Undecitina 12th, Year One of the Reign of High King Ran

Over the next day, the group prepares to head out to the Gold Hills to retrieve a sword from a terrible, mysterious monster.
Rael and Fennimore are summoned to the training area as Perri is finishing up at the end of the day.
High King Ran: Very good work today, Lady Elastime. You are getting proficient a getting around my defenses.
Fennimore: Perri, did you land another blow today?
Perri Elastime grins.
High King Ran: Two today.
Rael Octavius: That is really good.
Fennimore: I'm impressed.
Perri Elastime: Thanks!
Fennimore bows to Perri.
High King Ran: I received word from The Temple of The Father and Mother that you are embarking on a quest for them.
Rael Octavius: We are, your Majesty.
Perri Elastime: With your permission.
High King Ran: What prompted your visit to the temple that would have them send you on a quest?
Rael Octavius remains silent.
Perri Elastime: A feeling of ratty disquiet.
High King Ran looks to Perri and Fennimore, quizzically.
Fennimore: We were cursed by bad dreams and an insatiable hunger for cheese.
High King Ran: Hmm.
Perri Elastime: I love cheese.
Perri Elastime: So we get to go?
Fennimore: Don't get me wrong. Cheese is wonderful, but even this halfling can recognize when he is eating too much.
High King Ran: Yes, of course.
Fennimore: Thank you, Your Highness.
Perri Elastime: Oh boy, a real test of your training, King Ran!
High King Ran: Yes. It will be.
Perri Elastime: Do you have any useful advice?
Rael Octavius: Your Majesty, perhaps you have some information about this quest?
High King Ran smiles.
Perri Elastime: Isn't that what I just said?
High King Ran: Keep your wits about you. The wilderness out in that direction is quite...wild.
Perri Elastime: Sorry, I have to do with my favorite nitwits.
Rael Octavius scowls.
Perri Elastime: Oh, Rael, I did say you were one of my favorites.
Fennimore nudges Rael.
Fennimore: I'd take that as a compliment.
Perri Elastime: As it was meant.
Rael Octavius: I will need to so as not to be offended.
Rael Octavius smirks.
High King Ran: You will make sure my pupil returns safely.
Perri Elastime: Come on. Aren't you excited to be leaving the city?
Fennimore bows to the King.
Rael Octavius: Absolutely, your Majesty.
Fennimore: I will protect her with my life.
Perri Elastime: As I will protect their lives.
High King Ran nods.
High King Ran: I will let you be on your way then. Be as safe as you can be out there.
Perri Elastime: I will return. I want to clout you again.
High King Ran smiles.
Perri Elastime: Maybe I shouldn't have said that out loud.
Fennimore smirks.
Perri Elastime: I think we should leave before I dig deeper.
Fennimore: Good idea.
Fennimore: With your leave, your Majesty.
High King Ran: Go on, off you go.
Perri Elastime: You have gotten really good at the courtly politeness.
Perri Elastime nudges Fenn.
High King Ran departs with his guards.
Fennimore (whispers): Whew.
Rael Octavius: I think he knows exactly what is going on.
Perri Elastime: But we can pretend he doesn't.
Fennimore: It's never good to piss off the king.
Rael Octavius: True.
Perri Elastime: He didn't look upset.
Fennimore: I'd like to keep it that way.
Rael Octavius: Him upset would be very frightening.
Perri Elastime: Guess that means we have to work on keeping our insides inside.
Fennimore: That suits me just fine.
Rael Octavius: We should get some rest and get an early start.
Perri Elastime: Do you think we need horses or something?
Rael Octavius: Would not be a bad idea.
Rael Octavius: Have any of you ridden before?
Fennimore: Horses? Maybe a pony? Or how about a wagon!
Perri Elastime: Not horses.
Fennimore: Nope.
Rael Octavius: A wagon would allow us to remain less long as we did not lose the wagon.
Perri Elastime: Think there is a road to where we are going?
Fennimore: Or at least get us closer?
Rael Octavius: There is.
Perri Elastime: Okay, wagon.
Rael Octavius: The mining village is where we need to head to first.
Perri Elastime: What do they mine.
Rael Octavius: They are called the Gold Hills for a reason.
Perri Elastime: Oh, gold.
Fennimore: Oh, I like the sound of that.
Rael Octavius: A lot of "The City's" wealth comes from those hills.
Fennimore: Maybe, we could mine a little of our own along the way.
Perri Elastime: Sounds like hard work.
Fennimore: I hear ore carts are a good place for prospecting.
Rael Octavius frowns at Fennimore.
Perri Elastime: Smelters are probably better.
Rael Octavius shakes his head.
Perri Elastime: He is so easy to tease.
Rael Octavius: Let us grab a quick bite at the Stag and then get some rest.
Fennimore: That's why you're the smart one.
Perri Elastime: Oh, I thought I was the pretty one.
Perri Elastime: On second thought, maybe I'm just the hungry one.
Fennimore: It's hard to be prettier than a handsome halfling.
Perri Elastime: So true.
Rael Octavius: Or a handsome courtier.
Perri Elastime: Yes, I'm surrounded by beauty.
Fennimore smiles.
Fennimore: Don't sulk, it doesn't become you.
The group has dinner and banters some more before returning to their quarters for some rest. The next day, they gather outside The Fiery Stag.
Fennimore: Rael, did you get the wagon?
Rael Octavius: I managed to procure a wagon and horses for our journey.
Fennimore (laughs): I guess you did.
Perri Elastime: Right, he's the pretty one.
Rael Octavius: Load up and we can get going.
Perri Elastime: Can I drive?
Rael Octavius: Can you?
Perri Elastime: There is a first time for everything.
Fennimore: Maybe Rael should take the reins until we are out of town, then you can take a turn.
Rael Octavius looks a little concerned.
Rael Octavius: I have only ever ridden in them and in carriages at that.
Perri Elastime: Sure, I can drive. How hard can it be?
Rael Octavius: We should probably lead it on foot until we get out of the city.
Fennimore: Well, I can give it a try, I guess.
Fennimore: It's bigger than Ma's flower cart, but I've driven that once or twice.
Rael Octavius: OK, but let's take in slow. We don't want to run anyone over.
Perri Elastime: Rael, this is an adventure. Be adventurous.
Rael Octavius: Let's not start out with a misadventure before we even get out of the city.
Fennimore climbs up the wheel into the driver's seat.
Perri Elastime: But the temples are nearby here.
Fennimore: All aboard!
Perri Elastime vaults into the wagon.
Rael Octavius climbs in back and stands behind Fennimore.
Fennimore: You might want to hold onto something.
Rael Octavius firmly grasps the rail.
Perri Elastime holds onto the seatback.
Fennimore grasps the reins, releases the brake, and nickers to the horses.
Fennimore: Giddyup.
Fennimore gently snaps the reins and holds his breath.
The wagon smoothly tracks onto the street.
Rael Octavius: Not bad, Fenn.
Fennimore slowly exhales.
Perri Elastime: Can we go faster than a tottering old man?
Fennimore steers the wagon slowly down the street.
Fennimore: Let me get a feel for her first.
Fennimore: Rael, do you know the way to the Mining town?
Perri Elastime: Okay, but if we don't have a catastrophe leaving the city it's on your head.
Rael Octavius: The Hills Way will take us directly there.
Fennimore drives the wagon through the city and takes The Hills Way northeast out of the city without incident. By the time they are surrounded by fields, Fennimore is feeling very comfortable.
Fennimore: Let's see what these horses can do.
Fennimore snaps the reins a little brisker.
Fennimore: Let's go, giddyup!
Perri Elastime: Wooohooo!
The horses pick up the pace and the wagon rumbles along the road towards The Gold Hills.
Perri Elastime watches the surroundings.
Fennimore: How far is it to the mining town?
Rael Octavius: It will take most of the day to get out there.
Fennimore: Well, we better keep rolling then.
The wagon winds its way through the countryside slowly heading east and uphill.
Fennimore: Perri, want to take a turn on the reins?
Perri Elastime: You bet!
Perri Elastime takes the reins from Fenn.
Perri Elastime: Come on little horses, let's find us a mining town.
Perri continues to drive for a while. The road is fairly flat, but they can see that it starts uphill not too far in the distance. This is when Rael notices something.
Rael Octavius: Um, I think we are going to have some company.
Perri Elastime looks around.
Fennimore looks around too.
The group can see a couple of bandits flanking the road just ahead not doing a very good job hiding.
Rael Octavius: There are more behind us.
Fennimore: Well, that was sneaky of them. I'll have to try that trick.
Fennimore: Do you think they want to talk? Must get lonely out here.
[TURN] Bandit 1
Perri Elastime: I don't think so.
Fennimore: Hello, it's the halfling party wagon. Are you looking to party?
Fennimore: Hey, that's not a fun party.
A crossbow bolt whizzes from the crossbow held by the bandit on the left side of the road and hits Perri hard.
Fennimore fires an arrow at the bandit and hits.
The bandit falls from his hiding spot in the bushes into the road.
Fennimore jumps down from the wagon and tries to hide between the horses.
The horses rear, causing the wagon to jolt to a stop.
Bandit Captain leaves his place in the bushes and tries to block the road.
Bandit Captain: Stand down and give us your goods!
Fennimore -> Perri Elastime: I'll give it to him good.
One of the bandits in the bushes behind the wagon fires at Rael.
The crossbow bolt sails over into the field beyond.
Perri leaps off the wagon casting a spell that blurs her and begins a bladesong.
The other bandit behind the wagon lowers his crossbow at Rael and fires.
This bolt strikes Rael.
Perri Elastime: Not much incentive to parley here.
Rael Octavius, not pleased, turns back to the bandit that just hit him and launches a bolt of fire at him.
The bolt of fire engulfs the bandit.
Rael Octavius leaps from the wagon and finds cover behind a boulder.
Another bandit appears from the bushes and fires at the blur that is Perri.
The bolt heading dead center careens off Perri's magical shield thrown up at the last moment.
The bandit from the right side of the road enters the road and tries to target Fennimore.
The bolt finds its mark between one of the horse's legs.
The arrow fired from Fennimore's bow hits the captain.
Bandit Captain moves forward and tries to elbow one of the horses in the head before slashing at Fennimore with his scimitar.
Fennimore: Hey, don't hurt the horses. They might be valuable to you if you survive this.
The scimitar cuts into Fennimore.
One of the bandits races over to the wagon looking for loot.
Perri Elastime casts sleep just in front and between the two bandits in front of the wagon
The bandit on the right falls unconscious to the ground.
The other bandit from behind the wagon leaps onto it and starts searching for loot.
Rael Octavius: Big mistake.
Rael Octavius steps forward hands spread in a fan before him. Fire surges from them.
Fennimore: Rael, don't go burning up our wagon.
Rael Octavius: Back away or dragon's fire will take you all!
The wave of fire engulfs the torsos and heads of the bandits on the wagon and they drop unconscious.
Fennimore: You should listen to the half-dragon, I've seen him do it.
The brazen bandits seem unimpressed and surge forward, one moving up to Perri to strike her with a scimitar.
The bandit misses.
Fennimore's rapier strike hits.
Fennimore: You really should be running along now. You've lost 4 henchmen already.
The bandit captain, not pleased, focuses on the halfling.
Fennimore: Ow! That hurt
Two scimitar slashes hit Fennimore but the dagger thrust misses.
Perri's launches magic missiles that strike the captain, but he remains standing.
Rael Octavius remains where he is and focuses his magic to cast his cure at a distance upon Fennimore.
Fennimore: Oooh, that feels better. Thanks, Rael!
The bandit confronting Perri tries to strike her again.
He misses again.
Fennimore unsuccessfully strikes at the captain then cunningly disengages between the horse and wagon to be next to Rael.
The bandit captain chases after the halfling.
Bandit Captain aims two scimitar strikes at Fennimore hitting once and a dagger thrust at Rael that misses.
Three more magical missiles strike the captain, launched by Perri.
Rael Octavius: Not going to learn to leave travelers alone the easy way? Take this!
Perri Elastime: Come on, Rael, knock him into next week.
Rael Octavius breaths a great gout of fiery breath.
Fennimore: Bandit flambe.
Rael Octavius then disengages around the wagon.
This bandit tries to hit Perri again but can't make out the blur.
Fennimore skewers the captain.
The bandit captain drops to the ground.
Perri Elastime: Finally.
Fennimore shouts to the last bandit closing on him.
Fennimore: Your boss is down; you're the last one standing. Surrender or die.
Perri lights her blade with green flames and stabs the final bandit who falls in a heap to the ground.
Fennimore: What should we do with the sleepy one?
Rael Octavius: Kill the criminal.
Perri Elastime: He hurt my family, he should die.
Rael Octavius: They are probably all wanted by the law anyway.
Fennimore: Fair enough. Think there's a bounty on him?
Rael Octavius: Likely.
Perri Elastime: Maybe!
Fennimore stabs the sleeping bandit in the heart and it expires.
Rael Octavius: I believe ears are bounty currency.
Fennimore collects his bow and scrounges for arrows.
Fennimore: That's rather gruesome.
Fennimore uses his dagger to saw off ears and searches the bodies.
Fennimore: Rael, can you search the crispy ones? They're a bit well done for me.
Rael Octavius: Sure.
Perri Elastime: Ick.
Rael Octavius drags the bodies off the back of the wagon.
Fennimore: I wonder if they have a den close by?
Perri Elastime: Do we need the bodies for bounties?
Rael Octavius: Just an ear from each.
Perri Elastime: How do they know who it is from?
Fennimore: They should trust the son of the King's Herald that we were beset by bandits. I bet everyone around here but us knows they harass travelers on the road.
Rael Octavius: We could probably turn them in at the mining village.
Fennimore: Good, otherwise those ears would get pretty rancid by the time we got them back to The City Watch.
Rael Octavius: We have a wagon. I suppose we could bring full proof.
Perri Elastime: Throw them on the wagon then.
Perri Elastime: I'll help!
Fennimore carries the treasure he's found to the wagon.
The three pile the bodies of the bandits into the wagon and continue on their way to the mining village. The rest of the journey is uneventful as any other threats avoid the death wagon as it rolls by.
The trio arrives at a camp that can hardly be considered a town, village, hamlet, or even thorp. The only possibly permanent structure is a log shack. The rest of the place a grouping of wagons and tents of various sizes arranged chaotically around this structure.
Rael Octavius: Not really a town is it.
Fennimore: Looks like a place for ne'er-do-wells.
Perri Elastime: Wow! This must be the Wilds.
Perri Elastime halts the horses short of the encampment.
Fennimore looks around, taking in the mining camp; watching for who is paying attention to their arrival or trying not to be seen.
The camp is fairly quiet and there does not seem to be much in the way of guards. Low talking can be heard coming from nearby tents along with the sounds you would associate with cooking.
Fennimore sniffs the air.
Rael Octavius: Shall we hail them or something?
Fennimore: They call that cooking? Smells more like they are trying to boil rocks.
Perri Elastime: Maybe that is all they have.
Rael Octavius: Stone soup?
Perri Elastime: Hello, camp!
There is a bit of stirring as voices fall silent.
Fennimore: Is there a sheriff among you? We found some bandits on the road.
A grizzled, old miner with a pickaxe resting on his shoulder approaches the group.
Foreman Togs: You have supplies?
Perri Elastime: Who are you? I'm Perri.
Foreman Togs: I am called Togs. I'm the foreman of this mining camp.
Fennimore: What kind of supplies do you need? We're just passing through and nobody told us we should bring supplies.
Rael Octavius: I did bring some supplies for the miners at the suggestion of the outfitter.
Fennimore -> Rael Octavius: I hope it included better food.
Foreman Togs: Oh, good. We are getting low on flour. We have a lot of fish but nothing to batter them with.
Fennimore: That might explain the smell.
Rael Octavius: Flour, oil, and some other staples. Also, a couple of new picks and shovels.
Perri Elastime: Fenn not everyone is a gourmet cook like yer Mam.
Rael Octavius smiles.
Fennimore: True that, Perri.
Fennimore: But, I wouldn't want her out here in the wilds either.
Foreman Togs: So you ran across some bandits?
Fennimore: Aye, do give bounty?
Fennimore: These boys'll be quite ripe if we have to haul them all the way back home.
Perri Elastime: We did. Nasty ones. They did not even want to talk with us.
Foreman Togs wanders down around the wagon to have a look at the bodies.
Foreman Togs: Oh, good. The Offal Gang. Looks like you got all of them too.
Perri Elastime watches the foreman.
Fennimore: The "Offal Gang", with a name like that, no wonder they turned to a life of crime.
Perri Elastime: Were they causing you trouble?
Foreman Togs: All we have in the way of bounty is ore. However, our best mine needs some clearing out since the monster moved in. You could probably just keep whatever you find after getting rid of it for us.
Perri Elastime: What sort of monster?
Foreman Togs: These cowards were a problem until the monster showed up.
Fennimore: Monster? We heard there was a fell beast up here.
Foreman Togs: I haven't seen it myself, just the results of it running amok.
Foreman Togs (pointing at the bandit captain's body): He saw it. Tore one of his gang limb from limb.
Perri Elastime: Like scorched walls, big claw marks, torn apart bodies?
Fennimore: Pity, he doesn't seem to want to talk about it.
Perri Elastime: Neither talking nor banditry was his strong suit.
Foreman Togs: So you say you are just passing through?
Fennimore: Well, the temple told us we needed to head up into the hills to fight your monster.
Foreman Togs: Ah, you must be after that sword.
Fennimore looks surprised.
Foreman Togs: That gang had it until the monster chased them off.
Foreman Togs: It collected all their ill-gotten booty and dragged into the cave from what I understand.
Perri Elastime: Where is the cave?
Rael Octavius: So these bandits had stolen the sword and then got it swiped by the monster.
Fennimore: Sounds cursed.
Foreman Togs: Yup. Just follow the lakeshore around. You can't miss it.
Foreman Togs: You're welcome to camp here and rest from your trip. We are just having supper.
Fennimore: Supper! Maybe with the fresh supplies, we can whip up something tastier for you and the miners.
Perri Elastime: That would be nice.
Foreman Togs: Any halfling would be a better cook than we have here. It'll be getting dark soon too. It's almost the second Borgosetin of the month.
Fennimore shivers.
Fennimore: C'mon, Rael. Let's unload their supplies.
Rael Octavius: Hopefully it will only be the one day.
Foreman Togs: We got some strong lads here. They can unload the wagon for you. We'll need to be burying those bodies too.
Perri Elastime: Could be cold without shelter.
Fennimore sniffs.
Fennimore: Yep, hasn't even been a full day and they are already getting ripe. Don't want them ruining your appetite.
Foreman Togs: There's plenty of wood around here for fires. It won't be too cold.
Fennimore: Rael, did your outfitter sell you a tent?
Rael Octavius: There are two in the wagon.
Perri Elastime: He's the responsible one.
Perri Elastime points a thumb at Rael.
Fennimore: Perri, will you help me cook while the bigguns unload the wagon?
Perri Elastime: Sure. I'll help.
Perri Elastime: I'm good at chopping and stirring.
Perri Elastime: Not to mention eating.
A couple of big fellows help out with the wagon at the direction of Togs and Rael. Before long, the trio has their own tents set up and dinner cooking for the rest of the camp.
Fennimore: How about a toast?
Perri Elastime: To new adventures?
Fennimore: To the "Offal Gang", may they bother you no more.
Fennimore: Yes, and to new adventures, too!
Foreman Togs: Good and buried.
Perri Elastime: Do you have prayers to say to keep them in the ground, Rael.
Fennimore: Good and buried, just where offal deserves to be.
Rael Octavius: Definitely. Already taken care of. They have a cemetery. I will make another visit and make sure it is safe for the future.
Perri Elastime: Good. Meeting offal once is bad enough. I don't want to meet them again.
The cooking goes fine and the camp has a celebration along with the dinner as the gang is gone and the monster is soon to be too.
Fennimore yawns.
Perri Elastime: I'm getting tired.
Fennimore: Fighting, cooking, and a long day's drive has made me a tired halfling. I think it's about time to turn in.
Fennimore: Two tents and three people, how do we divvy them up?
Rael Octavius: Each is big enough for two, so maybe Perri has her own?
Perri Elastime: Can we put them together so it is like one bigger tent?
Rael Octavius: I had the miners put them side by side. And, they are among the other tents. It should be safe.
Fennimore: If you don't want to sleep alone, I would be happy to share your tent.
Fennimore: Otherwise, I have to listen to Rael snore.
Rael Octavius frowns.
Fennimore: Of course, if m'lady prefers her privacy, I don't mind Rael's serenade.
Perri Elastime: You can share my tent, but if they are side by side, Rael snoring is still going to be heard.
Rael Octavius: If I snore.
Fennimore snickers.
Perri Elastime: By the way how do you know Rael snores.
Fennimore: How do you know he doesn't?
Rael Octavius: He doesn't and I don't.
Perri Elastime: I don't.
Fennimore: Well, I guess we shall all find out tonight.
Rael Octavius: That leaves the snoring to Fenn, then.
Perri Elastime: Maybe I snore louder than a banshee.
Fennimore: We had adjacent rooms in the castle. If you stored, Perri, I'm sure I would have heard.
By the time the trio is all settled in and the camp quiets down, the sun flees from the sky. The camp's fires are stoked and watched through the group's rest.

Undecitina 13th, Year One of the Reign of High King Ran

Nothing bothers the camp and everyone gets in a good rest.
Rael Octavius: Rise and shine because the sun won't today.
Perri Elastime: I didn't hear any snoring.
Fennimore: Maybe it's the fresh country air
Rael Octavius: None from us, anyway.
Perri Elastime: Oh, breakfast time.
Fennimore: Let's get those griddles frying. Time for some flapjacks.
Perri Elastime: I like mine with bits of apple.
Rael Octavius: So, do we want to hold off for the day and see if it's light tomorrow or push on before it gets too cold if the sun lags.
Fennimore: The cave is always dark. As long as we don't lose our way, I think we set out today.
Perri Elastime: I think so too.
Rael Octavius: It seems like a straightforward path: hill on one side and lake on the other.
Perri Elastime: Besides it is not too cold yet.
Fennimore: Right, and a good brisk walk will keep us warm.
Perri Elastime: If the sun lags we may have to hole up in the cave.
Fennimore: Or, do you think we can bring the wagon? I'd hate for our beastie to munch on our horse.
Rael Octavius: I have plenty of fire if we need it also.
Fennimore: Harry, yup, we need to name the horse Harry.
Perri Elastime: Then I'm calling the other one Silk.
Rael Octavius: Probably best if they stay in the camp.
Fennimore: No monster fodder for Harry and Silk.
Rael Octavius nods.
Perri Elastime: They sound like a team already.
Perri Elastime: Well, let's eat and start tromping.
Fennimore: Eat, good.
Fennimore: How far did Tog say we had to tromp?
Rael Octavius: We should probably pack one of the tents, though I'm not sure who will be able to carry it.
Rael Octavius: Two or three miles.
Fennimore looks to Perri and back to Rael.
Fennimore: You look to be the strongest of us, Rael.
Perri Elastime: Carrying the tent will make my tromp a painful slog.
Fennimore: Maybe we could hire one of the miners? They all look big and burly.
Perri Elastime: We could ask.
Rael Octavius: Not sure I would want to endanger any of them.
Perri Elastime: Maybe we take turns slogging so no one gets too tired.
Fennimore: Only have them carry it most of the way to the cave, then we slog it the last mile?
Perri Elastime: Maybe they have a handcart we could rent.
Perri Elastime: They must shift the ore somehow.
Perri Elastime turns to the miners.
Perri Elastime: Hey, any of you have a handcart? Could we use it?
Foreman Togs: A handcart?
Fennimore (to Rael): Maybe we rig a sling with the canvas wrapped around the tentpoles and we share the load.
Rael Octavius: I'll just carry it. It's not that much.
Fennimore: Let's pack up and mosey on down the trail.
Perri Elastime: Okay. How many pancakes did you eat Fenn?
The trio packs up and leaves the camp and follows the lakeshore around toward the north.
Fennimore: How many did you make?
Perri Elastime: About thirty.
Fennimore counts on his fingers.
Fennimore: At least 10, I hope the miners got some.
Fennimore leads the party along the shoreline.
The trio hikes along the lakeshore for several miles before coming to a large cave opening along the edge of the lake.
Perri Elastime: Hey, those rocks look like teeth.
Fennimore: You're right. That looks nasty.
Perri Elastime: Well nothing for it. Into the maw I guess.
Fennimore: Okay, keep up with the halfling's short legs.
The trio needs to walk through the shallows along a cliff-face to get to the cave opening.
Fennimore sneaks into the opening.
Perri Elastime follows suit.
The rocks are slick, but the three manage to enter the cave safely.
Perri Elastime sniffs the air.
There is a ledge to the left about five feet high and a pool to the right.
Fennimore and Rael notice a lot of quippers swimming in the pool to the right.
Fennimore -> Perri Elastime: Stay out of the pool. Those fishies look vicious.
Perri Elastime -> Fennimore: Okay.
Fennimore -> Rael Octavius: It's dark in here, can you light it up?
Rael Octavius conjures four moats of torchlight.
Fennimore (whispering): I found stairs, should we see what's up there?
Perri Elastime (whispering): Go for it.
Rael Octavius (whispering): These close ones or the farther ones?
This area of the ledge appears to be places the miners were digging.
Fennimore (whispering): Not much up here.
Fennimore (whispering): Let's go back.
Perri Elastime (whispering): Let's go back down.
Fennimore (whispering): Do you see that?
Fennimore: Go, Perri. Blow it out of the water!
Perri and Fenn see a tentacled humanoid emerge from the pool.
Perri's fire bolt strikes the creature before drawing her blade and having it begin to sing. She moves up to another one of the creatures.
Rael Octavius moves up into this larger cave and launches his own fire bolt at the nearest creature.
Fennimore hits with the arrow fired from his bow.
Perri Elastime: Nice one.
Another of these creatures moves forward tentacles flailing as it approaches.
[TURN] Sea Spawn 2
The first creature exits the pools and attacks Perri.
The creature tries to bludgeon Perri with arms and tentacles, but all miss after a magical shield is raised.
[TURN] Sea Spawn 3
The creature that Perri closed on also focuses its attacks on her.
All miss as well.
Perri's blade ignites in green flame. She strikes the first creature causing flames to leap over to the other.
The first creature collapses to the floor of the cave as Perri moves into the corner next to the other creature.
Fennimore: Perri, why don't they seem to like you?
Perri Elastime: All monsters want a taste of me.
Rael Octavius moves forward and launches another bolt of fire at the approaching sea spawn.
Perri Elastime: I must have an attractive bouquet.
Fennimore drops his bow and draws his rapier as he sneaks behind the piscine person he has flanked with Perri.
Fennimore's rapier pierces the creature.
The approaching creature reaches its tentacles out to grab Fennimore.
They fail to grab the halfling.
It then closes and tries bludgeoning the halfling with its arms.
Fennimore: Well, aren't we all lined up in a tidy little row.
It manages one hit on Fennimore.
The flanked creature flurries blows at Perri but misses with them all.
Perri thrusts her rapier into the fish person.
Rael Octavius moves around and firebolts again.
Rael's bolt misses the mark this time.
Fennimore slays another sea spawn.
The remaining creature attacks Fennimore.
Again, it only connects once with a fist.
Perri moves around to flank the final sea spawn and stabs the creature.
Rael Octavius launches another fire bolt hoping to end the fight.
The last creature drops unconscious.
Perri Elastime: You're bleeding.
Fennimore: 'Tis but a scratch
Fennimore: A little rest and a bandage and I'll be right as rain.
Rael Octavius: We're due a quick rest.
Perri Elastime: Sounds good to me.
Perri Elastime: I don't think those beasties were the monster.
While taking a break you notice a number of coins scattered throughout the cave.
Fennimore: Ugly enough, but not exactly what I would call a fell beast.
Fennimore: Hey, look, shiny.
Perri Elastime: Didn't seem like they could rend a person.
Rael Octavius: No. They seem like recent occupants as well.
Fennimore: But, our beastie lets them share its cave.
Perri Elastime: Shall we explore a bit more.
Wandering around during the short rest reveals the rest of the cave and a tunnel leading north. Rael Octavius: Are we all rested up?
Perri Elastime: I think so.
Fennimore: All better.
Rael Octavius (pointing): I believe we want to follow that tunnel.
Perri Elastime: Okay, let's go.
Fennimore: I'll go first, but stay close.
Perri Elastime: I'll follow you, quietly.
Fennimore starts to sneak down the tunnel.
Perri Elastime follows, treading lightly.
Rael Octavius follows quietly.
Fennimore: Ouch! These cave floors are rough.
The trio begins to follow the tunnel, trying to remain quiet. The tunnel floors are damp and gravelly, making it difficult.
Rael Octavius: I'll try to keep a couple of lights in front and the others just behind.
The tunnel twists and turns for a while, the lights revealing the bloody remains of humanoids and animals alike.
Rael Octavius (whispering): I hope we find something soon.
Fennimore (whispering): Looks like the cavern is widening out again.
Perri Elastime: Maybe a dragon lives here.
Fennimore (whispering): Dragon? Hush, I don't want to meet any dragons.
Perri Elastime (whispering): I do.
Fennimore (whispering): You coming, Rael?
Rael Octavius (whispering): Right behind you.
Perri Elastime: Stops and listens.
As the tunnel widens into a cave, the group begins to hear deep, heavy breathing echoing throughout the area.
Perri Elastime draws her rapier.
Rael Octavius (whispering): Something big is in here.
Fennimore (whispering): Almost everything is bigger than me.
Perri Elastime (whispering): I think so too.
The tunnel at this point has dried up and the gravel is gone.
Fennimore (whispering): No more stubbing my furry toes on gravel.
The breathing gets louder.
Fennimore (whispering): Oh, I think we have a big cavern ahead.
Perri Elastime sniffs the air.
A creature: Grrrrrrr!
A creature [Giant]: What is that?
Perri Elastime (whispering): Did you understand that?
Rael Octavius (whispering): No.
Fennimore (whispering): Grrr is usually something bad.
Perri Elastime (whispering): I heard something say something.
The trio hears movement from where the speaking came from.
Fennimore readies his bow.
Fennimore -> Perri Elastime: Get out of the line of fire.
Perri Elastime (whispering): Through here I think.
Rael Octavius: Troll!
Rael Octavius gets to where he has a clear shot and breathes fire at it.
Perri Elastime: Rael, what did you have for lunch?
Rael Octavius slides back out of the way.
Perri begins a bladesong and rushes in to thrust as the troll, but the rapier doesn't pierce its hide. She then darts away from the surprised giant.
Fennimore creeps forward to where he can get a clear shot with his bow.
Fennimore hits the troll with the arrow.
Perri Elastime: That's got to hurt.
Fennimore creeps back into the shadows and hides.
Troll [Giant]: Roooaaaaarrrr!!!!
Perri Elastime (questioning): Is it weird that it didn't chase us?
Rael Octavius slides back up again, breathes fire, and launches a spread of flame at it.
Rael Octavius slides back out of the way.
Perri Elastime charges back in and tries to hit the troll again.
Perri's rapier draws blood this time.
Perri Elastime tumbles back out of the way.
Rael Octavius: Stay together to confuse it!
Fennimore steps up again to take another sneaky shot with his bow and the arrow hits it right between the eyes.
Fennimore: That's gonna leave a mark.
Perri Elastime: Nice shot, Fenn.
Rael Octavius: Like fire, Fenn.
Fennimore hides behind the corner again.
Troll [Giant]: Roooaaaaarrrr!!!!
The troll charges from its small cave.
Another arrow strikes the troll fired from Fennimore's bow as it passes, unaware that the halfling is there.
The troll crashes to the ground between the adventurers.
Fennimore: Quick, Rael, roast it. Make sure it doesn't come back.
Rael Octavius: Wow! I'm glad we got the jump on it. It was coming right at us.
Rael Octavius fire bolts the troll several times.
Fennimore breathes a sigh of relief.
The creature ignites and smoke billows throughout the cave.
Fennimore: Time to search for treasure!
Fennimore: You think this was the big, bad beastie the miners were worried about?
Fennimore: Cough, cough, hack, hack.
Fennimore: That thing reeks.
Perri Elastime: Retch, gag.
Rael Octavius (between coughs):
Fennimore: Quickly.
Perri Elastime: Rael, are you okay?
The smoke fills the cave and heads down the tunnel the way the group came. It seems to be pushed away from the opening to the east where rushing water can be heard.
Rael Octavius: I think we need to go this way.
Fennimore grabs Perri as she goes by in the dark.
Fennimore: Follow Rael.
Perri Elastime: We need to search the troll's cave when the smoke dissipates.
Fennimore: Yes, but we need fresh air now.
Perri Elastime: What, I already threw up breakfast.
Fennimore: Wow.
The ground gets very slick as they approach the water that is swirling before them.
Perri Elastime: Watch it! It is slippery.
Fennimore falls prone and begins to slide into the water.
Fennimore: Help!
Perri Elastime falls flat to grab Fennimore.
Rael Octavius falls to try and grab Fennimore.
Rael misses grabbing Fennimore but keeps himself from sliding in.
Perri dives and grabs Fennimore and all three lie on the ground at the edge of the water.
Rael Octavius: OK. Now what?
Fennimore: Great! Here we lie like three slugs in the slime. At least it isn't so smoky over here.
Rael Octavius: Always looking on the bright side.
Perri Elastime: I have a rope. You see anything to lasso.
Fennimore looks around.
Fennimore: Don't let go of me.
Rael Octavius: Let me move a light over there.
Rael Octavius: Maybe just crawl over there?
Fennimore: You first.
Perri Elastime hangs on to Fennimore and tries to back up.
Rael Octavius: It's shallow over here and it looks dry further on.
Fennimore tries to wiggle away from the edge of the water.
Perri Elastime: Get to the dry and toss us a rope. You have one, right?
Rael Octavius crawls through the shallowest water.
The water being driven out of the whirlpool pushes Rael, but he manages to surf over to the rise and grab on.
Rael Octavius tries to climb out.
Perri Elastime crawls back further still holding Fennimore.
Rael Octavius: OK. I made it.
Fennimore: That's a long way to throw a rope. If we can back up far enough, maybe we can tie Perri's to an arrow and shoot it at you.
Perri Elastime: Near you.
Rael Octavius: Next to me?
Fennimore: It's not like I'd try to hit him. Just over his shoulder or something.
Fennimore: Put an apple on your head.
Perri Elastime: Let's get to dry ground first.
Rael Octavius: Maybe crawl to where the water starts to get deep. I'll throw you my rope.
Perri Elastime: We are quite a bit smaller. The water might pull us in.
Rael Octavius pulls his own rope out of his pack and ties one end around his waist.
Rael Octavius: This might work better if we let ourselves recover from the smoke.
Fennimore: I'm fine with that. We'll just sit here in the slime and rest for a minute.
Perri Elastime: I'm moving out of the slime.
Fennimore wriggles back another few feet.
Perri Elastime: It is making my skin crawl.
Perri Elastime stands up.
Perri Elastime: I'm feeling better how about you?
Rael Octavius tries throwing his rope as far as he can toward Fennimore and Perri.
Fennimore: Give me a hand up.
Perri Elastime helps Fennimore up.
Fennimore coughs to try to clear his lungs of the troll smoke.
The first toss gets about halfway.
Rael Octavius reels in the rope and tries again.
The rope and about ten feet of the coil at the end make it to within ten feet of Fennimore.
Rael Octavius: Grab the rope before the stream pulls it away.
Fennimore: Leave it there, I'll try to crawl to it.
Fennimore: Perri, tie me off with your rope and stay here on high ground.
Perri Elastime: Here hold on to my rope I'll stay on the dry.
Fennimore has no trouble crawling out to grab Rael's rope.
Perri Elastime ties Fennimore to her rope.
Fennimore: After Perri ties him off, and crawling to Rael's rope, Fenn ties himself off to Rael's rope.
Perri Elastime ties her rope around her waist.
Fennimore: Rael, reel me in. Perri, give me a little slack.
Fennimore starts inching his way towards Rael.
Perri Elastime starts to feed out the rope.
Rael Octavius: OK, Fenn, slide over here. Aim north and let the water take you to where I'm standing.
Rael Octavius reels in the rope as Fennimore gets closer.
Fennimore climbs up the far bank of the stream.
Rael Octavius: Dry here. We'll be more prepared coming back.
Fennimore: Perri, your turn.
Fennimore: Rael and I will pull you in.
Rael Octavius: Just like Fenn did it.
Perri Elastime holds on to her rope and tries to ski across.
Perri slides on her feet all the way to Fennimore.
Perri Elastime looks to see if the slime is present all around the pool.
It is slippery around the edge of the pool all the way around. It just seems to slosh further on the west side where Fennimore almost slid in.
Perri Elastime: We should skirt the edge and see what is north.
Perri Elastime tiptoes around the edge of the cavern.
Fennimore follows Perri.
Fennimore (whispering): Rael, keep up. There's more to explore over here.
Perri Elastime looks for a rapier.
Rael Octavius: Right with you.
Rael Octavius: Looks pretty clear to the north.
Fennimore (whispering): Find anything, Perri?
There is nothing to see to the north, though there is a wide tunnel to the south.
Perri Elastime: I didn't find anything.
Fennimore: If there's nothing up there, then let's go this way.
Perri Elastime (whisper): Okay, coming.
Fennimore peeks around the corner after sneaking down the tunnel.
Fennimore: Eek!
Fennimore: Kill it! Kill it with fire!
A giant spider drops down on top of Fennimore.
Perri Elastime: Don't let him get you!
It misses with its surprise attack and snaps again, still missing.
Rael Octavius launches a fire bolt at the spider.
The bolt misses the spider.
Fennimore: Eegh, spider guts.
Perri's bolt does enough damage for both her and Rael.
Perri Elastime draws her rapier and begins a new bladesong.
Fennimore stands his ground and tries to skewer the spider with his rapier.
Fennimore skewers the spider.
There is a clang of metal from the passageway to the west.
Fennimore: Uh oh, I don't like the sound of that.
The giant spider launches webs at Fennimore from its spinnerets and pins the halfling to the wall behind him.
Rael Octavius launches another fire bolt at the spider.
This time the bolt hits the spider.
Perri's closes and attacks, but her rapier thrust goes astray.
Fennimore struggles to stab his way out of the webs.
Perri Elastime: Eek!
A second spider arrives and attacks Fennimore.
Perri Elastime: You hairy-legged flycatcher get away from him!
Fennimore: Ow, that hurt.
The first spider turns its attention to Perri, firing webs at her.
Perri's shield deflects the sticky strands of web.
Rael Octavius this time launches a guiding bolt at the nearest spider.
This bolt misses.
Perri Elastime launches magic missiles at the spider.
The missiles strike the spider down.
Fennimore continues to struggle against his restraints.
Fennimore cuts himself loose of the webs.
The second spider realizes the halfling has escaped and fires webs at him again.
These webs hit the wall beside Fennimore.
Rael Octavius returns to fire bolting spiders.
However, another miss.
Rael Octavius moves up to Fennimore to heal him.
Perri Elastime moves past Fennimore and around the spider hanging from the wall.
Perri solidly stabs the spider with her rapier.
The strike is so well placed that it appears to have stunned it.
Fennimore stabs the stunned arachnid.
It falls to the floor, its legs curling around it.
Fennimore: That'll teach you how a stinger feels.
Perri Elastime looks around for more spiders, especially checking the ceiling.
Rael Octavius touches Fennimore with healing energy.
Fennimore: Oh, that's a little better.
Fennimore: Maybe we can take a rest here.
Fennimore: Those things pack a nasty bite.
Rael Octavius: Hopefully that is all the creepy crawlies left.
Fennimore looks around.
Rael Octavius (pointing): There is what we are here for.
Perri Elastime: I thought we were here for the fresh air.
Rael Octavius picks up a rapier off the top of a pile of treasure.
Fennimore: And a prize for the temple.
After a brief rest, the trio makes its way back out of the caves, now familiar with the hazards they need to pass. They exit the cave into darkness, but now unhampered by the lingering smell of burning troll. An hour or so later, they arrive back in the miners' camp with their treasure and a story for the miners. The darkdays continue for several more days during which the trio remains in the camp before returning to "The City."
