking after supper?
Rael Octavius: I think not. Best to just forget about it. Let Majestic figure out how to recover it now.
Fennimore: I should let you know that he's playing both sides. He wants the amulet to return it to Lady Astrid.
Rael Octavius: I figured that out right before their audience with the King. They all have a geas upon them, so they will have to be careful about how they approach their search.
Fennimore: Then, let there be no more talk of this damned amulet, so I can enjoy my dinner.
Perri Elastime: You know if she just said what this heirloom was when I asked this morning. But, no. She had to be all mysterious about it. Like I should bring her any powerful magic item I find in my travels and she will tell me if that is the one.
Rael Octavius raises an eyebrow.
Perri Elastime: Won't say another word about it.
Mindartis arrives with food and more drink.
Fennimore: Now, Perri, what was this challenge to eat me under a table?
Fennimore smiles.
Mindartis looks concerned.
Perri Elastime: I only ordered you one dinner. I ordered me two.
Fennimore: Mindartis, she thinks she can out-eat me. What do you think? Can the kitchen keep up with this ravenous halfling?
Mindartis smiles and turns to leave.
Mindartis: I'll put it on your tab.
Fennimore laughs.
Perri Elastime: I'm afraid my pocketbook will give out before either of us are so stuffed we could roll away.
Fennimore: I have a bit of change. Let's see how long that will last us.
Rael Octavius sets two platinum coins on the table.
Rael Octavius: This should cover it.
Fennimore: You're not going to join us?
Rael Octavius: I'll eat in moderation, thank you very much.
Perri Elastime: Hey, thanks.
Fennimore: Your loss.
Mindartis returns to the table and retrieves the coins.
Mindartis: I'll keep it coming until you tell me to stop.
Perri Elastime: Great!
Fennimore: Dig in.
Perri Elastime starts eating.
Fennimore joins her.
The elf and halfling gorge themselves while the half-elf watches and enjoys the company. The competitive eaters put away a lot of food, but in the end, they stuff themselves, leaving no clear winner but the inn.
Fennimore: Not bad for an elf.
Perri Elastime: I think food powers my magic.
Fennimore: I guess mama liked you for a reason.
Perri Elastime: Not bad for a halfling.
Fennimore: I didn't achieve this stature by fasting.
Perri Elastime: It's a fine physique.
Fennimore pats his overly plump belly.
Fennimore: I agree.
Perri Elastime: Someday, if I eat enough maybe I'll get there.

Nonotina 12th, Year One of the Reign of High King Ran

A she-elf with greenish-blonde hair and bronze skin appears in the street outside The Fiery Stag Inn. She has been tasked with visiting the human king that has been allowed to learn the secrets to elven bladesinging to receive a lesson from him as part of his agreement with the elves.
Several citizens of "The City" are startled by the sudden appearance.
Perri Elastime: By Maeve's hairy toes, that was fast!
Fennimore approaches the elf.
Fennimore: Hello and welcome to "The City!" You look like you are new around here.
Perri Elastime: Just arrived. I'm Perri.
Fennimore: Nice to meet you, I'm Fennimore.
Perri Elastime looks a little rough around the edges. Her hair is in dreds bound with leather with sticks twigs bits of fur and feathers.
Perri Elastime: So this is a human city? The City?
Fennimore: Mostly human, though I'm not.
Fennimore pats the ample girth of his large belly.
Perri Elastime [Halfling]: Sir Fennimore, it is wonderful to meet you!
Fennimore listens for sounds emanating from the Fiery Stag, trying to determine whether his previous companions have returned.
Perri Elastime [Halfling]: You must know a good place to eat.
Fennimore [Halfling]: You are a learned elf. So few know our language.
Fennimore thinks he sees Magic and company heading north a couple of blocks over.
Perri Elastime [Halfling]: I met a few halflings. Their expertise in growing is renowned in the Between.
Fennimore [Halfling]: I know several good places to eat. We are standing beside a decent enough place now, or at least it can be depending upon the evening's entertainment.
Fennimore [Halfling]: The Between? I don't think I've heard of that.
Perri Elastime [Halfling]: If they have wine too? Sounds perfect.
Fennimore [Halfling]: Let's go in and you can tell me more.
Perri Elastime [Halfling]: I moved Between as a small child and had the experience of seeing the mushroom forest and the Seelie Court.
Fennimore [Halfling]: Mushroom forest? Sounds delicious.
Perri Elastime [Halfling]: Best not to eat there mostly.
Perri Elastime heads into the inn
Fennimore moves to the door of the Fiery Stag and holds it open for Perri.
Fennimore [Halfling]: Pity, all those mushrooms and none for the eating?
As he turns to the inn, Fennimore notices his note to Forget-Me-Not is gone and there is a scorch mark where it was.
Fennimore stifles a smile.
Perri Elastime bows slightly and enters.
Perri Elastime pauses in the doorway trying to take in everything.
Fennimore finds an empty table and calls to Mindartis.
Fennimore: Mindartis, we have a new friend in town and she is famished. Could you be so kind as to bring us a proper meal with your best wine?
You enter a large bar area with many tables and fireplaces. Behind the bar is the ugliest blue-haired, bronze-skinned elf you have ever seen.
Perri Elastime follows Fennimore making note of any exits or lines of attack.
Mindartis: Hello, Fennimore. Who is this fey beauty?
Perri Elastime: Perri Elastime, good sir.
Fennimore: We've only just met. She calls herself Perri.
Mindartis [Elvish]: Pleased to me you, my lady.
Mindartis moved out from behind the bar.
Perri Elastime [Elvish]: Pleased to meet you, as well.
Mindartis reaches for Perri's hand.
Perri Elastime: As Fennimore noted, I have a terrible empty ache in my belly.
Perri Elastime looks nervous and turns slightly while letting him take her hand.
Mindartis gently takes her hand and kisses it, then releases it and nods.
Fennimore stiffens as he notices Perri's unease.
Mindartis [Elvish]: I will bring you food and wine.
Perri Elastime looks relieved when it is simple politeness and relaxes a bit.
Mindartis: Apologies, food and wine, as you wish.
Mindartis makes his way back behind the bar and disappears into the back room, which is presumably the kitchen.
Perri Elastime [Elvish]: Thank you!
Mindartis [Elvish]: You are most welcome.
Perri Elastime [Halfling]: You never know if it is a kiss or a bite to expect.
Fennimore relaxes as the tension eases.
Fennimore: A bite? That would be most unpleasant.
Perri Elastime: Very true that.
Fennimore: Mindartis has been true to me so far. Though, I've only recently made his acquaintance.
Fennimore: So, what brings you to The City?
Perri Elastime: The Elves tasked me with an errand that involves meeting the King, but I hope to learn the customs and people a bit before that happens.
Perri Elastime: And are you from The City?
Fennimore: I am, all my short life. If you would allow me the pleasure of being your guide, I would love to show you around. It just so happens, I've recently made the King's acquaintance as well. Perhaps, I can find a way for you to receive an audience, as well.
Perri Elastime: It would be wonderful to have a guide? As for the audience, after I have my bearings a bit. I don't want to cause offense by accident.
Perri Elastime: Only intentional rudeness will do.
Fennimore laughs.
Fennimore: Quite understandable. I'm afraid my meeting with the King was quite short and under duress. The City was under attack by a nasty devil.
Perri Elastime: Woah, is that common around here?
Mindartis returns to the table with food, wine, and ale.
Mindartis: Sir, lady, your food and drink.
Mindartis sets a tray on the table with plates of food, a glass of wine, and a mug of ale on it.
Fennimore: We have our fair share of weirdness, but that is the first time in my twenty years in which I have seen a devil. All knives and chains it was too.
Perri Elastime: Smells delicious! Thank you for rescuing me before I wasted away.
Mindartis smiles, nods, and returns to his place behind the bar.
Perri Elastime smiles.
Fennimore: Thank you, Mindartis, and yes, better it goes to our waists than to let any of us waste away.
Perri Elastime: I fear I have insulted the good barkeep. I didn't mean to.
Fennimore: Oh dear.
Perri Elastime pulls off thin leather gloves and her hands are scarred with bites.
Fennimore tries not to stare at her hands.
Perri Elastime: Those with good intentions often don't understand my mistrust.
Fennimore notices more guests arriving.
Fennimore: Seems to be getting busier.
Several folk hastily enter the inn.
Perri Elastime: It does.
Commoner: The sun has left again. Another darkday is upon us.
Perri Elastime moves so she can see both doors.
Fennimore shivers.
Fennimore: A darkday. Some say it is an ill omen.
Perri Elastime: Best fuel up.
Perri Elastime she smiles.
Perri Elastime tucks into the food with relish.
Fennimore nods in agreement and digs into his dinner.
Mindartis (announcing to the bar): Head out to the woodpile in the back and fill the scuttles and room is free as is our custom.
All the windows darken.
Perri Elastime: Room free? Why? How do you make a living?
Fennimore: That's an invitation that is hard to pass up.
Fennimore: I'm sure he will sell plenty of food and drink to lighten peoples hearts.
Mindartis: We receive a stipend from The High King when the sun leaves the sky.
Perri Elastime: Oh.
Mindartis: But, Fennimore has it right. Our food and drink is still to be paid for.
Fennimore (raises a toast): To High King Ran, may his coffers never run dry.
Perri Elastime raises her glass.
Perri Elastime: How much do I owe you.
Fennimore: Please, allow me to buy your first meal in "The City."
The folk who recently entered make their way out the back door and return shortly with armfuls of cut wood for the many fireplaces.
Perri Elastime: Thank you.
Perri Elastime: Perri watches to try and figure out what things cost.
Fennimore: So, tell me more about your travels. That was quite the entrance you made. I've never been outside "The City" and I'm curious about the Between, The Mushroom Forest, The Seelie Court. These are all new to me.
Mindartis: The wine is two gold. It is quite good. The lady's dinner is two silver.
Perri Elastime is surprised by the cost of things.
Fennimore: And mine?
Mindartis: You covered through tomorrow.
Perri Elastime: Between is a wonderful, scary, wild, and dangerous place.
Fennimore counts out the coins from his purse.
Fennimore: Dangerous? I couldn't help but notice your hands.
Perri Elastime: Beauty hides danger and poison often, but there are wonders even there. The chiming trees, for example, glisten and ring with the most enchanting melodies.
Perri Elastime: Fey court is somewhat brutal even for a child.
Fennimore: Sounds amazing. I hope I can visit Between someday.
Perri Elastime: And one must take care not to owe favors there.
Fennimore: Sounds like wise advice for many places.
Perri Elastime: It can be fun. Perhaps when my patron, Sir Panglia, summons me you could travel with me. It is dangerous, but you seem well versed in this world.
Fennimore: If you've finished your meal, let's bring in some wood to stoke the fires and earn your room for the night. Then, perhaps we can begin your tour of "The City."
Fennimore: I would like to check up on my mum; make sure she is safe from the dark.
Perri Elastime looks around at the other patrons evaluating them for danger. She notices a half-elf passed out under a table?
Perri Elastime: May I come with you?
Perri Elastime: Or, would that mean something more here?
Fennimore follows her gaze to the half-elf.
Fennimore: He's a nice enough fellow. Rather loud and boisterous and has an unnatural attraction to dishes and flatware.
Perri Elastime: It's best he's out of commission for a while then.
Perri Elastime finishes with her meal and replaces her gloves.
Fennimore: I'm sorry, I did not mean anything untoward. Among little people, meeting the family is a common occurrence. We are a quiet but welcoming folk.
Perri Elastime: Among elves, the meeting of family is a natural, ready occurrence. In my home, everyone knows everyone else, so newcomers are often overwhelmed by attention.
Fennimore: Sounds familiar.
Fennimore smiles softly.
Fennimore pushes back from the table, stretches and goes outside to gather some wood for the fires.
Perri Elastime pulls a fur cloak out of her bag and wraps it around her shoulders and a fur cap of blue opossum, which she places on her head.
Perri Elastime follows Fennimore.
The pair exit out the back door into the alley between the inn and the tenements.
Perri Elastime gathers an armload of wood.
Fennimore gathers a small armful and struggles to lift it.
As Fennimore is collecting wood, there is a tug on his pack.
Fennimore: Hello, who's that?
Perri Elastime looks around.
Fennimore's pack keeps feeling like it's being tugged on, but there is no one around with hands available to be doing so.
Fennimore drops his load of wood.
Perri Elastime drops her wood.
Fennimore's pack seems to be twitching back and forth of its own accord.
Fennimore: Something has gotten into my pack.
Perri Elastime draws her short sword.
Neither of the pair see anyone in the alley attempting to hide or otherwise.
Perri Elastime: Anything missing?
Fennimore: Let's check. Keep your sword ready.
The pack jerks more violently.
Fennimore doffs his pack and carefully opens the flap.
Perri Elastime gets ready to stab.
An amulet leaps from the pack and lands on the ground at Fennimore's feet.
Fennimore: Curious, I wonder where that came from?
Perri Elastime: That yours?
It begins to skitter along the ground away from you.
Fennimore: Hey, come back here.
Perri Elastime stabs through the chain.
Fennimore tries to step on the chain to restrain it.
Perri's shortsword stabs into the ground inside the chain near the amulet as Fennimore steps on the extended chain. The amulet wiggles frantically, but goes no farther.
Fennimore looks closely at it trying to identify it.
If Fennimore didn't know better, he would guess this is the king's missing artifact.
Perri Elastime (whispering): An amulet of the planes.
Fennimore: Really? I hear there is one of those floating around the city right now.
Perri Elastime (whispering): Where did you get such a treasure?
Perri Elastime: Shall I pick it up?
Fennimore: I know of a person who is rumored to have such a thing. But, why would she leave it in my pack and where might it be going all on its own?
Fennimore: Wait, do you have a bit of rope. Let's make sure it doesn't get away again.
Perri Elastime: How about one of these?
Perri Elastime takes a strong leather thong from a dreadlock.
Fennimore: That should do. Loop it through the center hole.
Snow begins to fall.
Perri Elastime uses the sword to lift an edge and threads it through the hole without touching the amulet itself.
Perri threads the thong through the hole without touching amulet herself.
Perri Elastime knots the thong.
Fennimore: That should do.
Fennimore picks up the amulet by the chain, holding it away from himself.
You stand in the alley, Fennimore holding the amulet by the chain and Perri by the leather thong. It continues to wiggle frantically.
Perri Elastime moves closer so it can swing free.
As you struggle to keep control of the amulet without it touching either of you, it tries more and more violently to escape. It pulls free from Fennimore's grasp and thuds solidly into Perri's abdomen.
Light flares, dazzling Fennimore. Perri feels like she loses her footing and begins to fall. She sees a myriad of images of worlds and landscapes, beautiful and horrifying, flash before her eyes. The vision quickly passes and she finds herself standing in the alley again facing Fennimore. The amulet falls to the ground and remains motionless.
Perri Elastime grabs the amulet from the ground.
Perri Elastime: That hurt, you rabid ogre's ass biter!
Perri Elastime shakes the amulet.
Whatever magic was animating the amulet seems to have been dispelled.
Fennimore: It seems to have stopped whatever it was doing.
Perri Elastime offers the amulet to Fennimore.
Fennimore: Thanks.
Perri Elastime feels oddly disconnected from the Feywild at the moment.
Fennimore: I wonder where it was going?
Perri Elastime: I think we should get moving. I don't feel so good at the moment.
Fennimore: You've had a busy day. Do you need to rest?
Fennimore: Or do you need a healer?
Perri Elastime: No, I just feel like I'm wrapped in spider silk. My magic is muffled.
Fennimore: You have magic?
Perri Elastime: Yes, I am a wizard.
Fennimore: How wonderful. King Ran will love to meet you. He is a powerful wizard.
Perri Elastime: Yes, powerful wizards can be fearsome.
Fennimore: I never developed a talent for magic. My skills run in a different direction. I like to watch the city, listen for noises, and run down rumors.
Perri Elastime: I tend to watch out of paranoia, but I love learning new things.
Fennimore: Excellent.
Perri Elastime: It's getting cold. We should check on your Mum then maybe we can investigate where this amulet was going.
Fennimore tentatively puts the chain of the amulet around his neck
Fennimore: Good idea.
Fennimore: Let's bring the wood in so no one trips over it in the dark and then we can get going.
Perri Elastime: Maybe in a belt pouch would be better. I would not want you to lose your head if it gets going again.
Fennimore: You're right. It was quite strong.
Perri Elastime sheaths her sword.
Fennimore removes the amulet from his neck and tucks it into a pouch and ties the pouch firmly closed.
Perri Elastime: Maybe tie the thong around your belt.
Fennimore: Yes, twice safe.
Perri Elastime starts picking up wood.
Fennimore finishes securing the amulet and then joins Perri in picking up wood.
You enter the inn with the wood and carry it over to one of the scuttles. Mindartis smiles and nods once you have deposited the wood.
Perri Elastime gives him a little curtsey in reply.
Mindartis winks.
Fennimore: That was a fine meal, Mindartis. We are off for a bit, but will return later. Please hold a room for Ms. Perri.
Perri Elastime: Shall we go?
Mindartis: Will do. Be safe out there. Cold isn't the only danger when the sun is away.
Fennimore: Thanks for the warning.
Perri Elastime pats her sword.
Fennimore: We may be safer on the main roads. Even though fewer people will be out after dark.
The pair leave the inn and head towards Fennimore's mum's.
Perri Elastime: I'll follow you.
Fennimore: It's a bit longer, but if we want to avoid darker alleys, our best path may be northwest towards the Temple of the Father and Mother, then turning southwest towards the Bards' College until we get close to the river, then we can take a side street to mum's marketplace.
Perri Elastime: Sounds reasonable to me. Point out the landmarks as we go please.
Fennimore draws on the depths of his knowledge as a street waif to point out as many interesting places and tales as he can fit into the walk.
Fennimore: First, we are at the Fiery Stag Inn, accompanied by the board where the King's Herald posts messages.
The two of you travel the main roads until you begin to get near your destination and the buildings become more sparse. You are passing one of the many wells in this area when a small winged critter comes flying out of it.
Oh, tasties.
The mephit approaches taking a big gulp of air and exhales an icy blast at the pair.
Fennimore, too busy regaling Perri with stories, drops his guard and is caught unaware by the mephit.
The mephit then flies away.
Perri's firebolt slams into the creature and it goes whirling through the air and falls to the ground.
Fennimore: Well, you're handy to have around.
Perri Elastime: If there is one, there may be more.
Fennimore: Agreed.
Perri Elastime looks around.
There seems to be no other threats. However, the mephit appears to still be breathing, only knocked out for the moment.
Fennimore runs up to the downed creature and stabs it with his rapier.
Stephen: The ice mephit crumbles into small chunks of ice.
Perri Elastime: Nice jab!
Fennimore: It's easier when they are immobile.
Perri Elastime (laughing): I've noticed that.
Perri Elastime moves up to Fennimore.
Having no other threats, the pair continues the rest of the way to Fennimore's mums.
You arrive at a small hobbit-hole, a light in the window welcomes you.
Fennimore opens the door and calls out.
Fennimore: Ma, I'm home. I brought a friend.
A small hobbit woman sits in a chair near the lit fireplace stitching.
Flora: Fennimore! Come here, my boy.
Flora stands up and approaches.
Flora: A friend, you say?
Perri Elastime: Good afternoon, ma'am.
Flora: I dare say evening, but you are an elf, so you aren't burdened by the darkness.
Fennimore: Yes, Mum. Perri, please meet my mum, Flora. Ma, this is Perri. She's only just arrived in "The City."
Flora: You have found your way to a good city, child. The king has been good to us all.
Perri Elastime: That's good. Those with power can make or break a place.
Flora: So, Fenn, where have you been?
Fennimore: Oh, here and there. You know how it is. I'm staying at the Fiery Stag now. Looking for work, staying out of trouble.
Fennimore smiles, hoping his mother doesn't worry about his employment opportunities.
Flora: Oh, really? No trouble?
Perri Elastime smiles.
Fennimore: Well, trying to anyway.
Flora: Thought so. Well, you're safe right now, so it's all good.
Fennimore: There was this bard, you know. He was like a walking thistle patch making trouble wherever he went. I got out of his way as quickly as I could.
Flora: Bards! What a bother. They can cause such a racket.
Fennimore: You can say that again.
Fennimore smiles more broadly.
Fennimore: I'm glad to see you're safe too.
Flora: You must be hungry after being out in the cold coming all the way from the Stag.
Perri Elastime: Fennimore has been telling me about the city. He is quite a good storyteller.
Perri Elastime: I could always eat a bit. Can I fetch some wood for you?
Flora: Oh, that would be sweet. Thank you.
Perri Elastime fetches an armload of wood, making a few trips as she is not very strong.
Flora: Oh, that is plenty of wood, sweetie. Thank you.
Fennimore helps his mum set out a supper for the three of them.
Fennimore: While she isn't looking, he slips a few coins into a cupboard where he knows his ma will find them later.

Nonotina 11th, Year One of the Reign of High King Ran

Fennimore stands in the square outside the von Rumm estate facing the statue of The High King.
Fennimore looks around thinking about the events of the last few hours, watching the big folk surge through the square.
Fennimore (softly to himself): Well, you've bollocks this up, Fenn. Time to try to straighten things out.
Fennimore (softly to himself): First, things first. I need some new friends.
Fennimore sets off in search of a stationery shop, looking for one that specializes in paper with flowery imprints or one that might make a small run for a few coins.
Fennimore wanders around the stands and the shops in and around this square but finds nothing like a stationary maker among them.
Fennimore: Hmm, not very productive shopping, let's try another avenue.
Fennimore heads over to The Fiery Stag.
Fennimore makes his way through the streets, through the square that is dominated on the southeast by The Temple of The Father and Mother.
He takes the avenue on the north side of the temple heading toward the city's cemetery. Just before the street opens into the vast graveyard, he sees a luminary establishment.
Fennimore: This might do.
Fennimore steps into the Luminary's shop.
Fennimore: Hello?
Printer: Hello, master halfling. How may I help you today?
Fennimore: I'm looking to purchase some paper to correspond with my mother.
Fennimore: She has a special love for flowers. I was hoping you might have something appropriate for her.
Printer: Flowered stationery? How interesting.
Fennimore: Do you keep any stock, or would it need to be a new run?
Printer: It would be a new run most likely unless you want lotus or myosotis.
Fennimore: Hmm, No, sorry that doesn't sound like my mum. Let me think.
Printer: Certainly, take your time.
Fennimore: Roses, no. Violets, no. Daisies...maybe? Forget-me-nots, hmm, she likes those a lot.
Fennimore: Do you think you could draw a forget-me-not?
Printer: That is the common name for myosotis, so you are in luck.
Fennimore: Really, I had no idea!
Fennimore: Must be my lucky day.
Printer smiles.
Printer: How many sheets would you like?
Fennimore: How about if I start with 20. Now that I've found you, I can come back for more when I need them.
Printer: Oh, as parchment, paper, or vellum?
Fennimore: Oh dear, I'm afraid I don't know much about printing.
Printer: Parchment is lower quality, vellum is high quality, paper being in the middle somewhere.
Fennimore: What can I get for a gold piece?
Printer: Ten parchment or five paper.
Fennimore: Okay, here's 2 gold. I'll take 10 sheets of paper.
Printer: Very good, sir. I'll put that together for you.
Fennimore: Thank you, she'll be so happy.
The printer gets busy putting together Fennimore's order. After a few minutes, he hands the halfling a parchment folio with the paper within.
Printer: You have quills and ink I presume?
Fennimore: Now that you mention it, I could use both.
Printer: I will throw a quill in for free with a purchase of ink, ten gold per ounce.
Fennimore counts out twelve gold from his coin purse.
Printer (smiling): Thank you, sir, for the business.
Fennimore: Good doing business with you!
Fennimore: Smiling at his good fortune, Fenn leaves the shop and walks jauntily towards The Fiery Stag.
Fennimore skirts the southwest corner of the cemetery and heads south toward the Stag. He notices that he is being tailed.
Fennimore: Well that puts a damper on the day.
Fennimore looks around for a larger shop and ducks into the first open one he can find.
Fennimore moves quickly to the back of the shop and looks for a rear exit.
Fennimore finds himself in Arturo's Attire, an establishment known for their magical attire.
Attendant: Hello, master halfling. May I interest you in a cloak of invisibility?
Fennimore: That sounds wonderful, but not today I'm afraid. You see, I overheard some ruffians outside. It sounded like they were planning to sack your shop.
Fennimore: Perhaps, you should close up early?
Attendant: Oh, my! Really? Them again, hmm.
Fennimore: I think I'll check outback, make sure none of them are lurking in the alley.
Fennimore: Good luck!
The attendant begins casting wards around several of the more expensive items in the store.
Attendant: Oh, thank you. You do that.
Fennimore slips out the back.
Fennimore looks to see if anyone is in the alley.
Fennimore takes the alley behind the store and passes through the tenement that backs up to The Fiery Stag Inn, entering through the back door between the stage and the bar.
Fennimore takes a seat at the bar where he can try to keep an eye on both doors.
Fennimore: Barkeep?
The tavern area is pretty empty at the moment. Only the bartender Mindartis and another patron sitting at the far end of the bar are here.
Fennimore hears familiar voices approaching the front door and clomping up to the door. There is a muddled, but vociferous debate going on dominated, of course, by Majestic.
Fennimore: Oh, how did they find me here?
Fennimore: How quick can I get a room? I'd rather not meet the guests who are about to arrive?
Mindartis: Here's a key. I will come to find you later. The number is on the tag.
Fennimore: Thank you!
Fennimore: Up the stairs then?
The door begins to open when you are a few feet from the stairs.
Fennimore continues up the stairs and around the corner until he is out of sight of the main floor before stopping to listen to the conversation below.
The halfling manages to slip onto the stairs without the boisterous group noticing as they enter. He quickly and quietly ascends the stairs.
Fennimore: After listening for a bit, Fenn checks the number on his key and continues looking for his room.
As you are listening, you hear that Mindartis is coming up the stairs to retrieve Astrid Germanus-Bjarte.
Mindartis comes around the corner from the stairs and makes for the door at the end of the hall.
Fennimore: Barkeep, a moment, please.
Mindartis: Of course. No hurry really. That bard can't even get my name right.
Fennimore: If you can bring a noon-meal to my room. I've been running all morning and missed my elevenses.
Fennimore: I'm afraid in my rush, I forgot to ask your name?
Mindartis: Mindartis.
Mindartis: Let me fetch Madame Bjarte and then I'll be right back up. You are Fennimore?
Fennimore: That I am.
Fennimore is confused.
Fennimore: How did you know that?
Mindartis: I remember Alsis mentioning you recently. He found you?
Fennimore: He did.
Fennimore: Although it was Rael Octavius who recommended your fine establishment.
Mindartis smiles.
Mindartis: The Octavius' are good for our business.
Fennimore: I think it best I find my room before you finish your errand.
Fennimore smiles back.
Mindartis: It's the next door on the left.
Fennimore: Thank you, Mindartis
Mindartis: You're welcome, Fennimore.
Mindartis continues down the hall.
Fennimore quickly enters his room.
Fennimore: Whew, that was a close call.
Fennimore looks around at his room.
The room is basic and spotlessly clean, with a bed, desk, chair, and dresser.
Fennimore locks the door behind him.
Fennimore goes to the window to pull the drapes or shutters tight.
Fennimore peeks out to see what he can without revealing his presence.
This window looks out over the tenement behind the inn. You catch a glimpse of the one that was following you lurking in the shadows.
Fennimore: I guess I didn't get away as cleanly as I had hoped.
Fennimore: Time for the next step.
Fennimore moves to the desk and withdraws the paper, ink, and quill
Fennimore: On the first sheet, he begins to write...
Fennimore: Now, how to post this to the message board without alerting those buffoons downstairs?
Fennimore: I guess I'm just going to have to wait them out.
The confabulation downstairs is quite loud and there must be other patrons below now as well.
Fennimore gets comfortable on the bed and tries to listen for the voices he can recognize from the crowd below.
Fennimore: Hopefully, Mindartis hasn't forgotten me and can get away from them to bring me lunch. This poor halfling is starving.
He hears Magic, of course, and Tazdar's accent is hard to miss. Eris and Arncoril chatter away as well. Munkustrap and Zani chime in. Rael's calm voice can be heard. Also, Astrid. There are other voices he doesn't recognize that are barely audible.
There is a knock at the door.
Fennimore: Hello?
Mindartis: Your food, mister.
Fennimore rushes to open the door.
Fennimore: Ah, thank you. I'm famished.
Mindartis enters as he unlocks the door and lets him in.
Mindartis: So the recovery didn't go so well?
Fennimore closes the door behind him.
Fennimore: The bard is a walking thistle patch. I get the feeling nothing goes well around him.
Mindartis smiles.
Fennimore hands Mindartis a gold piece.
Fennimore: Do me a favor, I may be stuck here for a while. Can you continue bringing meals up, and let me know when the bard is gone or at least has drunk himself into oblivion?
Mindartis: A second gold and the room, dinner, and breakfast are secured.
Fennimore: The first one is just for you. Will one more cover the other expenses for now?
Mindartis: Oh. A third?
Fennimore: No problem.
Fennimore fetches two more gold from his purse.
Mindartis (smiling): Thank you, lord.
Fennimore: I depend on your discretion.
Fennimore returns the smile
Mindartis: And you have it.
Mindartis: Apparently, they will be leaving for the castle for an audience with High King Ran in an hour or so.
Fennimore: That's good news. I'll wait for the racket to die down.
Fennimore: I'd best let you get back to the bar. It sounds like you have other guests as well.
Mindartis nods and departs.
Fennimore dives into his noon meal with gusto.
Fennimore (prodding his belly): My gosh, I was going to starve if he hadn't arrived when he did.
Fennimore: After he completes his meal, he listens to see if the confabulation below has died down.
On cue after about an hour, much of the ruckus dies down as the group departs for the castle.
Fennimore: That's better.
Fennimore pockets his newly drafted letter and listens cautiously at his door.
There are footsteps of high-heeled shoes passing as you listen.
Fennimore waits for them to pass. Hopefully, hearing a door open and close.
Fennimore's hopes are fulfilled as a door opens and then closes.
Fennimore: As quietly as he can, he opens his door and slips into the hallway.
The halfling slips soundlessly out of the room and down the hall to the top of the stairs. The tavern area is busy with typical patrons. Fennimore does notice Arncoril passed out under the large table in front of the main fireplace.
Fennimore proceeds down the hall, down the stairs, and out the front door, trying to attract as little attention as possible.
Fennimore: Let him sleep it off.
No one takes notice of the halfling as he slips out the front door and over to the billboard.
Fennimore: Belatedly, Fenn thinks, lucky these tacks and hammer are here. I guess I'm not the only one who comes to post a message.
Fennimore finds an empty spot to tack up his message, as high as he can reach.
Fennimore then steps back to read the other messages, searching for anything of interest.
Fennimore: Hmm, An aptitude for finding things... Street smarts? That might keep me busy if my message isn't answered promptly.
Fennimore looks around for any sign of his tail.
Fennimore sees nothing of his tail in the street nearby.
Fennimore looks for a way into the alley between the tenement and The Fiery Stag.
Fennimore moves through the alleys to the tenement and finds signs of his tail having been there in the form of nutshells scatter about. They lead him for a way north where they take him to a quiet street.
He catches sight of his tail in an alley nearby.
However, he seems to have spotted the halfling as well.
Thug: There's the roly-poly.
Fennimore: You looking for me?
Thug: You bet.
Thug: The boss wants to see you.
Fennimore: Oh, who's boss?
Thug: The Tip of the Knives.
Fennimore: Really? I must be moving down in the world to have attracted your attention.
Bandit: I think that was an insult, Hod.
Bandit steps into view.
Thug: You think?
Fennimore: You can take it however you like.
Thug: How about I take it out of your hide?
Fennimore: You're welcome to try, but I don't think your "boss" will like that much.
Thug: Hmm.
Thug hefts his mace and the other draws a scimitar.
Fennimore draws his bow and fires a shot at the bandit, hitting him.
Fennimore moves close to the building and tries to use the clutter for a little cover.
The bandit rushes forward looking around.
Bandit: Where did he go?
The thug moves forward, as well, scanning the area.
Thug: What the heck?
Fennimore fires another arrow at the bandit and hits again.
The bandit drops to the ground, bleeding profusely.
Thug: Ah, ha. There you are.
The thug charges and pummels the halfling with his mace.
Fennimore drops his bow and quickly draws his rapier. He thrust it at the thug and hits.
He then disengages from the thug.
Thug: Come back here!
The thug chases after Fennimore.
Fennimore stabs at the thug as he chases after him and hits.
Thug: Ugh!
The halfling darts away again.
Thug: Argh! Get back here you little bugger!
The thug continues to chase after Fennimore.
Fennimore waits for him again and stabs him again.
He then darts away again to the thug's dismay.
Thug: Oh no you don't. Haha.
The thug runs back between the buildings trying to cut the halfling off.
As the thug exits the alley, he trips and falls on his face.
Fennimore leaps towards the prone thug and strikes.
The thug lies still.
Fennimore searches both bodies.
As you search the thug, you hear a familiar giggle from nearby.
Forget-Me-Not: Oops.
Fennimore: You found me. Did you get my note?
Forget-Me-Not: Note?
Fennimore: Pity, I left a little message for you outside The Fiery Stag. I was hoping for a chat.
Forget-Me-Not: A chat.
Forget-Me-Not: Ok, let's chat.
Fennimore: These are "Knives". Seems I'm making enemies faster than friends. I was hoping we could put our differences behind us for the moment.
Forget-Me-Not: The Knives are no friends of mine either. So, the enemy of my enemy...friend?
Fennimore: Good enough to start. That strange bard has a hard-on for you and the amulet you found. He isn't going to stop until he finds you. He's trying to enlist the help of King Ran.
Forget-Me-Not: I heard that. The king is setting a trap for me, I believe.
Fennimore: That seemed to be the gist of it.
Fennimore: The bard and my previous companions were making quite a ruckus about it at the Stag this afternoon.
Fennimore: If you can't avoid their "trap", I'd be astounded.
Forget-Me-Not: The rumor is that your bard frenemy and the group following him are going to deliver an actual artifact to the mage school.
Fennimore: You are well informed.
Fennimore: I was thinking we could lay a trap for them, to hoist them on their own petard.
Forget-Me-Not: It is an expected move. Kind of amateur for an archmage.
Fennimore: Archmage? King Ran?
Forget-Me-Not: I would like to disappoint them entirely by not showing up at all, but it's an artifact. I really want it.
Fennimore: They have numbers on their side.
Fennimore: We'll need something devious.
Forget-Me-Not: I expect the king wants his amulet of the planes pretty badly.
Forget-Me-Not: I think the trap will land me with something I don't want and lose what I already have.
Fennimore: I overheard some of their plans. There was a woman disagreeing that the King should get the amulet.
Forget-Me-Not: Oh, yes. Astrid. She has no idea what the amulet does, but she knows it's worth a fortune.
Forget-Me-Not: You should finish collecting what you want from these Knives and hide their bodies before others come looking for them.
Fennimore: Good idea.
Fennimore: Astrid? I don't think I've met her.
Forget-Me-Not: She's the wife of the owner of The Fiery Stag.
Forget-Me-Not: She's the youngest daughter of the Germanus family.
Fennimore: He's still breathing. Better to end his misery or will that just make it worse for me and the Knives?
Forget-Me-Not: I suppose you could patch them up and let them wander back in defeat...again.
Fennimore: Or just tie them up and leave them for the city guard to find?
Forget-Me-Not: Sure. That works too.
Fennimore: Think about your amulet and our friendship. You can find me at the Stag for the next few nights if you want to act on it.
Forget-Me-Not: I may pop in on you.
Forget-Me-Not giggles.
Fennimore quickly binds the hands of the two thugs behind them.
Fennimore: I'm looking forward to it.
Forget-Me-Not: Ta ta.
Fennimore: Be seeing you?
Fennimore feels the rush of air and low pop.
Fennimore: Oh great! She can teleport too.
Fennimore: What am I getting myself into?

Nonotina 10th, Year One of the Reign of High King Ran

Fennimore splits from the scene on Ballista Street.
Fennimore seeks out his old friend Dee.
Fennimore heads west through the city, skulking through back-alleys in search of Dee.
He passes the alley she was in the other day, but she doesn't appear to be there today.
He tries other places from previous meetings and eventually finds her casing a shop near The Bard's College.
Fennimore finds a quiet spot near her.
Fennimore: Hey.
Dee Strongbones starts.
Dee Strongbones: Crap!
Fennimore: Sorry, didn't mean to startle you.
Dee Strongbones: Oh, hi there Fenn. What's up?
Fennimore: Looking to talk. Do you have some time?
Dee Strongbones: Wait? What's all the blood from?
Fennimore: Maybe we should find someplace a little more discreet.
Dee Strongbones: Yea, I was done here. Where?
Fennimore: We're near the Spoon, we can have some privacy there.
Fennimore: Just watch out for a few big oafs I met there. They don't have their shit together.
Dee Strongbones: You like that place? I'm only going there for thief business, got it.
Fennimore: Got it. Strictly business, nothing funny.
Fennimore: And, yeah, I like it. It keeps me busy.
Dee Strongbones: OK. Still seems pretty busy there, but everyone is in there own private little world there, I guess.
Fennimore: You know a better place to hang low?
Dee Strongbones: Several, but you seem comfortable there, so it's fine with me.
Fennimore: Let's go then.
The pair head through the streets and alleys towards The Rogue Spoon.
Fennimore: Let's use the back door. It seems to attract a little less attention.
Dee Strongbones: Definitely.
As they approach the backdoor the inn, Fennimore notices one of the watchmen from the alley in the Castle Ward from a few days back standing in the alley south of the door.
Fennimore (whispering) Crap!
Fennimore: You're right this place is getting too busy.
Dee Strongbones (whispering) What's with him?
Dee Strongbones walks on towards the door.
The guard ignores her.
Fennimore follows her and keeps his head down.
Another watchman approaches from the north end of the alley and Fennimore recognizes his voice as Chet from the watch post.
Chet: Hoi, Hugh, have you seen von Rumm yet?
Hugh: No. He hasn't been around here, Chet.
Chet approches the watchman.
Chet: Supposedly, he has been staying at the estate all nice and safe.
Hugh: Figures. Your turn. I heard there was a skirmish over in Ballista Street and I probably ought to get over there.
Chet: Nothing much there. Some new bootlicker took over the scene, really interested in Forget-Me-Knot. He won't be lasting long.
Chet smirks.
Hugh shakes his head.
Chet takes Hugh's place in the alley and Hugh leaves the way Chet arrived.
Dee Strongbones enters The Rogue Spoon.
Fennimore is right behind her.
Fennimore looks about for Claricia.
The pair enter the inn unacknowledged by either Chet or Hugh.
Dee Strongbones: See, little people go unnoticed.
Fennimore: You're right there. It's a good thing. Those guys are looking for trouble.
Fennimore: I should warn Claricia, then we can talk. I've got a room in back for privacy.
Dee Strongbones: Trouble? Besides being watchman, how so?
The bartender, Felicia, smiles as you enter.
Felicia: Hi, Fenn.
Fennimore: You heard Chet mention von Rumm. He's some kinda patron of the joint. Watches out for Claricia's interests.
Fennimore: They want to get in his business.
Dee Strongbones: The guy who broke up the riot the other day? They're sure taking that personally, aren't they?
Felicia: When you get a chance, go talk to Claricia. She's in her room.
Fennimore: Seems a little too personally. But, I don't have all the details, yet.
Fennimore: Thanks, Felicia. I was looking for her too.
Fennimore: C'mon.
Dee Strongbones: I'm surprised this von Rumm guy hasn't got a medal for breaking that up already.
Fennimore walks down the hall and knocks on Claricia's door.
Claricia Robert: Come in.
Fennimore opens the door and steps in enough to let Dee in too.
Fennimore: Hey Claracia, you've got some trouble outback.
Claricia Robert: Hello, Fennimore...and Dee. Good to see you. We miss you around here.
Claricia Robert looks concerned at Fennimore.
Claricia Robert: Trouble?
Dee Strongbones smiles.
Fennimore: The guards I mentioned the other day, Chet and Hugh, are taking turns standing watch back there.
Fennimore: They are looking to get into Master von Rumm's business again.
Claricia Robert: Harold mentioned something about that. He's been keeping an eye on them.
Fennimore: Okay, didn't want you to be caught unawares and all.
Claricia Robert: That may be a problem for Munkustrap, though. He can't seem to get enough of this place.
Claricia Robert smirks.
Fennimore blushes.
Dee Strongbones rolls her eyes.
Claricia Robert turns to her desk and starts writing a note.
Fennimore: I need to clean up and talk with Dee a bit. Maybe I can get a message to him afterward. See if he can cool it for a bit.
Claricia Robert: Writing something up just now. Come back in a bit.
Fennimore: Will do.
Fennimore: C'mon Dee, my room is over here.
Claricia Robert: Oh, Fenn. Before you go, Master Octavius left this for you.
Claricia Robert hands Fennimore an envelope and a coin purse.
Fennimore: Thank you.
Claricia Robert: You're welcome.
Fennimore: Steps back into the hall and enters his room, holding the door for Dee.
Dee Strongbones enters the small room.
Fennimore: So, you heard the guards mention Ballista Street. You heard anything else about what happened there?
Dee Strongbones: Just that there was a delivery for the castle going through there. Some elf, Majestic or Magic or something, was setting up some heist with Alsis Chandor.
Dee Strongbones: It went south, didn't it.
Fennimore: In a way.
Fennimore: Forget-Me-Knot hit the delivery before we did.
Fennimore relays the whole tale to Dee.
Fennimore: The big folk are a bumbling bunch of fools.
Dee Strongbones: Not surprised. Do not get mixed up with Forget-Me-Not.
Fennimore: No? I was hoping you could give me some leads.
Fennimore: It's doubtful the one named Magic is going to let up on this.
Dee Strongbones: Even if I had some, I'd have to have a very good reason to talk about that one.
Dee Strongbones: They're a ghost, they are.
Fennimore: Yeah, they had to be to hit that caravan without them even knowing it.
Dee Strongbones: Exactly. Way out of our league.
Dee Strongbones: I do love the calling card, though. So pretty.
Fennimore: Yep, very stylish.
Fennimore: Hmmph.
Fennimore: Maybe I should make myself scarce around here for a bit.
Fennimore: The others seem to like it here.
Fennimore: If they are going to run into that kinda trouble, I don't want to be here when it happens.
Dee Strongbones: They do seem pretty blunt. They won't last long if they are involved in more fiascoes like that.
Fennimore: Haha.
Fennimore: Typical big folk.
Dee Strongbones points at the envelope.
Dee Strongbones: So, a reward from the king, huh.
Fennimore: Hmm, I wonder...
Fennimore looks at the envelope carefully.
Dee Strongbones: Royal stationery by the looks of it.
Fennimore: Rael Octavius seems to be another regular around here. He at least as a bit of discretion between his ears. Musta learned that at the castle.
Fennimore carefully breaks the seal on the envelope.
Dee Strongbones: Rael? He is the herald's son. He better. He was sitting at one of the tables when we came in.
Fennimore: Let's see what he has to say.
Fennimore: Pulls out the contents of the envelope and looks it over.
The letter, signed by Ran himself, states the debt of gratitude the realm has for Fennimore and possession of this document grants pardon of one high crime or misdemeanor.
Fennimore: Well, that's surprising.
Fennimore passes the letter to Dee.
Dee Strongbones: Wow! That is worth a fortune. Keep it safe.
Fennimore: Could come in handy, that's for sure.
Dee Strongbones: And a monetary reward?
Fennimore: Apparently...
Fennimore shakes out the coin purse.
100 gold coins spill out of the purse onto the bed.
Dee Strongbones: Not bad, Fenn. Not bad at all.
Fennimore: Wow, I think that's the most I've ever seen.
Fennimore: Didn't even have to lift it.
Dee Strongbones laughs.
Fennimore: So, what do you think I should do?
Fennimore: If I'm going to steer clear of Forget-Me-Not, that puts me out of work for a bit.
Dee Strongbones: Lay low, sure. But you are a halfling rogue. We are never out of commission.
Fennimore laughs
Fennimore: Not for long, anyway.
Dee Strongbones: The others will bumble around and cover your tracks.
Fennimore: True.
There is a knock at the door.
Fennimore: Well, keep an ear open. If you get any other business leads. I'm your halfling.
Fennimore: Come in.
The door opens and Claricia enters.
Claricia Robert: Here is Master von Rumm's warning if you would be so kind as to deliver it. I'm sure they will be generous.
Dee Strongbones: They always are.
Dee Strongbones smiles.
Fennimore: I'd be happy to.
Fennimore: But, I'm afraid I have some bad news.
Claricia Robert: Oh, what's this?
Fennimore: Your place is getting a little warm for me right now.
Fennimore: The new patrons seem to be stirring up trouble where they don't need to and I'm afraid it could reflect poorly on your establishment.
Claricia Robert: They are a bit rambunctious, but it covers up so many other things.
Fennimore: The one called Magic seems to be in the path of someone who calls themself Forget-Me-Not. When their paths cross, there will be blow-back.
Fennimore: I don't want to be around when that happens.
Claricia Robert: Point taken. That kind of confrontation here would be very bad indeed.
Fennimore hefts her letter.
Fennimore: I'll deliver your letter, then I'm moving on.
Fennimore: I may pop by once in a while to check in on you.
Fennimore: You've been very kind to this little halfling.
Claricia Robert: A shame, but consider yourself welcome here any time.
Fennimore: I appreciate it. You take care of yourself too.
Claricia Robert: Always.
Claricia Robert smiles.
Fennimore: If you need me, Dee will always know how to find me.
Dee Strongbones winks.
Fennimore: Now, I can't be wandering around town looking like this. If you ladies will excuse me. I need to change and pack.
Dee Strongbones: I need to be going anyway. See you around.
Fennimore: See ya.
Claricia Robert: Farewell, Fennimore.
Fennimore: Same to you.
Claricia Robert leaves and returns to her room.
Dee Strongbones stops at the bar on the way out for a drink and then departs.
Fennimore quickly changes out of his bloody clothes into clean ones.
Fennimore then packs the remainder of his few belongings into a bag.
Fennimore keeps King Ran's letter tucked and the coin purse close to him and Claricia's letter in a pocket.
Fennimore steps out into the bar, looks around, nods to Rael and walks to the front door.
Rael Octavius: Hey, Fennimore.
Fennimore: Hey.
Rael Octavius: Nice reward, yes?
Fennimore: Very. You knew?
Rael Octavius: I assume you got what I did.
Fennimore: A letter from the King himself?
Rael Octavius: Arncoril and Eris got the same.
Fennimore: Good for them.
Rael Octavius: You looked a bit worse for wear when you arrived. Everything alright?
Fennimore: Oh, it's been a tough day.
Fennimore: I think it's time for me to move from here. It's getting a little...crowded.
Rael Octavius: Really?
Fennimore: No offense, but big folk don't always watch out for us little folk.
Rael Octavius: Unfortunately, true.
Fennimore: I need to find a little space for myself.
Fennimore: If you see them, say bye to Eris and Arncoril for me.
Rael Octavius: Sure. If you ever need anything, leave word at The Fiery Stag. I'll get the message.
Fennimore: Will do that.
Rael Octavius: My father is always looking for folk to do jobs, as well. Check the board outside the Stag.
Fennimore: Sounds like a good idea!
Fennimore: Be seeing you.
Rael Octavius: Good day.
Fennimore steps out the front door into the morning sun, blinking in the light.
Fennimore smiles as if a weight has been lifted off his shoulders.
The market is in full business and quite crowded.
Fennimore walks a few stalls away, then pauses to look around.
Fennimore looks for a haberdashery.
Fennimore: Time for some nicer clothes.
There is a haberdashery two doors north of the inn.
Fennimore thinks to himself, "Well, looky there."
Fennimore enters the haberdashery.
Fennimore: Hello?
Tailor: Hello, Master Halfling. A fine day for some new clothes if I do say so myself.
Fennimore: Boy, you can say again.
Fennimore: What do you have that may fit a man of my stature?
The shop has all manner of fine clothing with a section catering to halflings.
Tailor: Oh, little folk are our specialty.
Fennimore: I'm looking for something for daily wear, doesn't need to be your best Go-To-Temple or meet with King Ran stuff.
Fennimore: But, nicer than these poor things.
Tailor: We definitely can outfit you. Something sturdy with good seams will stand up to travel and abuse.
Fennimore: Perfect.
Tailor: Right this way.
Fennimore follows the tailor
He leads Fennimore over to the section of the store with low mirrors and racks of clothes.
He selects a couple of different outfits after taking a close look at Fennimore's stature.
Tailor: I may need to let this dark one out a bit for you. This more colorful outfit was to be shipped to South Town, but the payment never came through.
Fennimore proudly pats his ample belly.
Fennimore: Tis understood.
Tailor: There is a booth right behind the curtain there. Try them on. I'll be right back.
Fennimore: I think I'll try the darker one first. I'm not really the flamboyant type.
Tailor: As you wish.
Fennimore tries on the darker outfit and it is quite snug.
Fennimore waddles out from behind the curtain and calls for the tailor.
Fennimore: You were right about letting this one out.
The tailor returns with measuring tape and a tray of tailoring tools.
Tailor: Quite right. Let's have off with it for now and I'll take some measurements and adjust it.
Fennimore strips down to be measured.
Fennimore: While you're at it, can you add a few extra pockets?
The tailor takes some measurements while taking some notes.
Fennimore: Some easy to reach, some a little more secure and hidden?
Tailor: More pockets? Inside and inconspicuous? Certainly.
Fennimore smiles.
Fennimore: How long might the tailoring take?
The tailor finishes up his measurements and hands a slip of paper to Fennimore.
Tailor: I should be able to have this done for you this time tomorrow. It will be 15 gold. You can pay me when you return.
Fennimore: That'll be fine. See you tomorrow.
Fennimore: By the way, do you know the von Rumm family? I have a delivery for them.
Tailor: von Rumm. Oh, yes. They are a good customer of mine. Their estate is straight northwest from that new statue of the king on the edge of the square.
Fennimore: Much appreciated
Fennimore: See you tomorrow.
Tailor: Much appreciated. See you then.
Fennimore dresses in his own clothes, making sure King Ran's letter is tucked safely away, and the coin purse is still there.
Fennimore: He leaves the haberdashery and heads north towards the statue and then across the plaza to the von Rumm estate.
About halfway between River Street and King's Square, Fennimore hears a voice whispering right behind him.
Forget-Me-Not: So, little one.
Then from his right front.
Forget-Me-Not: Or not so little one as the case may be.
Fennimore's hand jumps to the hilt of his rapier.
From his left behind.
Forget-Me-Not: Don't bother.
Fennimore: Who's there?
Forget-Me-Not: Just your friendly neighborhood thief.
Fennimore backs up to a wall.
Forget-Me-Not giggles.
Fennimore: Fair enough, there's plenty for everyone.
Forget-Me-Not: Relax, you seem stressed. I'm not here to hurt you.
Fennimore: Glad to hear that.
Forget-Me-Not: Your associates, however, may have gotten into a little hot water.
Fennimore: Doesn't surprise me.
Fennimore: They seem to have a knack for it.
Forget-Me-Not: At least the ones without nice letters from the king, anyway.
Forget-Me-Not: Oh, a couple of them don't have theirs yet. A shame.
Fennimore: Hmmph, not my problem anymore.
Forget-Me-Not: Probably for the best.
Fennimore: You have me at a disadvantage here. You seem to know everything about me and my former associates, but I don't know anything about you.
Fennimore: Care to share?
Forget-Me-Not: No. Not really. It's how I survive.
The voice is still flitting around, coming from different directions.
Fennimore: There are many friendly-neighborhood-thieves who would love for that degree of anonymity.
Fennimore: But, only one that I've crossed recently.
Fennimore: Have to say, if you are one and the same, I'm trying to uncross that bridge.
Forget-Me-Not: I am unique. This is true. But clearly I have pushed my luck a bit. I see you have sussed out my moniker.
Fennimore: So, what can this not-so-little street urchin do for you?
Forget-Me-Not: Firstly, tell no one of this little encounter. Lastly, be prepared to be foiled again...sometime.
Fennimore: Fair enough.
Fennimore hears something lightly drop to the ground behind him.
Fennimore looks down.
On the ground behind him is a sprig of forget-me-nots.
Fennimore: Is that it then?
Fennimore is answered only with silence.
Fennimore picks up the flowers.
Fennimore watches the crowd for a few moments and resumes his journey towards the von Rumm estate.
Without further interruption, Fennimore arrives at the gates of the von Rumm estate.
von Rumm guard: Good day, sir halfling. May I help you?
Fennimore: I have a special delivery for Master Munkustrap von Rumm. His hands only, if you please.
von Rumm guard: Master Munkustrap is not here at the moment. Lord von Rumm is aware of the arrival of this delivery, however.
Fennimore: Curious, word travels faster than these stout little halfling legs can carry it.
Fennimore: I'm afraid, I was given direction only to deliver to the younger von Rumm.
von Rumm guard: The lords of "The City" have many means of communication that do not involve legs. However, all correspondence must eventually be physical. I will see you in.
Fennimore: Thank you.
The guard opens the gate and escorts Fennimore into the mansion.
The guard and Fennimore arrive in the foyer of the vast mansion where a butler is waiting to escort the halfling the rest of the way to a parlor.
In the parlor sits an elder gentleman who was clearly once a powerful warrior, but age has caught up with him. He is stone-faced as Fennimore approaches.
Baron von Rumm: Greetings, master halfling. I understand you have a message for my eldest son.
Fennimore: Hello, Lord von Rumm. Yes, I have been entrusted with a message.
Fennimore: I'm surprised to learn you know of it.
Baron von Rumm: The nobles of this fine city have wizardly guidance that keeps us all apprised of the goings-on, especially of our own. It is part of having a king who is also a powerful mage.
Fennimore: For a city as large as this, I find that difficult to comprehend.
Baron von Rumm holds his hand out to receive the missive from Madame Robert.
Fennimore: My apologies m'Lord. The delivery was intended only for your son.
Baron von Rumm: I understand, but it is a matter for family secrets, which I must be aware of. Of course, your discretion is of utmost importance, as well. We can not have the family name stained by the appearance of impropriety. My son is actually committing no crime, but some will not see it this way.
Baron von Rumm beckons for the letter with his outstretched fingers.
Fennimore: I barely know your son. I do not know whether his actions are proper or not, legal or not. I do know there are some who are out to harm your son.
Fennimore: You may have my discretion, but surely you understand that extends to the delivery of my message to its recipient as well.
Baron von Rumm: You are quite the honorable one, I see. Very well, I will have the butler bring you to Munkustrap's room and you can slide it into his locked desk. He will retrieve it when he returns.
Fennimore: The message has some urgency to it. Do you know when he might return, or where I may find him?
Baron von Rumm: The harm that may come to my son, I should still be made aware of. I can ensure he is protected given I know the nature of the threat.
Fennimore: That I concur with. A few days ago, I happened to be walking past the Castle Ward watch post. I overheard two of the guards discussing your son and their displeasure with him. I thought little of it at the time. Courtly intrigue is far beyond my station. Since then, I have had the pleasure of meeting your son and just this morning I overheard the same two guards plotting against your son yet again.
Baron von Rumm: City watchmen? Is this regarding the incident in the North Market? These guards are upset that my son did their job? How amusing.
Fennimore: Take it how you will.
Fennimore: Now, if you don't mind, I'll accept the offer to deliver the message to Munkustrap's desk.
Baron von Rumm: As you wish. And, rest assured these watchmen's commander will be notified of their lack of candor. Take this as payment for your errand.
Baron von Rumm hands Fennimore a small silk pouch that jingles with coins.
Fennimore accepts the pouch from the Baron.
Fennimore looks around for the butler.
The butler escorts Fennimore through the mansion to a large bedroom on the second floor. He indicates the desk to the halfling.
Fennimore pats his pockets, searching for Claricia's note and verifying the King's letter is still tucked away. When he finds the note, he verifies it is in Claricia's hand and addressed to Munkustrap before sliding it into the slot above the desk drawer.
Fennimore pulls on the drawer handle to ensure it is locked and then turns to the butler.
Butler: Very good, sir. I will see you out.
Fennimore: Thank you, have you been with the family long?
Butler: Since the baron was a young lieutenant in the Deep Bend militia.
Fennimore: My, that is a long time. Well, take care of the boy. He seems like a good kid.
Butler: As good as a young knight can be. He is human after all.
Butler smiles.
Fennimore tries to naively ignore the butler's smile.
The butler passes Fennimore off to the guard at the door of the mansion and the guard escorts the halfling to the square.
Fennimore thinks, "well that could have gone better. At least I tried to warn the paladin."
